A relief pitcher or reliever is a baseball or softball pitcher who enters the game after the starting pitcher is removed due to injury, ineffectiveness, fatigue, ejection, or for other strategic reasons, such as being substituted by a pinch hitter. Relief pitchers are further divided informally into closers, set-up relief pitchers, middle relief pitchers, left-handed specialists, and long relievers.

In the early days of Major League Baseball (MLB), substituting a player was not allowed except for sickness or injury. An ineffective pitcher would switch positions with another player on the field. The first relief appearance in the major leagues was in 1876 with Boston Red Caps outfielder Jack Manning switching positions with pitcher Joe Borden.^[1] In 1889, the first bullpen appearance occurred after rules were changed to allow a player substitution at any time.^[2] Early relief pitchers were normally starting pitchers pitching one or two innings in between starts.^[3] Firpo Marberry is credited with being the first prominent reliever. From 1923 to 1935, he pitched in 551 games, 364 as a reliever. Baseball historian Bill James said Marberry was "a modern reliever—a hard throwing young kid who worked strictly in relief, worked often, and was used to nail down victories."^[4] Another reliever, Johnny Murphy, became known as "Fireman" for his ability to put out fires in relief.^[5] Gradually after World War II, full-time relievers became more acceptable and standard.^[6] The relievers were usually pitchers that were not good enough to be starters.^[7] Relievers in the 1950s started to develop oddball pitches to distinguish them from starters.^[7] For example, Hoyt Wilhelm threw a knuckleball, and Elroy Face threw a forkball.^[8]

In 1969, the pitcher's mound was lowered and umpires were encouraged to call fewer strikes to give batters an advantage. Relief specialists were used to counter the increase in offense. Relievers became more respected in the 1970's, and their pay increased due to free agency. All teams began having a closer.^[9] The 1980's were the first time in MLB that the number of saves outnumbered complete games. There was nearly four saves for every complete game in 1995.^[10] It is unclear if the specialization and reliance on relief pitchers led to pitch counts and fewer complete games, or did pitch counts lead to greater use of relievers.^[11] As closers were reduced to one-inning specialists, setup men and middle relievers became more prominent.^[12] This change in mindset can be seen by watching any major game, as well as seeing the salaries of such pitchers. In past decades, the relief pitcher was merely an ex-starter who came into a game upon the injury, ineffectiveness, or fatigue of the starting pitcher. The bullpen was for old starters who had lost the ability to throw effectively. Many of these pitchers would be able to flourish in this diminished role. Those such as Dennis Eckersley, as with many others, actually prolonged their tapering careers and often sparked them to new life. The added rest to their arms as well as the lessened exposure of their abilities became an advantage many would learn to capitalize on. Because these pitchers only faced some batters once a season, the opposing side would have greater difficulty preparing to face relief pitchers.

Recently, being a relief pitcher has become more of a career, rather than a reduced position. Many of today's top prospects are considered mainly for their relief pitching skills.^[13] The game today often calls for those in the bullpen to step up and become occasional starters. Their limited face-time against each batter can give these pitchers a competitive edge. In addition, the ability to call upon relief pitchers to start when necessary helps regular starting pitchers to have longer, healthier careers. For example, the lengthy careers of such pitchers as Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling were likely extended by the assistance of relief pitchers. Furthermore, many players who started as relief pitchers have gone on to prosper as starting pitchers. One example of this is Pedro Martínez.

Another reason for the advancement of the skill in relief positions is due to growing interest in gaining a psychological edge. In late innings such as the 7th, 8th, and 9th, many managers are known for changing pitchers often. For example, Tony La Russa and Tom Lasorda are particularly known for using this strategy. Thus, this gives a competitive edge against a batter who can't hit well off the movement of a left-hander's curveball, and they may often face a left-hander in a late inning situation.

As of October 2010, five pitchers are currently in the Baseball Hall of Fame chiefly for their accomplishments as relief pitchers: Goose Gossage, Hoyt Wilhelm, Rollie Fingers, Bruce Sutter, and Dennis Eckersley (although Eckersley and Wilhelm also had significant careers as starting pitchers.) Jim Konstanty in 1950 was the first reliever to win the MLB Most Valuable Player Award after a then-record 74 games, 16–7 record, 22 saves, and a 2.66 ERA.^[14] Mike Marshall in 1974 was the first reliever to win the Cy Young Award after a record 106 games, 15–12 record, 21 saves, and 208 innings pitched.^[15]

Roles[link]

Pitching staffs on MLB teams have grown from 9 or 10 to as many as 12 or 13 due to the increased importance of relief pitching.^[16] It consists of five starting pitchers, with the fifth sometimes a spot starter that also relieves.^[17] A team's relief staff usually consists of a closer who usually pitches the ninth inning, a setup pitcher who pitches the eighth, a middle reliever who can pitch the seventh or eighth, a left-handed specialist who pitches to left-handed batters, another middle reliever who can pitch the sixth, and a long reliever who can come in if the starter leaves the game early. There may be an additional one or two pitchers on the staff that fill multiple roles. ^[18]

The closer is usually the best relief pitcher, followed by the setup man.^[19] Players typically get promoted into later-inning roles as they succeed.^[20][21] Relievers were previously more multipurpose before becoming one-inning specialists.^[21][22]

Francisco Javier Cordero (born May 11, 1975 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays. Cordero is frequently referred to by his nickname, CoCo, which is a combination of the last two letters of his first name and the first two letters of his last name.^{[citation needed]}

Cordero throws a hard fastball—capable of reaching the upper 90s, and also has an excellent slider that he can throw for strikes early in the count, and which he uses as his out pitch. On June 1, 2011, Cordero recorded his 300th career save with the Cincinnati Reds, becoming only the 22nd player to reach that mark and ranks 2nd all time on that list among active players.

He attended Colegio Luz Arroyo Hondo High School in the Dominican Republic.

Detroit Tigers[link]

Cordero made his first appearance in the Tigers organization with the Jamestown Jammers of the New York-Penn League in 1995, appearing in 19 games, making 18 starts, and going 4–10 with a 5.42 ERA in 108 innings pitched. Cordero then finished the 1995 season with the Fayetteville Generals of South Atlantic League, going 0–3 with a 6.30 ERA in four starts.

Cordero suffered through an injury plagued 1996 season, as he made only two starts with the Jammers, going 0–0 with a 0.82 ERA in 11 innings pitched, then with the Generals, he appeared in two games, making one start, going 0–0 with a 2.57 ERA in seven innings pitched.

He played the entire 1997 season with the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Midwest League, where Cordero was converted into a closing pitcher. In 50 games, Cordero had an excellent season, going 6–1 with a 0.99 ERA in 54.1 innings pitched, earning 35 saves.

Cordero began the 1998 season with the Lakeland Tigers of the Florida State League, appearing in just one game, allowing a hit to the only batter he faced before moving up to the Jacksonville Suns of the Southern League. In Jacksonville, Cordero appeared in 17 games, going 1–1 with a 4.86 ERA while earning eight saves.

He returned to Jacksonville for the 1999 season, as Cordero appeared in 47 games, going 4–1 with a 1.38 ERA while earning 27 saves with the Suns before earning a call-up to the Detroit Tigers.

Cordero made his MLB debut on August 2, 1999, pitching the ninth inning against the Chicago White Sox at Tiger Stadium. The first batter he faced was Chris Singleton, who grounded out. After Frank Thomas hit a single, Cordero managed to strikeout both Magglio Ordonez and Brian Simmons to end the inning. The White Sox ended up winning the game 6–2. Cordero earned his first MLB victory on August 31, 1999 in a 14–6 win over the Texas Rangers. He finished the season with a 2–2 record and a 3.32 ERA in 20 games out of the bullpen. On September 27, 1999, Cordero transported the home plate of the old Tiger Stadium after the last game played there to Comerica Park along with pitchers Matt Anderson and Jeff Weaver.

On November 2, 1999, the Tigers traded Cordero, Frank Catalanotto, Bill Haselman, Gabe Kapler, Justin Thompson and Alan Webb to the Texas Rangers for Juan González, Danny Patterson and Gregg Zaun.

Texas Rangers[link]

Cordero made his debut with the Texas Rangers on April 4, 2000, as he pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two runs, however, earned the victory as Texas defeated the Chicago White Sox 12–8 at The Ballpark in Arlington. He finished the season going 1–2 with a 5.35 ERA, pitching 77.1 innings with the Rangers.

Injuries slowed Cordero down in the 2001 season, as he appeared in only three games with Texas, going 0–0 with a 3.86 ERA. With the Oklahoma RedHawks of the Pacific Coast League, Cordero appeared in 12 games, going 0–0 with a 0.59 ERA and earning six saves in 15.1 innings pitched, striking out 20 hitters.

Cordero spent part of the 2002 season with Oklahoma, playing in 11 games, going 0–2 with a 5.84 ERA, while earning two saves. In Texas, Cordero earned his first career MLB save on June 19, 2002, striking out all three batters he faced in the tenth inning in a 7–4 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. He had a very solid season with the Rangers, going 2–0 with a 1.79 ERA, while earning 10 saves.

Cordero began the 2003 season as the set-up man for closer Ugueth Urbina, however, the Rangers traded Urbina to the Florida Marlins in July. In August, Cordero was named the Rangers closer, as he earned 12 saves during the last two months of the season. Overall, Cordero was 5–8 with a 2.94 ERA and 15 saves in 73 games pitched.

In 2004, Cordero was the Rangers closer for the entire season for the first time in his career, and he had an all-star season, going 3–4 with a 2.13 ERA and earning 49 saves, second only to Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees in the American League, who had 53 saves. Cordero was named to the 2004 MLB All-Star Game at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, but did not appear in the game.

Cordero had another very solid season in 2005, going 3–1 with a 3.39 ERA and 37 saves for the Rangers in 69 games pitched.

He began the 2006 season as the Rangers closer, however, Cordero struggled early in the season, as at the end of April, despite a 3–2 record, Cordero had an ERA of 11.45. He lost his job as the closer to Akinori Otsuka, and on July 28, 2006, Texas traded Cordero, Kevin Mench, Laynce Nix and Julian Cordero to the Milwaukee Brewers for Nelson Cruz and Carlos Lee. Cordero had a 7–4 record with a 4.86 ERA and six saves at the time of the trade.

Cordero made his Brewers debut on July 28, 2006, pitching the ninth inning in a 4–3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park. Cordero took over the Brewers closers job from Derrick Turnbow, and earned his first save as a Brewer on July 30, 2006 in a 4–3 victory over Cincinnati. Cordero finished the season off strongly, going 3–1 with a 1.69 ERA in 28 games, earning 16 saves.

Cordero had a very successful 2007 season, as he was named the winner of "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" for April, 2007. He was successful on his first 22 save attempts until June 9, 2007, Cordero blew his first save of the season against the Texas Rangers. Cordero played in the 2007 MLB All-Star Game at AT&T Park in San Francisco, where he allowed a home run to Carl Crawford of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in his only inning of work. Cordero finished the season with a 0–4 record with a 2.98 ERA in 66 games, earning 44 saves, second in the National League to Jose Valverde of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who recorded 47 saves.

At the end of the season, Cordero became a free agent, and on November 28, 2007, Cordero signed a four year, $46 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds, the largest contract ever given to a relief pitcher at the time.

Cincinnati Reds[link]

Cordero made his Reds debut on March 31, 2008, pitching an inning in a 4–2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Great American Ballpark. Cordero earned his first save as a Red on April 3, 2008, pitching a scoreless ninth inning in a 3–2 win over Arizona. On April 5, 2008, Cordero earned his first victory with Cincinnati, getting the decision in a 4–3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. He finished the 2008 season with a 5–4 record and a 3.33 ERA in 72 games pitched, earning 34 saves.

Cordero had another very solid season in 2009, going 2–6 with a 2.16 ERA in 69 games pitched with the Reds, registering 39 saves, and earned a spot at the 2009 MLB All-Star Game held at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri, where Cordero pitched a scoreless inning.

In 2010, Cordero played a key role as the Reds made the playoffs for the first time in 15 years, and it was the first time Cordero made the playoffs in his career. He had a 6–5 record with a 3.84 ERA in 75 games pitched, earning 40 saves. Cordero did not see any playing time in the post-season, as Cincinnati was swept by the Philadelphia Phillies in three games in the first round.

Cordero put together another very solid season in 2011, going 5–3 with a 2.45 ERA in 68 games with Cincinnati, while earning 37 saves. On June 1, 2011, Cordero earned the 300th save of his career in a 4–3 win over his former team, the Milwaukee Brewers.

Toronto Blue Jays[link]

On February 1, 2012, Cordero signed a 1 year, $4.5 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. Cordero is expected to begin the 2012 season as the Blue Jays set-up man to the newly acquired reliever Sergio Santos. Cordero was named the closer after a shoulder injury forced Santos onto the disabled list.^[1] Cordero was later moved back to the set up man (replaced by Casey Janssen) after poor performance in the closer role.

Michael John "Mike" Myers (born May 25, 1963) is a Canadian actor, comedian, screenwriter, and film producer of British parentage.^[1] He was a long-time cast member on the NBC sketch show Saturday Night Live in the late 1980s and the early 1990s and starred as the title characters in the films Wayne's World, Austin Powers, and the Shrek film series.

Early life[link]

Myers was born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario, the son of British-born parents Eric Myers (1922–1991), an insurance man and World War II veteran of the Royal Engineers, and his wife Alice E. (née Hind; born 1926), an office supervisor and veteran of the Royal Air Force.^[2] Both of his parents are from Liverpool, England. He has two older brothers, Peter Myers and Paul Myers, an indie rock singer-songwriter, broadcaster and author. Myers is of English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry,^[3] and was raised Protestant.^[4] He holds three citizenships, American, British, and Canadian.^[1]

Myers began school at Bishopbriggs Academy then changed to the Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute in Scarborough, Ontario. He began performing in commercials at age eight, and at ten he made a commercial for British Columbia Hydro Electric, with Gilda Radner playing his mother. When he graduated from high school, he joined the Second City Theatre. He left to tour Britain with comedian Neil Mullarkey.

Early career[link]

One of Myers's first acting jobs was in a TV commercial when he was ten years old.^[2] Gilda Radner played his mother. A few months later, according to Myers, his brother was teasing him about his "girlfriend (Radner) being on some stupid show on Saturday". Myers swore that, one day, he too would be on that show, the then-fledgling Saturday Night Live.

Myers graduated from high school in 1982 and was immediately accepted into the Second City Canadian Touring Company, after which he moved to the UK where in 1985 he was one of the founding members of The Comedy Store Players, an improvisational group based at The Comedy Store in London. The next year, he starred in the British children's TV program Wide Awake Club, parodying the show's normal exuberance with his own "Sound Asleep Club", in partnership with Neil Mullarkey. He returned to Toronto and Second City in 1986 as a cast member in the Second City's Toronto main stage show. In 1988 he moved from Second City in Toronto to Chicago. In Chicago, he trained and performed at the Improv Olympic. He made numerous appearances, including as Wayne Campbell, on Toronto's Citytv in the early 1980s, on the alternative video show City Limits hosted by Christopher Ward. Myers also appeared as his Wayne Campbell character in the music video for Ward's Canadian hit "Boys and Girls". Later, Ward appeared as one of Austin Powers' band members in Ming Tea in Myers's popular movie series. The Wayne Campbell character was featured extensively in the 1986 summer series It's Only Rock & Roll, produced by Toronto's Insight Production Company for CBC Television. Wayne appeared both in studio and in a series of location sketches directed and edited by Allan Novak. Myers wrote another sketch, Kurt and Dieter co-starring with Second City's Dana Andersen and also directed by Novak, which would later turn into the popular "Sprockets" sketch on Saturday Night Live.

On 3 July 2011 Myers returned to The Comedy Store in London to reprise his role 'for one night only' with the improvisational troupe (The Comedy Store Players). The UK comedy website Chortle were full of glowing praise for Myers, claiming "Myers himself excelled, (and was) strikingly adept and quick-witted, when his laughs came they were the biggest squeals of the night...this was no chore for Myers- being funny comes naturally to him- he could’ve spent the whole two hours farting the Canadian national anthem and the audience would’ve still lapped it up."^[5]

In 1992, Myers and Dana Carvey adapted Wayne's World into a full-length motion picture based on the SNL sketch. It was among the most successful movies of the year and the following year a sequel was released - Wayne's World 2. That year Myers also starred in So I Married an Axe Murderer which garnered a cult following. The characters in the movie were based on people Myers knew growing up in the Bridlewood section of Scarborough. After Wayne's World 2, Myers took a hiatus from television.

After a four year hiatus from television, Myers returned to acting in 1997 with the film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, then a sequel in 1999, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, finally topping it off with Austin Powers in Goldmember in 2002. Myers played both the title role (Austin Powers) and the villain (Dr. Evil), as well as other characters, in all three Austin Powers films. In 1998, he played one of his rare non-comedic roles in the film 54: Steve Rubell, proprietor of New York City's famous Studio 54, a 1970s discotheque. The film was moderately successful, and Myers's performance was widely praised. Myers later parodied the club as "Studio 69" in Goldmember.

In June 2000, Myers was sued by Universal Pictures for $3.8 million for backing out of a contract to play Dieter, the SNL character, in a feature film. Myers said he refused to honor the $20 million contract because he did not want to cheat moviegoers with an unacceptable script - one that he himself had written. Myers countersued, and a settlement was reached after several months where Myers agreed to make another film with Universal. That film would be The Cat in the Hat, released in November 2003 and starring Myers as the title character. In 2001, Myers played the title character in the DreamWorks animated film Shrek (2001). He reprised this role in Shrek 4-D in 2003, Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third, and the Christmas special Shrek The Halls, both in 2007. In 2009 he did another non-comedic role, as British General Ed Fenech, in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. In 2010 Myers returned for what is apparently the last in the Shrek series, Shrek Forever After. Myers made a cameo appearance in Britney Spears' music video 'Boys' as his film character Austin Powers. Myers is a member of the band Ming Tea along with The Bangles' guitarist and vocalist Susanna Hoffs and musician Matthew Sweet. They performed the songs "BBC" and "Daddy Wasn't There" for the Austin Powers movies.

In a 2005 poll to find The Comedian's Comedian, he was voted among the top 50 comedy acts ever by fellow comedians and comedy insiders.

During a CBS interview in 2007, Myers noted that he normally takes three years between films. He spends one year "living his life" and then writes various screenplays, develops characters, practices them in front of live audiences, and then selects one of the screenplays to film. Myers noted that this was the Marx Brothers' procedure for developing their film material.

Myers received the MTV Generation award in June 2007, making him the second Canadian to win the award (Jim Carrey was the first in 2006), for bringing his unique style of comedy to small and big screens alike.

Personal life[link]

Myers began dating actress and comedy writer Robin Ruzan in the late 1980s after meeting at a hockey game in Chicago, during which Myers caught a puck and used the incident as an icebreaker to strike up a conversation with Ruzan. The couple married in 1993, and Myers later referred to Ruzan as "his muse".^[6] The couple filed for divorce in December 2005.^[7]

In 2006, cafe owner Kelly Tisdale confirmed reports that she and Myers were dating, telling the National Enquirer, "we're actually surprised you didn't find out about us sooner." Myers and Tisdale wed in New York in the fall of 2010.^[8] The couple have a son, Spike, born in September 2011.^[9]

Myers is a Dungeons & Dragons player^[10] and was one of several celebrities to have participated in the Worldwide Dungeons & Dragons Game Day in 2006.^[11]

Myers has played for Hollywood United F.C., a celebrity football team.^[12] He played in the 2010 Soccer Aid for UNICEF UK football match, England vs. R.O.W (Rest of the World) and scored his penalty during a sudden death shootout after the game ended 2-2 (June 6, 2010). The Rest of the World team beat England for the first time since the tournament started.

Chad Jones (born 15 June 1984) is an Australian rules footballer currently playing for the Claremont Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). He previously played for the Kangaroos and the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL).

Early career[link]

The brother of West Coast Eagles premiership player Brett Jones, Jones originally played for Wembley Downs JFC.^[1] Educated at Hale School, he played Alcock Cup matches before being recruited to Claremont in the WAFL. He made his senior debut for Claremont in round 1, 2003, against Peel Thunder, playing eight games and kicking 11 goals.^[2] He was recruited to the Kangaroos with pick number 24 in the 2003 National Draft.

2004–08: AFL career[link]

Jones made his AFL debut in round 6 of the 2004 season against the Western Bulldogs, recording five disposals before being dropped for the next game.^[3] He returned to play two more games late in the season, but mainly played with the club's VFL-affiliate, Port Melbourne. He did not play a game in 2005, spending the entire season in the VFL. After being reassigned to the Tasmanian Devils in the VFL for 2006, Jones managed three consecutive games for the Kangaroos in rounds 11–13, but these were his last games for the club as he was de-listed at the end of the season.^[3]

Jones was recruited by the West Coast Eagles with pick 45 in the 2007 Rookie Draft, joining his brother at the club.^[4] After kicking 42 goals from 11 games for Claremont at WAFL level, including a run of 26 goals in four games,^[2] Jones made his debut for West Coast in round 13 of the 2007 season, against Adelaide, kicking three goals playing at centre half-forward.^[5] He kicked four behinds from 13 possession in his next game, against the Brisbane Lions, but was dropped two games after, returning for one game in round 22. His form for Claremont was consistent however, and he finished with 63.41 for the season, second only to Anthony Jones (68 goals) as Claremont's leading goalkicker. He played in the club's Grand Final loss to Subiaco, and also represented the WAFL in interstate football against the Victorian Football League (VFL), kicking two goals.

After spending the first three rounds of the season in the WAFL, kicking 15 goals for Claremont, Jones played three more games for West Coast from rounds 5–7, kicking five goals, but severely sprained his ankle at training, missing a month of football.^[6] He returned to football at WAFL level in round 14 against Peel Thunder,^[3] but was unable to break back into the Eagles' line-up due to the form of Quinten Lynch, Ben McKinley and Ashley Hansen. He was de-listed by West Coast at the end of the season.^[7]

2009–present: Return to WAFL[link]

Jones emerged as a full-forward in 2009, kicking 77 goals to be Claremont's leading goalkicker, also winning the Bernie Naylor Medal as the WAFL's leading goalkicker. He continued this form in the 2010 season, kicking 85 goals, including two eight-goal hauls and one haul ten-goal 27-possession game against Peel Thunder, to again win the Bernie Naylor Medal. He was also selected to represent the WAFL against the VFL in the 2010 state game, kicking four goals.^[2]
