Diuretic action in the kidney
The narrated movie takes the viewer from the human silhouette down subsequent levels of detail finally ending on the transporter proteins which are the direct targets of most diuretic drugs. The movie is intended to show the flow processes within the kidney including such aspects as filtration, reabsorption, and excretion in the nephron. It also shows the molecular sequence of ion transport, how the diuretics inhibit the reabsorption of sodium, and the subsequent effects on other ions reated by: Steven Barbera - Business/CommunicationsSteven Barbera Class of 2007 Business/Communications STA member since 2003 Dr. King - Biomedical and Pharmaceutical SciencesDr. Roberta King Assistant Professor of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences College of Pharmacy

Diuretics good for High Blood Pressure? - News Report
Clip thanks to www.medstores.net A diuretic is often the first drug given to treat high blood pressure. Diuretics cause blood vessels to dilate. Diuretics also help the kidneys eliminate salt and water, decreasing fluid volume throughout the body and thus lowering blood pressure. Because diuretics cause potassium to be excreted in the urine, potassium supplements or a diuretic that does not cause potassium loss or that causes potassium levels to increase (a potassium-sparing diuretic) sometimes must be taken with a thiazide diuretic. Usually, potassium-sparing diuretics are not used alone because they do not control blood pressure as well as thiazide diuretics do; however, the potassium-sparing diuretic spironolactone is sometimes used alone. Diuretics are particularly useful for blacks, older people, obese people, and people with heart failure or chronic kidney failure.

Diuretics For Hypertension
www.highbloodpressurearticles.com The wide range of antihypertensives in the market is likely to confuse the patient. How do they differ from one another? What is the best one for you? The following guide will hopefully give you a better understanding of these drugs and make things easier for you. Diuretics are the earliest drugs for hypertension that have been around since 1957. Many doctors prescribe them first and over 15 million Americans use them. They lower blood pressure by increasing the rate at which sodium and water are eliminated from the body. The main advantage of diuretics is their low price. Patients don't' have to spend much while using them. The bad news is that they have a lot of side effects. "One man in three who take diuretics becomes impotent. These agents often raise blood sugar (which, however, returns to normal when you stop the drug). They elevate uric acid levels in the blood, and a high uric acid causes gout so that if you're vulnerable, you may wake up one morning with a big red, swollen, painful toe. They can upset an empty stomach (so always have your diuretic with food or milk). And then there's the matter of voiding. Diuretics are usually taken once a day, either with breakfast or at bedtime. A morning dose will keep you 'running' all day; taken at bedtime you're likely to get up every hour or so during the night to empty your bladder," said Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld of the New York Hospital - Memorial Sloan - Kettering Cancer Center in "The ...

Celery the natural detoxifier and diuretic
www.karenrothnutrition.com Holistic Nutrition Consultant, Karen Roth, MS, NC discusses the health benefits of celery. Many think of celery as something you throw into crock pots or stews to enhance flavor, or as a tool to eat dips. But you may not be aware of how healthy celery is. Celery has long been known to lower blood pressure. Because of its high potassium content and a compounds called phthalides. Its also a natural diuretic helping the body reduce excess water retention. Its a good source of Insoluble fiber. Its those long stringy strands of celery that remain unchanged as it moves the digestive track. 1.Helps with Regularity •Absorbs up to 5 times its own weight in water •Moves waste through the intestines faster •Reduces risk of colon cancer 2.Reduces appetite and Helps with Weight Loss •Soaks up water •Expands creating a sense of fullness •ONLY 19 calories per cup 3.Natural Detoxifier •Cleanses the colon •Moves toxins and impurities out Peak season is the summer month, although we in CA it grows year round. Its very simple to add to your diet. Add diced celery to tuna or chicken salads for that extra crunch. Sliced and tossed with a green salad. Or spread with hummus for a nice snack. Try using celery stalks instead of tortilla chips for guacamole. And of course, the old stand by peanut butter, or I prefer almond butter spread on a celery stalk for a snack. Spread with some cream cheese and sprinkle some capers, or cranberries or raisins. Save your self some ...

Ed's Meniere's Disease Video 6.1: Diuretics
Ed's Meniere's Disease Video 6.1: Diuretics These "Water Pills" try to reduce the endolymph fluid from the inner ear. The Cochlea's Scala Media produces the fluid similar (Higher in Potassium) to the Kidneys that exchange water and salt. Diuretics work on the Kidney's salt re-absorption. 1) Thiazides -- HCTZ or Hydroclorothiazide (Esidrix, Aquazide, Microzide) 2) Potassium Sparing -- HCTZ & Triamterene (Maxide, Dyazide, Dyrenium) 3) Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitor -- Acetazolamide (Diamox) 4) Loop / High Ceiling -- Furosemide (Lasix) & Bumetanide (Bumex) Diuretics may have some small hormonal effect on the inner ear. BUT their primary effectiveness is on the Kidneys by drawing the Sodium and hopefully some extra fluid swelling out of you body - thereby indirectly decreasing the swelling in the inner ear that causes Meniere's Symptoms. Make sure to keep your Potassium Level Up or you will have cramping and feel weak. May also have to take Magnesium to help with the Potassium absorption.
