Published by the Oxford University Press, this is the new ninth edition of a long established and highly regarded work, which, in one substantial volume, of almost 2,000 pages, provides all the key materials required by the busy immigration law practitioner who needs to stay up to date with all recent developments -- – and these are considerable. There have been some twenty-one Statements of Changes to the Immigration Rules since the last edition of this book, as the authors point out.
Certainly there have been substantial changes to existing legislation brought about by the Immigration Act 2014, which, as the authors also point out, introduces new restrictions on access to housing, as well as other facilities and services. It has also wrought significant changes to the existing law affecting detention, enforcement, marriage, deprivation of citizenship and more besides.
Note that the text of the Immigration Act 2014 is contained in this volume, together with the resulting changes to existing legislation, notably the Immigration Act 1971 and the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002.
Also included are the Immigration Rules (revised to incorporate changes announced in October 2014)…. new EU regulations… new Procedure Rules for the First-tier Tribunal… the Procedure Rules for the Upper Tribunal… and changes to EEA regulations.
As global considerations are now of prime importance in this area of law, it is most useful for practitioners that the Handbook also contains, in addition to European Materials and Statutory Instruments, a section of almost 300 pages of International Materials, in particular the UNHCR Handbook on Procedures and Criteria for determining Refugee Status, which provides the most recent guidance on refugee claims. The Convention on Rights of the Child -- and other conventions on human rights, torture, and stateless persons -- are included in this section.
It is important to emphasize that one of the major strengths of this Handbook is that it covers both recent new legislation and the existing legislation that precedes it. The Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1962 was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Before the Act was passed, citizens of British Commonwealth countries had extensive rights to migrate to the UK. In response to a perceived heavy influx of immigrants, the Conservative Party government tightened the regulations, permitting only those with government-issued employment vouchers, limited in number, to settle. The leader of the opposition in Parliament at the time, Hugh Gaitskell, called the act "cruel and brutal anti-colour legislation".
The Act was amended by the Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1968 and another new Act, Immigration Act 1971, came into force in 1971.
These Acts resulted from widespread opposition to immigration in Britain from a variety of political groups, but most notably the Conservative Monday Club, whose Members of Parliament were very active and vocal in their opposition to mass immigration.

The appellants all had leave to remain in the United Kingdom, and applied for further leave to remain before the expiry of their original leave. The Secretary of State rejected and returned their applications as invalid, after expiry of their leave. The appellants' re-submitted applications were considered and refused by the Secretary of State on the premise that they were overstayers. If the original invalid applications triggered the automatic extension of leave, the appellants' applications would have been considered differently and may have succeeded. The issue in these cases is whether s.3C of the Immigration Act 1971 automatically extends a person's leave to remain pending the determination of an application to extend leave to remain, notwithstanding that the original application is invalid.
The Supreme Court unanimously dismisses the appeals.

This documentary covers the single largest migration of immigrants to the United States of America through Ellis Island between 1890 and 1920. About the immigration to the USA until 1930:
The history of immigration to the United States is a continuing story of peoples from more populated continents, particularly Europe and also Africa and Asia, crossing oceans to the New World. Historians do not treat the first indigenous settlers as immigrants. Starting around 1600 British and other Europeans settled primarily on the east coast. Later Africans were brought as slaves. During the nation's history, the growing country experienced successive waves of immigration which rose and fell over time, particularly from Europe, with the cost of transoceanic transportation sometimes paid by travelers becoming indentured servants after their arrival in the New World. At other times, immigration rules became more restrictive.
American immigration history can be viewed in four epochs: the colonial period, the mid-19th century, the start of the 20th century, and post-1965. Each period brought distinct national groups and ethnicities to the United States. During the 17th century, approximately 175,000 Englishmen migrated to Colonial America. Over half of all European immigrants to Colonial America during the 17th and 18th centuries arrived as indentured servants. The mid-19th century saw mainly an influx from northern Europe; the early 20th-century mainly from Southern and Eastern Europe; post-1965 mostly from Latin America and Asia.
Historians estimate that fewer than one million immigrants - perhaps as few as 400,000 - crossed the Atlantic during the 17th and 18th centuries. The 1790 Act limited naturalization to "free European persons"; it was expanded to include Africans in the 1860s and Asians in the 1950s. In the early years of the United States, immigration was fewer than 8,000 people a year. After 1820, immigration gradually increased. From 1836 to 1914, over 30 million Europeans migrated to the United States. The mortality rate on these transatlantic voyages was high, during which one in seven travelers died. In 1875, the nation passed its first immigration law, the Page Act of 1875.
The peak year of European immigration was in 1907, when 1,285,349 persons entered the country. By 1910, 13.5 million immigrants were living in the United States. In 1921, the Congress passed the Emergency Quota Act, followed by the Immigration Act of 1924. The 1924 Act was aimed at further restricting the Southern and Eastern Europeans, especially Jews, Italians, and Slavs, who had begun to enter the country in large numbers beginning in the 1890s.
About the Americanization in the 1910s and 1920s:
Americanization is the process of an immigrant to the United States of America becoming a person who shares American values, beliefs and customs and is assimilated into American society. This process typically involves learning English and adjusting to American culture, and customs, while keeping the old foods and religion.
The Americanization movement was a nationwide organized effort in the 1910s to bring millions of recent immigrants into the American cultural system. More than 30 states passed laws requiring Americanization programs. The movement climaxed during World War I, as eligible young immigrant men were drafted into the Army, and the nation made every effort to integrate the European ethnic groups into the national identity.

The Tunisian Appellant married a UK national in 1996 and had a daughter in 1997. He entered the UK in 1997 and was granted indefinite leave to remain in 1999. He and his wife separated and he remained in the UK. In 2006, his then partner gave birth to their son. In 2005 the Appellant pleaded guilty to offences of assault causing GBH under s.20 of the OAPA 1861 and possession of an offensive weapon, relating to an incident in 2003 for which he received a sentence of 39 months imprisonment. He was not required to go back to prison due to time served on remand. He was subsequently convicted of a number of other less serious offences. He has not seen his daughter since 2003 and an application for contact was dismissed by the court in 2008. He has not seen his son since 2010 and his application for contact was dismissed by the court in 2011. He has been unable to work since 2006/2007 following a serious assault. The Secretary of State made a deportation order against the Appellant in October 2012 on the basis of his conviction in 2005 and rejected his claim that this would infringe his rights under Article 8 ECHR. His children were not consulted before the decision to deport him was taken.
The issue in this case was whether the Respondent failed to properly consider the Article 8 rights and best interests of the Appellant's children, and if so whether that meant the decision to deport the Appellant was not "in accordance with the law" and proportionate. Further, whether the Court of Appeal erred in its interpretation of "public interest" in Section 3(5)(a) and Section 5(1) of the Immigration Act 1971 and Article 8(2) ECHR and of the proportionality of deporting the Appellant under Article 8(2) and failed to conduct a proper assessment of all relevant factors and in particular to give sufficient weight to the remarks of the sentencing judge; the fact that the appellant has not been convicted of a serious offence of violence since April 2003; and the delay of the respondent in deporting the appellant.
The Supreme Court unanimously dismisses Mr Makhlouf’s appeal.

Secretary of State
Secretary of State or State Secretary is a commonly used title for a senior or mid-level post in governments around the world. The role varies between countries, and in some cases there are multiple Secretaries of State in the Government.
In many countries, a Secretary of State is a mid-level post. It is usually a politically appointed position, although in some countries, such as Germany and Sweden, it can be filled by a member of the executive bureaucracy (civil service) as a political appointment. In the Holy See, there is one Secretary of State, who coordinates all the departments of the Roman Curia (that is, equivalent to a Prime Minister). Home Office
The Home Office (HO) is a ministerial department of the Her Majesty's Government, responsible for immigration, security, and law and order. As such it is responsible for the police, British Visas and Immigration, and the Security Service (MI5). It is also in charge of government policy on security-related issues such as drugs, counter-terrorism, and ID cards. It was formerly responsible for Her Majesty's Prison Service and Probation Service, but these have transferred to the Ministry of Justice.
It continues to be known, especially in official papers and when referred to in Parliament, as the Home Department.

Ellis Island
Ellis Island is an island located in Upper New York Bay in the Port of New York and New Jersey, United States. It was the gateway for millions of immigrants to the United States as the nation's busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892 until 1954. The island was greatly expanded with land reclamation between 1892 and 1934. Before that, the much smaller original island was the site of Fort Gibson and later a naval magazine. The island was made part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965, and has hosted a museum of immigration since 1990. Long considered part of New York, a 1998 United States Supreme Court decision found that most of the island is in New Jersey. The south side of the island, home to the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital, is closed to the general public and the object of restoration efforts spearheaded by Save Ellis Island.
Geography and access
Ellis Island is located in the Upper New York Bay, east of Liberty State Park and north of Liberty Island, in Jersey City, New Jersey with a small section that is territory of New York City enclaved within it. Largely created through land reclamation, the island covers a land area of 27.5 acres (11.1 ha), most of which is part of New Jersey. The 2.74-acre (1.11 ha) natural island and contiguous areas comprise the 3.3 acres (1.3 ha) that are part of New York.

Historians do not treat the first indigenous settlers as immigrants. Starting around 1600 British and other Europeans settled primarily on the east coast. Later Africans were brought as slaves. During the nation's history, the growing country experienced successive waves of immigration which rose and fell over time, particularly from Europe, with the cost of transoceanic transportation sometimes paid by travelers becoming indentured servants after their arrival in the New World. At other times, immigration rules became more restrictive. American immigration history can be viewed in four epochs: the colonial period, the mid-19th century, the start of the 20th century, and post-1965. Each period brought distinct national groups and ethnicities to the United States. During the 17th century, approximately 175,000 Englishmen migrated to Colonial America. Over half of all European immigrants to Colonial America during the 17th and 18th centuries arrived as indentured servants. The mid-19th century saw mainly an influx from northern Europe; the early 20th-century mainly from Southern and Eastern Europe; post-1965 mostly from Latin America and Asia. Historians estimate that fewer than one million immigrants - perhaps as few as 400,000 - crossed the Atlantic during the 17th and 18th centuries. The 1790 Act limited naturalization to "free European persons"; it was expanded to include Africans in the 1860s and Asians in the 1950s. In the early years of the United States, immigration was fewer than 8,000 people a year. After 1820, immigration gradually increased. From 1836 to 1914, over 30 million Europeans migrated to the United States. The mortality rate on these transatlantic voyages was high, during which one in seven travelers died. In 1875, the nation passed its first immigration law, the Page Act of 1875. The peak year of European immigration was in 1907, when 1,285,349 persons entered the country. By 1910, 13.5 million immigrants were living in the United States. In 1921, the Congress passed the Emergency Quota Act, followed by the Immigration Act of 1924. The 1924 Act was aimed at further restricting the Southern and Eastern Europeans, especially Jews, Italians, and Slavs, who had begun to enter the country in large numbers beginning in the 1890s. About the Americanization in the 1910s and 1920s: Americanization is the process of an immigrant to the United States of America becoming a person who shares American values, beliefs and customs and is assimilated into American society. This process typically involves learning English and adjusting to American culture, and customs, while keeping the old foods and religion. The Americanization movement was a nationwide organized effort in the 1910s to bring millions of recent immigrants into the American cultural system. More than 30 states passed laws requiring Americanization programs. The movement climaxed during World War I, as eligible young immigrant men were drafted into the Army, and the nation made every effort to integrate the European ethnic groups into the national identity. [2016] UKSC 59 UKSC 2015/0092 Makhlouf (Appellant) v Secretary of State for the Home Department (Respondent) (Northern Ireland) On appeal from the Court of Appeal of Northern Ireland The Tunisian Appellant married a UK national in 1996 and had a daughter in 1997. He entered the UK in 1997 and was granted indefinite leave to remain in 1999. He and his wife separated and he remained in the UK. In 2006, his then partner gave birth to their son. In 2005 the Appellant pleaded guilty to offences of assault causing GBH under s.20 of the OAPA 1861 and possession of an offensive weapon, relating to an incident in 2003 for which he received a sentence of 39 months imprisonment. He was not required to go back to prison due to time served on remand. He was subsequently convicted of a number of other less serious offences. He has not seen his daughter since 2003 and an application for contact was dismissed by the court in 2008. He has not seen his son since 2010 and his application for contact was dismissed by the court in 2011. He has been unable to work since 2006/2007 following a serious assault. The Secretary of State made a deportation order against the Appellant in October 2012 on the basis of his conviction in 2005 and rejected his claim that this would infringe his rights under Article 8 ECHR. His children were not consulted before the decision to deport him was taken. The issue in this case was whether the Respondent failed to properly consider the Article 8 rights and best interests of the Appellant's children, and if so whether that meant the decision to deport the Appellant was not "in accordance with the law" and proportionate. Further, whether the Court of Appeal erred in its interpretation of "public interest" in Section 3(5)(a) and Section 5(1) of the Immigration Act 1971 and Article 8(2) ECHR and of the proportionality of deporting the Appellant under Article 8(2) and failed to conduct a proper assessment of all relevant factors and in particular to give sufficient weight to the remarks of the sentencing judge; the fact that the appellant has not been convicted of a serious offence of violence since April 2003; and the delay of the respondent in deporting the appellant. The Supreme Court unanimously dismisses Mr Makhlouf’s appeal. -

Certainly there have been substantial changes to existing legislation brought about by the Immigration Act 2014, which, as the authors also point out, introduces new restrictions on access to housing, as well as other facilities and services. It has also wrought significant changes to the existing law affecting detention, enforcement, marriage, deprivation of citizenship and more besides.
Note that the text of the Immigration Act 2014 is contained in this volume, together with the resulting changes to existing legislation, notably the Immigration Act 1971 and the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002.
Also included are the Immigration Rules (revised to incorporate changes announced in October 2014)…. new EU regulations… new Procedure Rules for the First-tier Tribunal… the Procedure Rules for the Upper Tribunal… and changes to EEA regulations.
As global considerations are now of prime importance in this area of law, it is most useful for practitioners that the Handbook also contains, in addition to European Materials and Statutory Instruments, a section of almost 300 pages of International Materials, in particular the UNHCR Handbook on Procedures and Criteria for determining Refugee Status, which provides the most recent guidance on refugee claims. The Convention on Rights of the Child -- and other conventions on human rights, torture, and stateless persons -- are included in this section.
It is important to emphasize that one of the major strengths of this Handbook is that it covers both recent new legislation and the existing legislation that precedes it. The result is a highly efficient and reliable reference tool for Asylum and Immigration Tribunal judges and of course, barristers, solicitors and other advisers practising in the areas of immigration, asylum and human rights law. About the immigration to the USA until 1930:
The history of immigration to the United States is a continuing story of peoples from more populated continents, particularly Europe and also Africa and Asia, crossing oceans to the New World. Historians do not treat the first indigenous settlers as immigrants. Starting around 1600 British and other Europeans settled primarily on the east coast. Later Africans were brought as slaves. During the nation's history, the growing country experienced successive waves of immigration which rose and fell over time, particularly from Europe, with the cost of transoceanic transportation sometimes paid by travelers becoming indentured servants after their arrival in the New World. At other times, immigration rules became more restrictive.
American immigration history can be viewed in four epochs: the colonial period, the mid-19th century, the start of the 20th century, and post-1965. Each period brought distinct national groups and ethnicities to the United States. During the 17th century, approximately 175,000 Englishmen migrated to Colonial America. Over half of all European immigrants to Colonial America during the 17th and 18th centuries arrived as indentured servants. The mid-19th century saw mainly an influx from northern Europe; the early 20th-century mainly from Southern and Eastern Europe; post-1965 mostly from Latin America and Asia.
Historians estimate that fewer than one million immigrants - perhaps as few as 400,000 - crossed the Atlantic during the 17th and 18th centuries. The 1790 Act limited naturalization to "free European persons"; it was expanded to include Africans in the 1860s and Asians in the 1950s. In the early years of the United States, immigration was fewer than 8,000 people a year. After 1820, immigration gradually increased. From 1836 to 1914, over 30 million Europeans migrated to the United States. The mortality rate on these transatlantic voyages was high, during which one in seven travelers died. In 1875, the nation passed its first immigration law, the Page Act of 1875.
The peak year of European immigration was in 1907, when 1,285,349 persons entered the country. By 1910, 13.5 million immigrants were living in the United States. In 1921, the Congress passed the Emergency Quota Act, followed by the Immigration Act of 1924. The 1924 Act was aimed at further restricting the Southern and Eastern Europeans, especially Jews, Italians, and Slavs, who had begun to enter the country in large numbers beginning in the 1890s.

(Ellis Island, in Upper New York Bay, was the gateway for millions of immigrants as the busiest immigrant inspection station of the United States from 1892 until 1954.)
It is the story of Ellis Island and the American immigration experience. The Tunisian Appellant married a UK national in 1996 and had a daughter in 1997. He entered the UK in 1997 and was granted indefinite leave to remain in 1999. He and his wife separated and he remained in the UK. In 2006, his then partner gave birth to their son. In 2005 the Appellant pleaded guilty to offences of assault causing GBH under s.20 of the OAPA 1861 and possession of an offensive weapon, relating to an incident in 2003 for which he received a sentence of 39 months imprisonment. He was not required to go back to prison due to time served on remand. He was subsequently convicted of a number of other less serious offences. He has not seen his daughter since 2003 and an application for contact was dismissed by the court in 2008. He has not seen his son since 2010 and his application for contact was dismissed by the court in 2011. He has been unable to work since 2006/2007 following a serious assault. The Secretary of State made a deportation order against the Appellant in October 2012 on the basis of his conviction in 2005 and rejected his claim that this would infringe his rights under Article 8 ECHR. His children were not consulted before the decision to deport him was taken.
The issue in this case was whether the Respondent failed to properly consider the Article 8 rights and best interests of the Appellant's children, and if so whether that meant the decision to deport the Appellant was not "in accordance with the law" and proportionate. Further, whether the Court of Appeal erred in its interpretation of "public interest" in Section 3(5)(a) and Section 5(1) of the Immigration Act 1971 and Article 8(2) ECHR and of the proportionality of deporting the Appellant under Article 8(2) and failed to conduct a proper assessment of all relevant factors and in particular to give sufficient weight to the remarks of the sentencing judge; the fact that the appellant has not been convicted of a serious offence of violence since April 2003; and the delay of the respondent in deporting the appellant.
The Supreme Court unanimously dismisses Mr Makhlouf’s appeal.

In this travel video guide to San Francisco, I travel to San Francisco, California, one of the most scenic cities in the United States, if not the world.
In town for a conference for only four days, only one of which was going to be sunny, I headed out to see as much as I could in a day. I started my day by visiting the Haight-Ashbury district, San Francisco's most famous neighborhood. Ground zero for the Summer of Love, this neighborhood's bohemian past is still evident as you walk around the area, though things have changed quite a bit.
Next I headed to the Mission District, San Francisco's "It" neighborhood right now. Home to a large and varied immigrant population, cheap rents have lured many a young and hip individual to the area, evidenced by the artisanal chocolate shops, used book stores and proliferation of coffee shops. There are also great taco shops here. I visit Taqueria Cancun and El Toro to see which I liked best.
Then I hopped on a boat to get a unique view of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, which we sailed under, then traveled past Alcatraz Island and Angel Island.
Wrapping things up, I walked through the Presidio for a pilgrimage to Lucasfilm, complete with a Yoda fountain, then hiked one of the Presidio's many trails to get a great view as the sun set over the bay.

At the heart of Portland is the amphitheater on Pioneer Courthouse Square. The Portland Art Museum here is the oldest museum in the region. The Tom McCall Waterside Park is a good spot for people-watching. Several bridges give access to the east bank, where the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is located.
Portland's climate is ideal for growing roses, showcased in the International Rose Test Garden. The nearby Japanese Garden is one of the most authentic outside of Asia. Washington Park offers lush gardens and trails. Oregon Zoo is a family favorite. Opposite this is the Portland Children's Museum.
Benson Bridge provides the best vantage point for the stunning Multnomah Falls. Viewing points around the National Volcanic Monument show off the active Mount St Helens.

In this travel video tour of Portland, Oregon, I travel to Portland, one of the most unique cities in the United States.
I started my trip off by hopping off a plane and then immediately hopping onto a bus. But not just any bus, a bus operated by Brewvana Brewery Tours, the mostly women-run craft beer brewery tour company. Portland, or know as Beervana to some, is home to 55 breweries within its borders, and is truly a beer-lover's paradise. On my tour we made stops at Rogue Ales & Spirits, Laurelwood Pubic House & Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Sidecar Bar, where I had the chance to sit down over a pint with the founder and owner of Brewvana, Ashley Rose Salvitti.
While in Portland, I stayed at the Tiny House Hotel, a hotel made up of, you guessed it, tiny houses. In the next portion of my video guide I give a tour of my "crib" to show what it's like to live and stay in a tiny house.
Then, in an effort to get a chance to experience the famed brunch scene in Portland, I stopped in at The Tin Shed Garden Cafe, located down the street from where I was staying in the New Alberta Arts District.
In the interest of learning more about food, I headed to the downtown location of the Portland Farmers Market, located in a beautiful stretch of downtown Portland. Here, I got a tour of the grounds with Mona Johnson, then had the opportunity to meet up with some of the vendors, including Matt Choi of Choi's Kimchi Company, and famed chef and artisanal pickle impresario, David Barber of Picklopolis and Bingo! Sandwiches.
In need of a little peace and serenity, I then visited the Lan Su Chinese Garden, a peaceful and beautiful oasis in an otherwise busy and hectic part of downtown.
When visiting Portland, there's no reason to spend all your time in the city, especially with so much to do outside the city limits. The next day I took a road trip with local Matthew Domingo to explore the Columbia River Gorge and the numerous trails and waterfalls just off the road you can check out.
Then, to wrap things up, we stopped in at Hood River Organic near the riverside town of Hood River, an organic orchard and farm run by East Coast ex-pat Dan Thall, who gave us a tour of his land. Once the day ended we then headed out to happy hour at Solera Brewery in the imposing shadow of Mount Hood and then into town for a dinner featuring mushroom pizza with mushrooms Dan had grown and recently delivered to the restaurant.

Pat is a RN with 37 years of experience and decided to try travel nursing later in life after her children grew up and left her home. Chelsey is a young RN from Georgia; she met several new friends while travel nursing and even tried sushi for the first time! She said "we don’t have sushi in Georgia!"

Megan McCormick ventures into the countries on the Arabian Gulf – Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Oman – an area of ancient of kingdoms that’s synonymous with oil but still one of the most misunderstood areas of the entire world.
Megan’s journey begins in the oil fields of Kuwait where she witnesses the devastation caused by the Iraqi invasion of 1990. As the army retreated under the Allied bombardment, Desert Storm, it set alight to dozens of oil fields causing an environmental catastrophe.
Visiting its capital, Kuwait City, she finds that the superficial scars of the war have healed; in the city’s souks traditional Arab life continues. However, a meeting with a Kuwaiti prisoner of war on the festive Liberation Day (26 February) reveals that there are still hundreds of Kuwaitis who have never been released by the Iraqi regime.
Megan visits the Bergen oil field, half an hour south of the city, to view the production of the world’s most important, yet most vexed, commodity. Her gaze turns from the international to the local when she accepts an invite to stay with a Kuwaiti family in a Bedouin camp in the desert. This is a spring tradition that many Kuwaitis hold dear – although nowadays their tents come with all the mod-cons like electricity and bathrooms!
With a half-hour flight across the deserts of Saudi Arabia, Megan finds herself moving rapidly into the future in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. She checks into the world’s only seven star hotel, the Burj Al Arab, which dominates the city’s skyline with its dhow sail-like shape. From here she explores the high-tech excitement Dubai has to offer: the Wild Waddy water park and the Palm Sails project – a palm-shaped man-made island offering premier residential and resort living. For a taste of the traditional among the jet-set ambience of this city she visits one of its 34 malls where she tries on the ‘abayya’ veil worn by Muslim women. Two hours along the coast Megan arrives in Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital and the business centre of the Gulf. She visits Women She Zone mall, the world’s first female-only shopping centre, where women can be themselves in this male-dominated society.
With 95 per cent of UAE desert, the inhabitants have found novel ways of incorporating into their lives. Megan tries her hand at golf in the sand but finds that she’s far better-off driving across it in a 4-wheel drive with Offroad Emirates. The company offers tours around the magnificent dunes of the Liwa Oasis on the edge of the aptly named ‘Empty Quarter’ – just a million square miles of sand.
To find out just how rich this country is, Megan goes to meet the nephew of its president, Sheikh Hamed. This flamboyant sheik’s car collection includes a giant custom-made Dodge pickup truck and probably the world’s biggest motor home; each tyre is three metres high, is made of 1.5 tonnes of rubber and costs $16,000!
She travels across the border into Oman and discovers one of the hidden jewels of the Gulf, a country far more immersed in its heritage than its neighbours. She visits the port city Muscat, home to the most authentic souk in the whole of Arabia. Here she wanders through a living embodiment of traditional Islamic life where you can buy abbayas, silver, gold, spices, flowers and much more.
A trip to the Sultan Kabuz Grand Mosque leaves Megan higher than a flying carpet; this monumental building is made of graceful white marble and houses the largest chandelier and carpet in the world.
Leaving the city behind her, Megan tries her hand at cattle shopping in Nizwa before getting out into Oman’s beautiful natural surroundings. She treks down a mountain called Wadi Bani Khalid in the Hajar mountains, an area that sees water year-round – a precious commodity in this desert country – with a guide from Nomadic Explorer. For a further dose of tradition, Megan travels to Sur on the easternmost point of Arabia to watch the dhow ships being built. The builders don’t use plans, instead they do it all by eye and it works! People come here from all over the Gulf to buy a ship.
Then it’s back for a stop at the luxurious Al-Bustan Palace in Muscat for a night of rest before Megan embarks on the final leg of her journey to the south of the country. She flies to the town of Salah, near the Yemeni border, home to the biblical perfume Frankincense. Megan strikes a great bargain in a perfume souk for the divine incense before going to the only place in the world where trees produce this scent. She meets Musalem, one of the lucky few allowed to harvest this precious commodity that has brought wealth to Oman for centuries.
The next day Megan visits Job’s tomb, a local man whose story is revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike, before setting off into the desert for a last night with a Bedouin guide.

She checks into the world’s only seven star hotel, the Burj Al Arab, which dominates the city’s skyline with its dhow sail-like shape. From here she explores the high-tech excitement Dubai has to offer: the Wild Waddy water park and the Palm Sails project – a palm-shaped man-made island offering premier residential and resort living. For a taste of the traditional among the jet-set ambience of this city she visits one of its 34 malls where she tries on the ‘abayya’ veil worn by Muslim women. Two hours along the coast Megan arrives in Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital and the business centre of the Gulf. She visits Women She Zone mall, the world’s first female-only shopping centre, where women can be themselves in this male-dominated society.
With 95 per cent of UAE desert, the inhabitants have found novel ways of incorporating into their lives. Megan tries her hand at golf in the sand but finds that she’s far better-off driving across it in a 4-wheel drive with Offroad Emirates. The company offers tours around the magnificent dunes of the Liwa Oasis on the edge of the aptly named ‘Empty Quarter’ – just a million square miles of sand.
To find out just how rich this country is, Megan goes to meet the nephew of its president, Sheikh Hamed. This flamboyant sheik’s car collection includes a giant custom-made Dodge pickup truck and probably the world’s biggest motor home; each tyre is three metres high, is made of 1.5 tonnes of rubber and costs $16,000!
She travels across the border into Oman and discovers one of the hidden jewels of the Gulf, a country far more immersed in its heritage than its neighbours. She visits the port city Muscat, home to the most authentic souk in the whole of Arabia. Here she wanders through a living embodiment of traditional Islamic life where you can buy abbayas, silver, gold, spices, flowers and much more.
A trip to the Sultan Kabuz Grand Mosque leaves Megan higher than a flying carpet; this monumental building is made of graceful white marble and houses the largest chandelier and carpet in the world.
Leaving the city behind her, Megan tries her hand at cattle shopping in Nizwa before getting out into Oman’s beautiful natural surroundings. She treks down a mountain called Wadi Bani Khalid in the Hajar mountains, an area that sees water year-round – a precious commodity in this desert country – with a guide from Nomadic Explorer. For a further dose of tradition, Megan travels to Sur on the easternmost point of Arabia to watch the dhow ships being built. The builders don’t use plans, instead they do it all by eye and it works! People come here from all over the Gulf to buy a ship.
Then it’s back for a stop at the luxurious Al-Bustan Palace in Muscat for a night of rest before Megan embarks on the final leg of her journey to the south of the country. She flies to the town of Salah, near the Yemeni border, home to the biblical perfume Frankincense. Megan strikes a great bargain in a perfume souk for the divine incense before going to the only place in the world where trees produce this scent. She meets Musalem, one of the lucky few allowed to harvest this precious commodity that has brought wealth to Oman for centuries.
The next day Megan visits Job’s tomb, a local man whose story is revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike, before setting off into the desert for a last night with a Bedouin guide.

Arches National Park is a 'protected area of the United States that preserves over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch.
The first viewpoint you meet after the Visitor Center is to Park Avenue. From here you can observe very high red rocks that resemble the skyscrapers of New York, hence the name of Park Avenue.
We move to the next viewpoint, the La Sal Mountain Viewpoint. From here we begin to understand how big the park. Also you can see other rock characteristics conformations
We reach now, one of the most famous attractions of the park, once again it will not be an arc but a curiously shaped rock that seems about to fall off a spike, we are at Balanced Rock.
The total height of Balanced Rock is about 39 meters of which only the rock that rests on the base measures approximately 17 meters. By walking around you can see how the perspective and the effect "fall" changes depending on the angle in which you look.
A few years ago, Balanced Rock had a companion, a lot like rock, but much smaller, unfortunately fell during the winter 1975/1976.
Immediately after the Balanced Rock is the Windows Section where you can see up close the first string.
We head to the North and the South Window and then to Turret Arch.
From the parking lot we see the Double Arch.
From the Fiery Furnace viewpoint we observe this magnificent natural labyrinth between the rocks.
The visit to this site is limited and it takes a ranger as a guide.
As a last stop in Arches National Park we go to the Delicate Arch Viewpoint
Delicate Arch is the symbol of the state of Utah.
We would have preferred to get as close as possible to the arc, instead we observe it from a mile away, seeing him so from a broader perspective and equally spectacular

Certainly there have been substantial changes to existing legislation brought about by the Immigration Act 2014, which, as the authors also point out, introduces new restrictions on access to housing, as well as other facilities and services. It has also wrought significant changes to the existing law affecting detention, enforcement, marriage, deprivation of citizenship and more besides.
Note that the text of the Immigration Act 2014 is contained in this volume, together with the resulting changes to existing legislation, notably the Immigration Act 1971 and the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002.
Also included are the Immigration Rules (revised to incorporate changes announced in October 2014)…. new EU regulations… new Procedure Rules for the First-tier Tribunal… the Procedure Rules for the Upper Tribunal… and changes to EEA regulations.
As global considerations are now of prime importance in this area of law, it is most useful for practitioners that the Handbook also contains, in addition to European Materials and Statutory Instruments, a section of almost 300 pages of International Materials, in particular the UNHCR Handbook on Procedures and Criteria for determining Refugee Status, which provides the most recent guidance on refugee claims. The Convention on Rights of the Child -- and other conventions on human rights, torture, and stateless persons -- are included in this section.
It is important to emphasize that one of the major strengths of this Handbook is that it covers both recent new legislation and the existing legislation that precedes it. About the immigration to the USA until 1930:
The history of immigration to the United States is a continuing story of peoples from more populated continents, particularly Europe and also Africa and Asia, crossing oceans to the New World. Historians do not treat the first indigenous settlers as immigrants. Starting around 1600 British and other Europeans settled primarily on the east coast. Later Africans were brought as slaves. During the nation's history, the growing country experienced successive waves of immigration which rose and fell over time, particularly from Europe, with the cost of transoceanic transportation sometimes paid by travelers becoming indentured servants after their arrival in the New World. At other times, immigration rules became more restrictive.
American immigration history can be viewed in four epochs: the colonial period, the mid-19th century, the start of the 20th century, and post-1965. Each period brought distinct national groups and ethnicities to the United States. During the 17th century, approximately 175,000 Englishmen migrated to Colonial America. Over half of all European immigrants to Colonial America during the 17th and 18th centuries arrived as indentured servants. The mid-19th century saw mainly an influx from northern Europe; the early 20th-century mainly from Southern and Eastern Europe; post-1965 mostly from Latin America and Asia.
Historians estimate that fewer than one million immigrants - perhaps as few as 400,000 - crossed the Atlantic during the 17th and 18th centuries. The 1790 Act limited naturalization to "free European persons"; it was expanded to include Africans in the 1860s and Asians in the 1950s. In the early years of the United States, immigration was fewer than 8,000 people a year. After 1820, immigration gradually increased. From 1836 to 1914, over 30 million Europeans migrated to the United States. The mortality rate on these transatlantic voyages was high, during which one in seven travelers died. In 1875, the nation passed its first immigration law, the Page Act of 1875.
The peak year of European immigration was in 1907, when 1,285,349 persons entered the country. By 1910, 13.5 million immigrants were living in the United States. In 1921, the Congress passed the Emergency Quota Act, followed by the Immigration Act of 1924. The 1924 Act was aimed at further restricting the Southern and Eastern Europeans, especially Jews, Italians, and Slavs, who had begun to enter the country in large numbers beginning in the 1890s.

The Tunisian Appellant married a UK national in 1996 and had a daughter in 1997. He entered the UK in 1997 and was granted indefinite leave to remain in 1999. He and his wife separated and he remained in the UK. In 2006, his then partner gave birth to their son. In 2005 the Appellant pleaded guilty to offences of assault causing GBH under s.20 of the OAPA 1861 and possession of an offensive weapon, relating to an incident in 2003 for which he received a sentence of 39 months imprisonment. He was not required to go back to prison due to time served on remand. He was subsequently convicted of a number of other less serious offences. He has not seen his daughter since 2003 and an application for contact was dismissed by the court in 2008. He has not seen his son since 2010 and his application for contact was dismissed by the court in 2011. He has been unable to work since 2006/2007 following a serious assault. The Secretary of State made a deportation order against the Appellant in October 2012 on the basis of his conviction in 2005 and rejected his claim that this would infringe his rights under Article 8 ECHR. His children were not consulted before the decision to deport him was taken.
The issue in this case was whether the Respondent failed to properly consider the Article 8 rights and best interests of the Appellant's children, and if so whether that meant the decision to deport the Appellant was not "in accordance with the law" and proportionate. Further, whether the Court of Appeal erred in its interpretation of "public interest" in Section 3(5)(a) and Section 5(1) of the Immigration Act 1971 and Article 8(2) ECHR and of the proportionality of deporting the Appellant under Article 8(2) and failed to conduct a proper assessment of all relevant factors and in particular to give sufficient weight to the remarks of the sentencing judge; the fact that the appellant has not been convicted of a serious offence of violence since April 2003; and the delay of the respondent in deporting the appellant.
The Supreme Court unanimously dismisses Mr Makhlouf’s appeal.
