British scientist wins Nobel Prize for Stem Cell work
British scientist Sir John Gurdon, along with Shinya Yamanaka from Japan, have jointly been awarded the Nobel prize for medicine for their work on stem cell research. Their research has uncovered a way to transform adult cells to an embryonic-like stage, that could lead in the future to damaged body tissue being able to be regrown. Gurdon held a news conference in London to discuss the research he has been working on for over 50 years. "In the 1950's we really didn't know whether all your different cells had the same genes or they don't and that was the purpose of the experiments I was doing. And the outcome was that they do. So that means that in principle you should be able to derive any one kind of cell from another, because they have all got the same genes, that was I think the contribution I made at that time," he said. Gurdon also joked that at school he was told by his teachers to stop studying science. He said, "I was at a school where you did no science until the age of 15, and then I did one term of science and then the schoolmaster wrote the report, the details of which I can't quite remember, but the main gist of it was that he had heard that Gurdon was interested in doing science and that this was a completely ridiculous idea, because there was no hope whatever of my doing science and anytime spent on it would be a total waste of time, both on my part and the part of the person having to teach him. So that completely terminated my science at school." Gurdon ...

2012 Nobel Laureate in Medicine Sir John B Gurdon "The egg and the nucleus: a battle for supremacy" - Nobel Lectures at Uppsala University 13 December 2012. For many years it has been a tradition to invite the new Nobel Prize laureates to Uppsala University in connection with the Nobel Prize festivities in Stockholm. The program for the visit includes a reception with the Vice Chancellor and lunch at Uppsala Castle, but also much appreciated and well-attended open lectures by the guest laureates. www.uu.se

Nobel Prize Winning Researcher Told Becoming Scientist is 'Ridiculous'
British scientist shares the Nobel for medicine for his stem cell research and recalls being told to give up science at school. Full Story: As a young man, John B. Gurdon was told by his schoolmaster to avoid science. It was quite the blow for someone with a burgeoning interest in becoming a scientist. [John B. Gurdon, Nobel Prize Winning Scientist]: "The schoolmaster wrote the report, the main gist of it was that he had heard that Gurdon was interested in doing science and that this was a completely ridiculous idea, because there was no hope whatever of my doing science and anytime spent on it would be a total waste of time, both on my part and the part of the person having to teach him. So that completely terminated my science at school." Decades later, Gurdon heads the Gurdon Institute at Cambridge, and, as of today, is a Nobel Prize winning researcher. On Monday, both he and a Japanese scientist from Kyoto University split the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work related to cellular reprogramming. The recognition is just another point in what has become a 50 year journey for the two. The 79-year-old Briton began experimenting with cells in the 1950s and in 1962, he became the first scientist to clone an animal. In an audacious attempt, he successfully grew a healthy tadpole from an egg of the frog using the DNA of another tadpole's intestinal cell. It was the same year that Shinya Yamanaka was born. He would build on Gurdon's research, and in 2006 ...

Sir John Gurdon, Nobel Prize winner, was 'too stupid' for science at school
Sir John Gurdon, Nobel Prize winner, was 'too stupid' for science at school A British scientist whose schoolmasters told him he was too stupid to study the subject has been awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology for his pioneering work on cloning. At the age of 15, Prof Sir John Gurdon ranked last out of the 250 boys in his Eton year group at biology, and was in the bottom set in every other science subject. Sixty-four years later he has been recognised as one of the finest minds of his generation after being awarded the £750000 annual prize, which he shares with Japanese stem cell researcher Shinya Yamanaka. Speaking after learning of his award in London on Monday, Sir John revealed that his school report still sits above his desk at the Gurdon Institute in Cambridge, which is named in his honour. The master, a Mr Gaddum, was in fact a museum curator by profession who had been hired to teach the lowest-achieving pupils and was not in fact a particularly effective teacher, he explained. He said: "The main gist of it was that he had heard Gurdon was interested in doing science and that this was a completely ridiculous idea because there was no hope whatever of my doing science. "When you have problems like an experiment doesn't work, which often happens, it's nice to remind yourself that perhaps after all you are not so good at this job and the schoolmaster may have been right." After receiving the report Sir John said he switched his attention to classics and ...
