"The Square," a Swedish movie about the curator of a museum filled with grotesquely pretentious conceptual art, beat stiff competition to win the top prize, the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday (May 28).
Critics hailed the movie by writer-director Ruben Ostlund as "high-wire cinema" that veers between comedy and thriller with moments of pure surrealism, though some said it could easily have shed part of its 2 hours and 22 minutes running time.
Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, who headed the jury of nine people that included Hollywood stars Will Smith and Jessica Chastain, said the film was about "the dictatorship of being politically correct."
"BPM (Beats Per Minute)," a French movie about AIDS awareness campaigners in the 1980s, had been favorite for the award but had to settle for second place, taking the Grand Prize of the Jury.
Sofia Coppola, who was not present at the Awards, won best director for "The Beguiled," a remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood tale of sexual tension between an injured soldier in the American Civil War and the women and girls who take him in.
Nicole Kidman, who starred alongside Colin Farrell in "The Beguiled" and "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" missed out on the best actress trophy but was awarded a special prize, collecting the jury's 70th Anniversary Award.
Best actress went to Diane Kruger for her performance in German film "In the Fade," playing a woman trying to put her life back together after her husband and young son are killed in a bomb attack. It was her first role in her native German.
Joaquin Phoenix was named best actor for his portrayal of a psychologically damaged hitman in "You Were Never Really Here" by British director Scottish director Lynne Ramsay, who shared the prize for best screenplay with the writers of "The Killing of a Sacred Deer", Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou.
Other wins included the Jury Prize for "Loveless", collected by director Andrey Zvyagintsev, and the Camera d'Or for "Jeune Femme/Montparnasse Bienvenue" awarded to director Léonor Serraille

Palme d'Or
The Palme d'Or (French pronunciation: [palm(ə) dɔʁ]; English: Golden Palm) is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. It was introduced in 1955 by the organising committee. From 1939 to 1954, the highest prize was the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film. In 1964, it was replaced once again by the Grand Prix du Festival before being reintroduced in 1974.
History
In 1954, the Jury of the Festival de Cannes suggested awarding an award titled the "Grand Prix of the International Film Festival" with a new design each year from a contemporary artist. At the end of 1954, the Festival's Board of Directors invited several jewellers to submit designs for a palm, in tribute to the coat of arms of the City of Cannes. The original design by the jeweller Lucienne Lazon had the bevelled lower extremity of the stalk forming a heart, and the pedestal a sculpture in terracotta by the artist Sébastien.
In 1955, the first Palme d'Or was awarded to Delbert Mann for Marty, and it remained the highest award until 1964, when copyright issues with the Palme led the Festival to return to the Grand Prix. In 1975 the Palme d'Or was reintroduced and has since remained the symbol of the Cannes Film Festival, awarded every year to the director of the Best Feature Film of the Official Competition, and presented in a case of pure red Morocco leather lined with white suede.

A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre (e.g., film noir) or subject matter (e.g., horror film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length. Film festivals are typically annual events. Some film historians do not consider Film Festivals as official releases of film, like Jerry Beck. The best known film festivals are the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival, the latter being the largest film festival worldwide, based on attendance. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest major festival. The Melbourne International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world. A 2013 study found 3,000 active films festivals worldwide—active defined as having held an event in the previous 24 months.

Cannes Film Festival
The Cannes Festival (French: Festival de Cannes), named until 2002 as the International Film Festival (Festival international du film) and known in English as the Cannes Film Festival, is an annual film festival held in Cannes, France, which previews new films of all genres, including documentaries, from around the world. Founded in 1946, it is considered the most prestigious film festival in the world and is one of the most publicised, together with the Berlin International Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. The invitation-only festival is held annually (usually in May) at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.
The 2015 Cannes Film Festival took place between 13 and 24 May 2015. American film directors Joel Coen and Ethan Coen were the joint Presidents of the Jury. Dheepan, the film directed by French director Jacques Audiard, won the Palme d'Or.
On 1 July 2014, co-founder and former head of French pay-TV operator Canal+ Pierre Lescure took over as President of the festival. The Board of Directors also appointed Gilles Jacob as Honorary President of the festival.

These are some of the shots I supervised for the Big Fat Kill segment of Sin City, in 2005, at CafeFX. I also did animation, lighting, effects, & tracking for several shots, as well as a little compositing. There were approximately 550 'digital backlot' FX shots in The Big Fat Kill segment that were mostly rendered in Lightwave 7.5, and composited in Digital Fusion 4. The CG Dwight flying thru the air, and the car crash shot were handled in Maya. Explosions were created using Afterburn in Max. RealFlow was used for liquids. I was a fan of the first graphic novel and had thought about how to realize it as a movie since the early 90s. Rodriguez was a great client to work for as he was wide open to ideas. Best actress went to Diane Kruger for her performance in German film "In the Fade," playing a woman trying to put her life back together after her husband and young son are killed in a bomb attack. It was her first role in her native German.
Joaquin Phoenix was named best actor for his portrayal of a psychologically damaged hitman in "You Were Never Really Here" by British director Scottish director Lynne Ramsay, who shared the prize for best screenplay with the writers of "The Killing of a Sacred Deer", Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou.
Other wins included the Jury Prize for "Loveless", collected by director Andrey Zvyagintsev, and the Camera d'Or for "Jeune Femme/Montparnasse Bienvenue" awarded to director Léonor Serraille

These are some of the shots I supervised for the Big Fat Kill segment of Sin City, in 2005, at CafeFX. I also did animation, lighting, effects, & tracking for several shots, as well as a little compositing. There were approximately 550 'digital backlot' FX shots in The Big Fat Kill segment that were mostly rendered in Lightwave 7.5, and composited in Digital Fusion 4. The CG Dwight flying thru the air, and the car crash shot were handled in Maya. Explosions were created using Afterburn in Max. RealFlow was used for liquids.
I was a fan of the first graphic novel and had thought about how to realize it as a movie since the early 90s. Rodriguez was a great client to work for as he was wide open to ideas. I had the freedom to invent compositions and add my own details. I would rather have worked on the Marv story, but I knew the material well and lucked into an opportunity to contribute to a unique project.
Sin City was nominated for Palme d'Or at Cannes.

"The Square," a Swedish movie about the curator of a museum filled with grotesquely pretentious conceptual art, beat stiff competition to win the top prize, the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday (May 28).
Critics hailed the movie by writer-director Ruben Ostlund as "high-wire cinema" that veers between comedy and thriller with moments of pure surrealism, though some said it could easily have shed part of its 2 hours and 22 minutes running time.
Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, who headed the jury of nine people that included Hollywood stars Will Smith and Jessica Chastain, said the film was about "the dictatorship of being politically correct."
"BPM (Beats Per Minute)," a French movie about AIDS awareness campaigners in the 1980s, had been favorite for the award but had to settle for second place, taking the Grand Prize of the Jury.

The film tells a story with no dialogue. The surf rock-esque soundtrack was composed by Mike Curb and Nick Venet with Davie Allan and the Arrows playing "Skaterdater Rock" [2].
It was the first film on skateboarding. It was distributed theatrically, both domestically and internationally, by United Artists. It was reviewed extensively, including "Time Magazine".
The skateboarders were members of the neighborhood Imperial Skateboard Club from Torrance, California. Their names are Gary Hill, Gregg Carrol, Mike Mel, Bill McKaig, Gary Jennings, Bruce McKaig and Rick Anderson. Most of the action shots were taken in Torrance, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes Estates. These are some of the shots I supervised for the Big Fat Kill segment of Sin City, in 2005, at CafeFX. I also did animation, lighting, effects, & tracking for several shots, as well as a little compositing. There were approximately 550 'digital backlot' FX shots in The Big Fat Kill segment that were mostly rendered in Lightwave 7.5, and composited in Digital Fusion 4. The CG Dwight flying thru the air, and the car crash shot were handled in Maya. Explosions were created using Afterburn in Max. RealFlow was used for liquids.
I was a fan of the first graphic novel and had thought about how to realize it as a movie since the early 90s. Rodriguez was a great client to work for as he was wide open to ideas. I had the freedom to invent compositions and add my own details. I would rather have worked on the Marv story, but I knew the material well and lucked into an opportunity to contribute to a unique project.
Sin City was nominated for Palme d'Or at Cannes.

“The world was such a better world in paintings than in reality.” Growing up in post-war Düsseldorf, it was through paintings that German filmmaker Wim Wenders initially discovered the possibility of a different world. This would later come to define him not only as a painter, but also as a filmmaker and photographer, as he shares with us in this personal interview.
A painter at heart, Wenders initially regarded film and photography as a simple way to record his surroundings and the camera as an extension of his painting tools. What he discovered, however, was that the camera could depict something that paintings could not - time. To Wenders, each photograph is a sort of time capsule, frozen in time but with an incredible relation to its own past and future, inviting the spectator to see more than any film could ever show. His desire is for the picture to not only convey a story about itself, but also about the person who took it. “I’m looking strictly for what I can learn about us”, he emphasizes.
Common for Wenders’ approach to both film and photography, is the starting point in painting and in particular the concept of frames. He considers the frame to be the defining factor - if it is not in the frame, then it is out: “The frame is the main act.”
In the end, Wenders became a filmmaker almost without being aware of it, and the transition from painting to photography and films was complete, as he puts it: “Eventually I realized I was no longer a painter.”
Wim Wenders (born Ernst Wilhelm Wenders in 1945) is the director behind movies such as ‘Paris, Texas’, the story of a man who returns to retrieve his life after a four year absence, ‘Wings of Desire’ (‘Der Himmel über Berlin’), which features an angel who falls in love with a mortal and thus wishes to become human, ‘Faraway, So Close!’ (‘In weiter Ferne so nah’), where a group of angels again look longingly upon the life of humans, ‘Buena Vista Social Club’, which documents a group of talented aging Cuban musicians, and ‘Pina’, a tribute to the late German choreographer, Pina Bausch. He has received a multitude of international awards, including the Palme d’Or, the BAFTA and the Golden Lion. Since 1996 he has been the president of the European Film Academy in Berlin. Apart from being a highly praised filmmaker, Wenders is also an acclaimed playwright, photographer and author.
Wim Wenders was interviewed by Marc-Christoph Wagner at Kunstforeningen Gammel Strand. Most of the photographs shown in this interview are part of the exhibition: ‘Wim Wenders – Places, strange and quiet.’

Însă puțini știu că primul flash-mob de amploare din România a fost inițiat de Judith State, când peste 200 de oameni au dansat în centrul Capitalei pentru a-i aduce un omagiu lui Michael Jackson.

Binoche also holds the unique distinction of being the only female to win Best Actress honors in all three main European Film Festivals—the Palme d’Or at Cannes for Certified Copy, (2010), both the Volpi Cup and Pasinetti Award at Venice for Three Colors: Blue (1993), and Berlin’s Silver Bear for The English Patient (1996).
Some of her most prominent film roles include Chocolat with Johnny Depp (earning her second Academy Award® nomination), The Unbearable Lightness of Being alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, Wuthering Heights with Ralph Fiennes, Dan in Real Life with Steve Carell and the 2014 blockbuster Godzilla opposite Clive Owen, which raked in over $500 million worldwide at the box office. She was recently seen in Clouds of Sils Maria (2015) opposite Kristen Stewart, and can next be seen in The 33 (November 2015) with Antonio Banderas, which is based on the real events of the 2010 Chilean mining disaster.
