This was the first consumer scrambling system. It began testing in 1985 on HBO satellite transponders on Satcom 3R and Galaxy 1 and entered full use in January 1986 by HBO, and within two years was used by a majority of major cable television programmers. However, lapses in its security enabled some cable pirates to modify the descrambler to receive free programming. Beginning in 1991, programmers began to phase out the VCII system in favor of the highly secure Videocipher II Plus (RS) system. The system was fully phased out in 1993

Shaun Kenny - VideoCipher II Bible (New Testament)
Old school 80's satellite TV hacking. Before the days of Pirate Bay and illegal video downloads, there was Satellite TV piracy. Shaun Kenny was one of the biggest voices in this 1980's hacking scene. This video was one of the first he produced and sold via his Greensheet channel (which only aired once a week) in the late 80's. Aimed towards satellite TV dealers, the video was a follow up to the earlier VideoCipher Bible Old Testament. The video shows off the newer updated hacking wares targeted at the newer VideoCipher II units that came out after Old Testament was created. Especially fascinating are the scenes of the technicians removing the epoxy that had been manufactured onto the circuit boards in an effort to thwart the ongoing piracy!
