A curoius Minke whale is about a great sightings that AIMM Portugal team did last week around the South coast of Portugal.
The Minke Whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) is the smallest member of the rorquals, and the second smallest species of baleen whale. The species is currently considered ‘Least Concern’ (global assessment 2018) by International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
These magnificent animals can be identified by a number of behavioural and physical attributes, most notably the white spots on their pectoral fins, which can be seen through the water.
Initially, the species were not targeted by the whaling industry due to their small size and low oil and meat yield. However, at the turn of the 20th century they began to be exploited by whalers due to declining numbers of other, preferred species. In countries that have commercial whaling operations, Minke whales are now considered one of the main target species.
On the 1st of July 2019 Japan resumed commercial whaling operations, after left the International Whaling Commission (IWC), with a catch quota of 187 Bryde’s Whales, 25 Sei Whales, and 52 Minke Whales. Figures from Japanese ‘scientific’ whaling expeditions to Antarctica between 2017 and 2018 showed that 122 of the 181 female Minke Whales killed were pregnant.
