Sundance Entertainment Tonight 1 - David Newman Composer
1989 -- This is just a fun news program (with a review by Leonard Maltin) about my score for the silent film SUNRISE that I composed for the opening of the US Film Festival (early name for the Sundance Film Festival). This was performed with the Utah Symphony in their gorgeous hall (Abravanel Hall) in Salt Lake City. http://newmancomposer.com- published: 09 Apr 2014

Sunrise - The Kiss - David Newman Composer
Among the greater, more influential silent films ever made, Sunrise is a brilliant triumph of direction performance and design made in 1927, just when sounds was about to revolutionize the industry. It's subtitled "A Song of Two Humans" -- it's about a simple farmer that plots with another woman to murder his wife. He can't bring himself to do it and in the process they end up in the city and fail in love again. I performed this live with the Utah Symphony for the opening of the 1989 Sundance Film Festival. There are 3 excerpts, "The Kiss" which is where they fall in love again -- "The Dance" a section of their night on the town -- "Finale" the end of the movie. The Farmer thinks his wife has been drowned in a storm as they tried to come home from the city. As you can see, he was mistaken. http://newmancomposer.com/- published: 09 Apr 2014

1001 Nights - Excerpt - David Newman Composer
In 1998 I composed a score to the first in a proposed series of original films with live orchestral accompaniment with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Series was called "Filmharmonic" for obvious reasons. The film was called "1001 Nights," and was based on the legendary group of short stories. Yoshitaka Amano's illustrations were the basis for the film and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, performed it on four successive nights. The Piece has 4 Synth players each changing patches around 15 times during the piece. This excerpt is right at the end of the 1st part of the piece (I broke it into 3 Sections). http://newmancomposer.com/- published: 09 Apr 2014

Yoko and the Tooth Fairy - End - David Newman Composer
This is a small melodrama (essentially a play with music) based on an original story that I composed for the Annual Children's concert at Crossroads School (2008) where my daughter was attending at the time. This is the end of the show. The orchestra is truly incredible at Crossroads. Alex Treger is the music director (He is also the music director of the American Youth Symphony [http://www.aysymphony.org/]. The Crossroads Chamber Orchestra rehearses every Tuesday and Friday afternoon for the entire school year. My daughter Diana was lucky enough to play in that Orchestra from 8th through 12th grade. It was a wonderful experience for her. http://newmancomposer.com/- published: 09 Apr 2014

Concerto for the Winds - David Newman Composer
Concerto for the Winds - David Newman Composer
This is a piece that was commissioned by the Long Beach Symphony. I composed a single movement for each instrument (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn) that was premiered at each of the first five concerts of the season. The last concert featured the entire work, which consisted of basically the single movements as well as some movements with the entire Quintet playing together. This particular clip is a rehearsal from a performance that was done at the Spoletto Festival, USA in 2008 conducted by my good friend Emmanuel Villaume. This is the end of the final movement of the piece. There is a bit of rehearsing and the sound isn't great, but I think it's interesting. http://newmancomposer.com- published: 09 Apr 2014

News clip about the Royce Hall Concert that we did for Sundance in 1988 -- The coolest part of this is when we did the Main Title from SPARTACUS and Alex North was in the audience. When the Main Title finished there was an ovation like I have never heard and as incapacitated as he was, he stood up for a bow. Of course Royce Hall was PACKED!!!! http://newmancomposer.com/- published: 09 Apr 2014
