Anthology of Black Humor

The Anthology of Black Humor (in French Anthologie de l'humour noir) is an anthology of 45 writers edited by André Breton. It was first published in 1940 in Paris by Éditions du Sagittaire and its distribution was immediately banned by the Vichy government. It was reprinted in 1947 after Breton's return from exile, with a few additions. In 1966, Breton, "having resisted the temptation to add more names", published the book again and called this edition "the definitive".

The anthology not only introduced some until then almost unknown or forgotten writers, it also coined the term "black humor" (as Breton said, until then the term had meant nothing, unless someone imagined jokes about black people ). The term became globally used since then. The choice of authors was done entirely by Breton and according to his taste which he explains in the Foreword (called The Lightning Rod, a term suggested by Lichtenberg), a work of great depth (Breton was the main theoretician of the Surrealist movement) that starts with contemplating Rimbaud´s words "Emanations, explosions." from Rimbaud's last poem The barrack-room of night : Dream. The authors, each introduced by a preface by Breton and represented by a few pages from their writings, are sorted chronologically. The book is still in print. It was translated into several languages; into English by Mark Polizzotti in 1997.

Black comedy

A black comedy (or dark comedy) is a comic work that employs morbid humor, which, in its simplest form, is humor that makes light of subject matter usually considered taboo. Black humor corresponds to the earlier concept of gallows humor. Black comedy is often controversial due to its subject matter.

History and etymology

Origin of the term

The term black humor (from the French humour noir) was coined by the surrealist theorist André Breton in 1935 to label a sub-genre of comedy and satire in which laughter arises from cynicism and skepticism, often relying on topics such as death.

Breton coined the term for his book Anthology of Black Humor (Anthologie de l'humour noir), in which he credited Jonathan Swift as the originator of black humor and gallows humor, and included excerpts from 45 other writers. Breton included both examples in which the wit arises from a victim with which the audience empathizes, as is more typical in the tradition of gallows humor, and examples in which the comedy is used to mock the victim. This victim's suffering is trivialized, which leads to sympathizing with the victimizer, as is the case with Sade. Black humor is related to that of the grotesque genre.

Mad Max

Mad Max is a 1979 Australian dystopian action film directed by George Miller, produced by Byron Kennedy, and starring Mel Gibson. James McCausland and Miller wrote the screenplay from a story by Miller and Kennedy.

The film earned $100 million worldwide in gross revenue. It held the Guinness record for most profitable film from 1980-1999 and has been credited for further opening up the global market to Australian New Wave films. The film became the first in a series, spawning the sequels The Road Warrior (1981), Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and Fury Road (2015).

Plot

A berserk motorcycle gang member named Crawford "Nightrider" Montazano (Vincent Gil), having killed a rookie officer of an Australian highway patrol called the Main Force Patrol (MFP) while escaping from police custody, is attempting to outrun the other MFP officers in a stolen Pursuit Special. Though he manages to elude his initial pursuers, the MFP's top pursuit-man, Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson), then engages the less-skilled Nightrider in a high-speed chase. During a sudden game of "chicken", the Nightrider breaks off first, his nerve gone in the confrontation with Max; Nightrider is unable to recover his wits, which leads to his death in a fiery crash.

Already renewed for an eighth season, series creator Robert Kirkman recently revealed that AMC themselves didn’t even know how the show would end and we discussed his comments here on Nightmares. Now, showrunner Scott M. Gimple has added fuel to a different fire, telling ComicBook.com that a feature film would probably happen eventually. Last week I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon in honor of the Blu-ray release of Don’t Breathe and we thought it would be fun to share some other details of another much-anticipated horror title: the Sam Raimi produced feature film adaptation of the hit video game The Last of Us had entered development hell and “there hasn’t been any work done on it in over a year and a half.” Now for some completely original horror offerings, from Darren Lynn Bousman, director of Saw 2-4, Repo The Genetic Opera and The Devil’s Carnival comes Abattoir, written by 12 Monkeys scribe Chris Monfette. Abbattoir stars Jessica Lowndes and Lin Shaye and tells the story of “a mysterious man who has been buying houses where tragedies have occurred. Set in a world where it always feels like night, even in daylight hours, real estate reporter Julia Talben’s life is turned upside down when her family is brutally murdered. What’s In The Box?!: In an interview with Crave Online and Future Schmoedown Champion William Bibbiani, M. Night Shyamalan gave an update on what fans can expect from his Tales From the Crypt series coming next year to TNT. Shyamalan did confirm that the series would pull directly from the comics and that fans can expect that dark, un-PC sense of humor will be out in full force. Channel Zero: Candle Cove came to a close last Tuesday night and with it came the first teaser of the follow up season Channel Zero: No-End House. Deadline describes the sophomore season as, “a six-episode stand-alone anthology series, inspired by Brian Russell’s Creepypasta, features Margot Sleator (played by Amy Forsyth), a young woman who visits the No-End House, a bizarre house of horrors that consists of a series of increasingly disturbing rooms. American Horror Story: Roanoke came to a close last week and with that came a little piece of viral marketing, possibly for the already-greenlit seventh season of Ryan Murphy’s anthology horror show. A quick video of ocean waves crashing with the words “Sweet Dreams” over them and the caption “The monsters are all gone” below, intercut with images of the weird wooden dolls from Roanoke, that quickly returned to ocean waves appeared online. They begin with Black Eye No. 3, an anthology edited by Ryan Standfest, the publisher of Rotland Press. This is a first for The Comics Alternative in a couple of different ways. It is the first time the Two Guys are reviewing a Rotland Press title, but more significantly, this is the first time they have discussed a crowd-funded book before the campaign's completion. And listeners are strongly encouraged to back this project on Indiegogo. Calling itself "the anthology of humor and despair," Black Eye is a series devoted to short, offbeat comic stories, illustrations, and prose pieces, although in the current (and final) volume there is a noticeable absence of the latter. Both Derek and Paul recognize several of the contributors in this anthology -- including Joan Cornellà, Martin Rowson, Eric Haven, David Lynch, Julia Gfrörer, Onsmith, and Alejandro Jodorowsky -- but much of the joy in this volume comes from discovering the work of newer creators. And there is a lot of talent here! Next, the guys check out a more conventional work, Matt Sheean and Malachi Ward's Ancestor (Image Comics). Although "conventional" might be a stretch here. Originally serialized in the anthology Island, this is a futuristic, or perhaps an alternate-world, narrative exploring our relationship with networked technologies and the potential consequences of complete creative freedom. As the guys point out, the story takes an unexpected turn in the final chapter, ultimately walking a fine line between paradise and dystopia. Paul and Derek wrap up this week's show with a look at the latest in Youth in Decline's quarterly monograph series, Frontier. This thirteenth issue showcases the work of Richie Pope and is titled "Fatherson." As the guys point out, it's a poignant and idiosyncratic meditation on fatherhood, specifically African American fatherhood. In fact, Derek and Paul discuss the racial specificity of the text, while at the same time observing that the story is not bound by ethnic contexts. Pope is primarily known as an illustrator -- his work has appeared in the The New York Times, The Atlantic, Scientific American, and The New Yorker, among other titles -- but this issue of Frontier aptly demonstrates his abilities in sequential storytelling.
