The Sweetest Music This Side Of Heaven
Lombardo's orchestra played at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City from 1929 to 1959, and their New Year's Eve broadcasts (which continued with Lombardo until 1976 at the Waldorf Astoria) were a major part of New Year's celebrations across North America. Even after Lombardo's death, the band's New Year's specials continued for two more years on CBS.

Boo Hoo - Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians
Boo Hoo - Carmen Lombardo, Cliff Grass and Fred Higman sing Boo Hoo. This song was one of their greatest hits and was one of their greatest hits and was written by Carmen. Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians were one of the most successful big bands of all time. It was very much a family outfit with three brothers in the band. Also, from 1941 til the late 1940's a sister was the lead vocalist. The band was formed in Canada in 1921 and was still going strong 50 years later. The band introduced more than 300 songs many of which became hits. A lot of the songs were written by Carmen Lombardo.

Guy Lombardo Tribute Enjoy Yourself
Still Enjoyable at 60 - "Enjoy Yourself" - The most popular version of the song, recorded by Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians, was made on November 27 (some sources give November 28), 1949. Vocals by Kenny Gardner & The Lombardo Trio vocals The recording was released by Decca Records as catalog number 24825. The record first reached the Billboard charts on January 13, 1950 and lasted 19 weeks on the chart, peaking at #10. Contemporary versions have been recorded by Amber, The Specials, The English Beat, The Busters, Todd Snider, and Jodie Holland. However, Guy Lombardo's version is as young and fun as it can be, mostly because of the lyrics. I remember as a young boy seeing Guy Lombardo on TV at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City for New Year's Eve. They would always play this song and it was really appropriate for the festivity. Great dance number too.

New Years Eve - 1957
Here is an old kinescope from over 50 years ago!! For 100 years, the slow drop of a lighted glass ball on New Year's Eve from atop One Times Square in New York City has become an American tradition. A huge crowd gathers every year to welcome in the New Year. Beginning in 1956, Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians entertained the US on New Year's Eve with a combination of music and the live "ball drop" at Midnight. Guy continued this tradition until his death in 1977. His band still played on at CBS Television on New Years for an additional 2 years. (Dick Clark's Rockin New Years Eve began in 1972 on ABC and still broadcasts annually.) This broadcast began right after the 15-minute news and ran for an hour. Guy plays the music and newsman Robert Trout announces the beginning of the New Year. If you look closely, you'll see acerbic television personality Henry Morgan in the crowd. TV was very primitive 50 years ago. Harsh lighting, a cheap office clock and a World War II searchlight scans the crowd below. I hope you'll enjoy ringing in the New Year - 1958! Guy Lombardo - LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME (1929)
"Love Me or Leave Me" Music by Walter Donaldson Words by Gus Kahn Performed by Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians Vocal by Carmen Lombardo Recorded March 20, 1929, New York This song was introduced in the Broadway play, "Whoopee!," which opened in December 1928. Ruth Etting's performance of the song was so popular that she was also given the song to sing in the play "Simple Simon," which opened in February 1930. "Love Me or Leave Me" was also a 1955 biographical film roughly based on the life of Ruth Etting, a singer who rose from dancer to movie star. It stars Doris Day as Etting, James Cagney as Martin "Moe the Gimp" Snyder. Although Canada's premiere dance band, the Royal Canadians, are most closely associated with Guy Lombardo, it was in fact his younger brother Carmen who was the true driving force behind the music group. Born in London, Ontario in 1903, the Lombardo brothers made their first debut together at a church function in 1914, starting what would end up to be a 55-year collaboration. Both Carmen and Guy began taking music lessons at the same time, with Guy on violin and Carmen on flute. Over the years, Carmen would switch to saxophone while Guy would just pick up a conductor's baton. The Royal Canadians formed in 1916, with Carmen as singer, saxophone player and composer. Their first prominent performance occurred at a dance pavilion in Grand Bend, Ontario in 1919. In 1923, The Royal Canadians moved to Cleveland, Ohio and quickly obtained a permanent gig ...

Guy Lombardo - Auld Lang Syne (1953)
"Auld Lang Syne" is a Scots poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song. It is well known in many countries, especially (but far from exclusively) in the English-speaking world; its traditional use being to celebrate the start of the New Year at the stroke of midnight. By extension, it is also sung at funerals, graduations, and as a farewell or ending to other occasions. The international Boy Scout youth movement, in many countries, uses it as a close to jamborees and other functions. The song's Scots title may be translated into English literally as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long long ago", "days gone by" or "old times". Consequently "For auld lang syne", as it appears in the first line of the chorus, is loosely translated as "for (the sake of) old times". The song begins by posing a rhetorical question as to whether it is right that old times be forgotten, and is generally interpreted as a call to remember long-standing friendships. Most common use of the song involves only the first verse and the chorus. The last lines of both of these are often sung with the extra words "For the sake of" or "And days of", rather than Burns' simpler lines. This allows one note for each word, rather than the slight melisma required to fit Burns' original words to the melody.

Bell Bottom Trousers - Guy Lombardo
The recording by Guy Lombardo's orchestra was recorded on April 20, 1945, and it was released by Decca Records as catalog number 18683, with the flip side "Oh, Brother!". It first reached the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart on June 14, 1945 and lasted 10 weeks on the chart, peaking at #6. Once there was a little girl who lived next to me And she loved a sailor boy, he was only three Now he's on a battleship in his sailor suit Just a great big sailor but she thinks he's very cute (With his bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue She loves her sailor and he loves her too) When her sailor boy's away on the ocean blue Soldier boys all flirt with her but to him she's true Though they smile and tip their caps and they wink their eyes She just smiles and shakes her head, then she softly sighs (Oh, bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue She loves her sailor and he loves her too) When her sailor went to sea to see what he could see She saw that he ate spinach, now he's big as he can be When he's home they stroll along, they don't give a hoot She won't let go of his hand, even to salute If her sailor she can't find on the bounding main She is hopeful he will soon come home safe again So they can get married and raise a family Dress up all their kiddies in sailor's dungarees (Oh, bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue She loves her sailor and he loves her too) Harts1413Productions does not own any of the photos presented in this video.
