The Journal Gazette is the morning newspaper in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It publishes seven days a week, and with several outlying bureaus, contends for circulation and advertising in a 15-county area. The Journal Gazette is independent, but it was aligned with the Democratic party until 1973. One of its longtime partners was Democratic Governor Paul V. McNutt, who obtained his interest in the newspaper while Indiana governor.
The Journal Gazette traces its origins to 1863, to the foundation of The Fort Wayne Gazette. In 1899, The Fort Wayne Gazette merged with The Journal. The Journal Gazette has always been a privately owned newspaper, and the family of the current publisher has controlled the paper since 1930. Publisher Richard Inskeep joined the newspaper in 1949; his family bought the newspaper in 1930. The paper was previously published by William Kunkle, who established WKJG (Will Kunkle - Journal Gazette) broadcasting stations. Kunkle died in 1953 while returning to the newspaper from the television station.

Fort Wayne is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the seat of Allen County. Located in northeastern Indiana, the city is 18 miles (29 km) west of the Ohio border and 50 miles (80 km) south of the Michigan border. With an estimated population of 258,522 in 2014, Fort Wayne is the 77th most populous city in the United States and the second largest in Indiana, after Indianapolis. It is the principal city of the Fort Wayne metropolitan area, consisting of Allen, Wells, and Whitley counties, a combined population of 419,453 as of 2011. In addition to the three core counties, the combined statistical area (CSA) includes Adams, DeKalb, Huntington, Noble, and Steuben counties, with an estimated population of 615,077.
Under the direction of American Revolutionary War statesman Anthony Wayne, the United States Army built Fort Wayne last in a series of forts near the Miami tribe village of Kekionga in 1794. Named in Wayne's honor, the European-American settlement developed at the confluence of the St. Joseph River, St. Marys River, and Maumee River as a trading post for pioneers. The village was platted in 1823 and underwent tremendous growth after completion of the Wabash and Erie Canal and advent of the railroad. Once a booming manufacturing town located in what became known as the Rust Belt, Fort Wayne's economy in the 21st century is based upon distribution, transportation and logistics, healthcare, professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, and financial services. The city is a center for the defense industry which employs thousands.
A gazette is an official journal, a newspaper of record, or simply a newspaper.
In English- and French-speaking countries, newspaper publishers have applied the name Gazette since the 17th century; today, numerous weekly and daily newspapers bear the name The Gazette.
Gazette is a loanword from the French language; in turn, the French word is a 16th-century permutation of the Italian gazzetta, which is the name of a particular Venetian coin. Gazzetta became an epithet for newspaper during the early and middle 16th century, when the first Venetian newspapers cost one gazzetta. (Compare with other vernacularisms from publishing lingo, such as the British penny dreadful and the American dime novel.) This loanword, with its various corruptions, persists in numerous modern languages.
In England, with the 1665 founding of The Oxford Gazette (which became the London Gazette), the word gazette came to indicate a public journal of the government; today, such a journal is sometimes called a government gazette. For some governments, publishing information in a gazette was or is a legal necessity by which official documents came into force and entered the public domain. Such is the case for documents published in The Gazette of India and in the Royal Thai Government Gazette (est. 1858).
A journal (through French from Latin diurnalis, daily) has several related meanings:
The word "journalist", for one whose business is writing for the public press and nowadays also other media, has been in use since the end of the 17th century.
A public journal is a record of day-by-day events in a parliament or congress. It is also called minutes or records.
The term "journal" is also used in business:
