South Africa
South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.

The Times
The Times is a British daily national newspaper based in London. It began in 1785 under the title The Daily Universal Register and became The Times on 1 January 1788. The Times and its sister paper The Sunday Times (founded in 1821) are published by Times Newspapers, since 1981 a subsidiary of News UK, itself wholly owned by the News Corp group headed by Rupert Murdoch. The Times and The Sunday Times do not share editorial staff, were founded independently and have only had common ownership since 1967.
In 1959, historian of journalism Allan Nevins analysed the importance of The Times in shaping the views of events of London's elite:
The Times is the first newspaper to have borne that name, lending it to numerous other papers around the world, including The Times of India (founded in 1838), The Straits Times (Singapore) (1845), The New York Times (1851), The Irish Times (1859), Le Temps (France) (1861-1942), the Cape Times (South Africa) (1872), the Los Angeles Times (1881), The Seattle Times (1891), The Manila Times (1898), The Daily Times (Malawi) (1900), El Tiempo (Colombia) (1911), The Canberra Times (1926), and The Times (Malta) (1935). In these countries, the newspaper is often referred to as The London Times or The Times of London.

Nelson Mandela
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (/mænˈdɛlə/; born Rolihlahla Mandela (Xhosa pronunciation: [xoˈliːɬaɬa manˈdeːla]); 18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black chief executive, and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997. Internationally, Mandela was Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999.
A Xhosa born to the Thembu royal family, Mandela attended Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand, where he studied law. Living in Johannesburg, he became involved in anti-colonial politics, joining the ANC and becoming a founding member of its Youth League. After the Afrikaner minority government of the National Party established apartheid – a system of racial segregation that privileged whites – in 1948, he rose to prominence in the ANC's 1952 anti-apartheid Defiance Campaign, was appointed superintendent of the organisation's Transvaal chapter and presided over the 1955 Congress of the People. Working as a lawyer, he was repeatedly arrested for seditious activities and, with the ANC leadership, was unsuccessfully prosecuted in the Treason Trial from 1956 to 1961. Influenced by Marxism, he secretly joined the South African Communist Party (SACP). Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the SACP he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1961, leading a sabotage campaign against the government. In 1962, he was arrested, convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the state, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial.

South Africa, a land of wonder and excitement; a place where you can walk amongst lions or ride a top great elephants – it truly is a land of adventure! Although there are endless activities that you can partake in, before embarking on a journey to this beautiful country, there are a few things to know to prepare you for the trip. Here are my top 5 tips on what to do in South Africa!
1) BE SAFE! Do not walk around at night. The crime rate in Cape Town is actually quite high so avoid putting yourself in compromising situations. In addition, if you’re a woman, this is incredibly important because the sexual assault and rape rates are also high so keep that in mind. Be safe.
2) GO ON A SAFARI! Do not leave South Africa without going on some kind of game drive/safari where you’ll get the chance to see some of the world’s most beautiful animals. It can even be a day safari, you don’t have to be made of money in order to participate. It is a truly enriching experience!
3) SEE ROBIN ISLAND! I did not do this but from what I understand it is a moving experience. Or you can go SHARK CAGE DIVING, like me! It was a hard choice to make but I couldn’t pass up the chance to face one of my biggest fears: THE GREAT WHITE! Both are wonderful experiences.
4) DO SOMETHING ADVENTUROUS, like jumping off a bridge. Don’t just jump; please have a bungee cord attached! And or more importantly, South Africa gives you a number of opportunities to face your fears. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and see what you’re really made of!
5) $$$$$ South Africa can be expensive. On this journey through Semester At Sea this is the port that I spent the most money, however I also did the most activities. Personally I like to spend money on experiences so it wasn’t a big deal for me and I’d do it all over again.

Anyone who has seen it only in pictures or film would like to see it in its reality and anyone who has been there would like to return. Sol Kesner the young bookkeeper working in the catering industry opened his first hotel in 1964. His business empire became bigger and bigger by selling and buying shares, he was able to make his dream come true by 1980 which has become a dream of ours as well. The exotic world of Sun City has tropical forest and among the trees, orchids bloom. The scent is intoxicating, the colors are damped by the light coming through the leaves among the branches, monkeys and parrots with colorful feathers squeal. In the lakes flamingo's can be seen and water lilies bloom. A flight of exotic birds enjoy the jungle. On the grass of parks delicate peacocks sweep. Realistic statues of the animals of Africa ornament the streets, bridges, corridors and terraces. Friendly zebras, elephants, funny monkeys and more lions watch us everywhere. In the sheltered sea bay with its white sand, you can get a real bath in the waves. It's a world of tales where everything got to be found in unspoiled nature but without its dangers. In this jungle there are no pythons or tigers leveling at us. In the rivers there are no crocodiles and even mosquitoes are exterminated regularly. The charm of Sun City resides in a fact that we get concentrated African experiences well not only our safety and comfort are taking cared off but also our entertainment. Here, it's impossible to be bored. In the building of a five star hotel cascades, there's a casino and a theatre hall for thousands of people which also cater for our entertaining.

Bo-Kaap. This neighbourhood, located on a hill south-west of downtown, is the area historically inhabited by mainly Muslim descendants of slaves from South-East Asia (hence an older term for the area - 'Malay Quarter'. It's a common location for film shoots, as there are some very colourful buildings, quaint streets, mosques. views over Cape Town and some great food sold on the side of the street. It's well worth wandering around for an hour or so, as well as visiting the Bo-Kaap Museum (a view of a prosperous Muslim family from the 19th Century). Atlas Trading is and old fashioned shop where you can buy spices for any dish. Ask the proprieter to mix you the necessary spice for the meal you intend making. Approximately 1km from the Bo-Kaap, is the Noon Gun which is fired every day at noon - from Monday to Saturday. You can go and view the short ceremony that takes place before the actual shooting as well as the shooting itself.
The Castle of Good Hope, The Castle of Good Hope is South Africa's oldest surviving building. It was built between 1666 and 1679. It is popularly called 'The Castle' by locals. It has extensive displays of historical military paraphernalia, a history of the castle, an art collection and the William Fehr Collection (including old Cape Dutch furniture).You can eat and buy wine inside the Castle at the restaurant or café. Tours are offered Monday through Saturday at 11:00AM, 12:00PM, and 2:00PM. Horse and carriage rides are offered daily at 10:30 AM, 12:45PM and 2:45PM. Booking is necessary. R28 entrance fee.

View the hugely diverse and beautiful plants and flowers of the Cape flora in one of the most stunning botanical gardens in the world. Plants from all of the regions of South Africa are on display, including rare succulents from the Richtersveld, a giant baobab tree, and interesting medicinal plants. Numerous paths wander through the grounds situated on the back side of Table Mountain. Several restaurants, a gift shop and indigenous nursery are also available. At various times of the year concerts are performed in the open air amphitheatre. Art is frequently on display, including large Shona stone sculptures from Zimbabwe. The gardens are also home to the National Biodiversity Institute. What makes the garden so special, is that every season gives you something new to see - new flowers, different birds, etc. During the summer months, sunset concerts feature excellent local and international music acts in diverse genres. Get there early to get a good spot on the grass amphitheatre. Bring a picnic, and enjoy the sounds of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, local rock bands, and popular artists like Freshlyground and Goldfish. R40.
Robben Island, ☎ +27 (0)21 413-4200, Robben Island is located just off the coast from Cape Town, this was the location used during the apartheid days to hold political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela and the late Walter Sisulu. The tour consists of a guided bus tour around the island, before meeting a former political prisoner for a tour of the prison area. The island itself is quite scenic, with African penguins usually seen on the tour. The bus tour stops to allow you to take in the view, and buy a snack. Tours run several times per day, seven days a week from the Nelson Mandela Gateway near the clock tower at the V&A; Waterfront. Tickets can be purchased online or by phone. There are three trips a day at 9:00, 11:00, and 13:00. The tour takes 3.5 hours including the ferry ride to and from the island. R250.
Rhodes Memorial, The memorial is situated in recognition of Cecil John Rhodes. It's built in his favorite spot on the lower slopes of Devil's Peak. Rhodes's own wooden bench is still located below the memorial. The memorial is part of the Table Mountain National Park which is a great spot for picnicking. The memorial is also a start for the hiking along Devil's Peak. Rhodes Memorial and the surrounding bike and hiking trails have become a very popular spot for muggers in recent months. If you just have to explore the nature in this area as it is very beautiful, make sure you are never alone and never carry valuables with you.

During the days of apartheid, the Muizenberg beach was off limits to blacks. They could only go to beaches abandoned by the whites : beaches that were too dangerous, or shark-infested… After apartheid, a white man decided to initiate poor black kids in surfing, to get them off drugs. One pupil even became world champion, to the delight of the whole community. Social rifts still exist, however. The Camps Bay beach is for the wealthiest, obviously mostly white, whereas the blacks tend to go to the Muizenberg Beach. In the evening, however, they all frequent the bars, restaurants and clubs along the Camp Bay promenade. As violence is still prevalent in South African society, the security measures are particularly tight here, to protect local citizens and visitors alike…

During the days of apartheid, the Muizenberg beach was off limits to blacks. They could only go to beaches abandoned by the whites : beaches that were too dangerous, or shark-infested… After apartheid, a white man decided to initiate poor black kids in surfing, to get them off drugs. One pupil even became world champion, to the delight of the whole community. Social rifts still exist, however. The Camps Bay beach is for the wealthiest, obviously mostly white, whereas the blacks tend to go to the Muizenberg Beach. In the evening, however, they all frequent the bars, restaurants and clubs along the Camp Bay promenade. As violence is still prevalent in South African society, the security measures are particularly tight here, to protect local citizens and visitors alike…

Dr Kate Orkin is the Peter J Braam Junior Research Fellow in Global Wellbeing at Merton College and the Department of Economics, University of Oxford. She works on the drivers of voter turnout in South Africa and Kenya, and more broadly on how information and behaviour change interventions can complement existing social protection and labour markets programmes in South Africa, Kenya and Ethiopia.

As we made our way from Johannesburg to Cape Town we enjoyed trying as many different kinds of South African cuisine as possible. From Braai to Biltong we sampled a lot of new things for the first time. Aside from possibly Argentina, I can't think of a country that does better barbecue and wine. However, I learned my lesson that barbecue is merely a sauce and grilled meat to perfection is what you can Braai. Come join us as we eat and drink our way around South Africa.

The Springboks, who led 13-10 at half-time, had to withstand several late Irish surges to win and clinch a series in which only six points separated the sides in each international.
Ireland had a 21-phase attack repulsed with four minutes left and another attack featuring equally good ball retention ended with the visitors being penalised and the final whistle blowing.
South Africa fly-half Elton Jantjies, given two penalty opportunities inside the opening 10 minutes, succeeded with the first but fluffed the second.

The home team were reduced to 14 men on 11 minutes when full-backs Willie le Roux and Tiernan O'Halloran collided jumping for the ball and the Springbok was yellow-carded.
Ireland used the numerical advantage to score the first try of the game on 16 minutes as patient, multi-phase pressure ended with centre Luke Marshall scoring his first Test try.
Fly-half Paddy Jackson converted, but missed a close-range penalty soon after to the relief of the under-pressure South Africans.
Given another penalty chance after Le Roux returned from the sin-bin, Jackson made no mistake and Ireland were 10-3 ahead.
A Jantjies penalty trimmed the deficit to four points eight minutes from half-time and a moment of magic from the fly-half nudged his side ahead on the stroke of half-time.
The playmaker lofted a perfectly weighted kick from the centre of the pitch into the corner and left winger JP Pietersen caught the ball and raced over.

Jantjies converted and South Africa were 13-10 up as the teams ran off the field at half-time after an even opening 40 minutes apart from the scrums, where the Irish struggled.
A leap by scrum-half Faf de Klerk, one of the shortest players on the pitch, to make a one-hand intercept prevented a near-certain try as Ireland applied early second-half pressure.
Right winger Ruan Combrinck, making his first start for the Springboks, succeeded with a penalty kick from a few metres inside his half to stretch the lead to 16-10 on the hour mark.
Another successful penalty, this time from much closer to the posts by Jantjies, put nine points between the teams, but Ireland - strengthened by their bench - hit back immediately through Jackson's penalty and they began to believe they could make history.
Sean Cronin's fresh legs took him deep into South African territory, but a seemingly endless series of phases came to nothing when Rhys Ruddock went off his feet.
Still, Ireland came and brilliant foot-work from Olding took them close and they battered at the line repeatedly in a dramatic final phase. Finally, the ball reached Earls who had Healy outside him, but De Klerk rushed up and hit him
hard. In piled the Springboks and the winger held on.
