Hercules and the Princess of Troy (1965) Gordon Scott, Paul Stevens, Mart Hulswit SWORD-AND-SANDAL
The mighty Hercules battles a sea monster to save the legendary city of Troy. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059262/ Physical Education major Gordon Weschkul left the University of Oregon after one term. He became an infantry drill instructor (rifle, pistol and bayonet; judo and hand-to-hand combat; close order drill), then a military policeman. After his honorable discharge in 1947, he was a fireman, cowboy, and farm machinery salesman. In 1953, a Las Vegas lifeguard, he was spotted by a pair of Hollywood agents who introduced him and his 19-inch biceps to Sol Lesser, who had already conducted 200 tests in search of a new Tarzan. The producer gave him a seven-year contract and a new last name. His three MGM Tarzans were run-of-the mill, but his two for Sy Weintraub, through Paramount, marked a rebirth of the Tarzan character. The movies were well received. Weintraub was looking for a leaner, more thoughtful Tarzan so Scott moved on to a number of Italian strong-man spectaculars and spaghetti westerns, becoming a sensation in Europe.- published: 31 Oct 2013

Gladiator of Rome (1962) Gordon Scott, Wandisa Guida, Roberto Risso SWORD-AND-SANDAL
A warrior protecting a slave girl, who is really a princess, winds up as a gladiator in the Roman arenas. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056026/ American actor and body-builder whose greatest claim to fame was his role as the movies' eleventh (and some say best) Tarzan. Scott was born Gordon Merrill Werschkul in Portland, Oregon, one of nine children of advertising man Stanley Werschkul and his wife Alice. He grew up in Oregon, where he discovered body-building, which he took up in order, he said, to attract women. He attended the University of Oregon for one semester. Drafted into the United States Army in 1944, he served as a military policeman and drill instructor and was honorably discharged in 1947. For the next six or seven years, he worked at various jobs, mostly delivering soda pop for the beverage company owned by his brother Rafield. An offer of a job as a lifeguard at the Las Vegas Sahara Hotel led him to leave his delivery job. Soon thereafter, a Hollywood talent scout took note of him and signed him to a contract with Sol Lesser, producer of the Tarzan movies. His handsome features, muscular physique, and imposing height made him an excellent choice to replace Lex Barker as Tarzan, and he won out over 200 candidates for the role. It was Lesser who changed his name from Werschkul to Scott. Scott's Tarzan films ranged from rather cheap re-edited television pilots to larger scale epics. Two of them, Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959) and Tarzan the Magnificent (1960) are generally considered to be among the very best Tarzan films ever made. Scott's (and his writers') particular gifts to the series included returning Tarzan to his former status as a literate, well-spoken character. Following his departure from the Tarzan films, he moved to Italy and became a popular star of what were known as "sword and sandal" epics, featuring handsome body-builders as various characters from Greek and Roman myth. Scott was a friend of Hercules star Steve Reeves, and collaborated with him as Remus to Reeves's Romulus in Duel of the Titans (1961). Scott also played such mythic heroes as Goliath, Zorro, and Buffalo Bill in various low-budget productions during the mid-1960s. His final film appearance, apparently, was in The Tramplers (1965), aka "The Tramplers," filmed in 1966, released in the U. S. in 1968. Scott was married apparently three times, including once to his Tarzan co-star, actress Vera Miles, from 1954 to 1959. He had one child (with Miles) and possibly several more children. For the last two decades of his life, he was a popular guest at film conventions and autograph shows. His manner of making a living the last forty years of his life is unclear, for aside from autograph shows and selling occasional souvenir knives, he does not seem to have been employed. He spent much of his final years living with fans who remembered him from his Tarzan days. Scott died on April 30, 2007, in Baltimore, Maryland at Johns Hopkins Hospital of lingering complications from multiple heart surgeries earlier in the year. Estranged from his family, he was survived by two sisters and a brother, none of whom had seen him in years.- published: 31 Oct 2013

1960 GORDON SCOTT TARZAN TRAILER
Trailer for the superb 1960 Tarzan adventure, TARZAN, THE MAGNIFICENT, starring Gordon Scott, Jock Mahoney, John Carradine, Betta St. John and Lionel Jeffries. This film marked Gordon Scott's final appearance as the ape-man. Jock Mahoney, who played the villainous "Coy Banton" in this film, would assume the role for the next film, TARZAN GOES TO INDIA (1962). Despite fan protesst, it was also the first "sound" Tarzan adventure not to include the jungle lord's famous "ape call." Subscribe to Captain Bijou's channel!! About
Tendril's longtime friend and collaborator John Black (of CypherAudio) was approached by Stash Magazine editor and STYLE FRAMES executive producer Stephen Price to create a musical framework for the show's opening titles. John recommended Tendril as a great partner to create a visual, and soon after we were meeting with Stephen to discuss.
After some initial brainstorming at the studio, our Creative Director Chris Bahry reached out to the ultra talented filmmaker, designer and musician Anthony Scott Burns. Anthony had left commercial work to pursue feature film, and to us this project and client seemed like the perfect chance for an overdue collaboration. Together we came up with the self-referential story of a person creating a pitch, and the nightmarish encounters he has with himself and five ‘Gods’ that represent aspects of his creative psyche - the 'Gods' represent flesh/blood; technology/power; rest/play; form/function; love/passion.
We figured that anyone who has engaged in a pitch or any kind of creative process under pressure will identify with aspects of the ‘Ritual’ that plays out over the course of the sequence. With pitches, we put the best of ourselves out there to be the ones selected for a project and it's a painful and exhilarating experience. It's the nerd/artist's equivalent of extreme sports. It’s not meant to be a message that pitching is bad at all; but when we really got into it, things quickly became visceral and dark. We wanted to be true to the subject and this is what came out.
It was ambitious and there was certainly interplay between life and art during the piece’s inception. We wanted it to be an epic live-action and CG combo; plus the timeline was incredibly tight with just over a month for a 3-minute short with over 95 shots and no money. To that end, we drew on every resource at our disposal, including our partners for make-up and costumes, friends and family as actors, running around town with our own kit and gear, and the amazing team of designers and artists at the studio for execution. We came up with a lot of smart and cheap solutions for getting all the shots we wanted and are excited to share it all soon in some behind the scenes materials.
After we had our footage, we enlisted Chris Murphy of Relish for editing and John got to work giving the score a deep, cinematic feel, building up slowly to the reveal of the Gods. The sound design opens with more traditional musical elements for the first two movements and then introduces a more contemporary feel in the middle that continues into the finale.
All in all, it was a dream team collaboration that resulted in a work that we we hope depicts the essence of the pitch process in 3 minutes.
Look out for lots of making-of and process soon!
