Brian is a male given name of Irish and Breton origin,^[1] as well as a surname of Occitan origin.^[2] It is common in the English-speaking world. It is possible that the name is derived from an Old Celtic word meaning "high" or "noble".^[1] For example the element bre means "hill"; which could be transferred to mean "eminence" or "exalted one".^[2] The name is quite popular in Ireland, on account of Brian Boru, a 10th century king of Ireland. The name was also quite popular in East Anglia during the Middle Ages. This is because the name was introduced to England by Bretons following the Norman Conquest.^[1] Bretons also settled in Ireland along with the Normans in the 12th century, and 'their' name was mingled with the 'Irish' version.^[2] Also, in the north-west of England, the 'Irish' name was introduced by Scandinavian settlers from Ireland. Brian McKnight (born June 5, 1969) is an American singer-songwriter, arranger, producer, and R&B musician. He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays eight instruments including piano, guitar, bass guitar, percussion, trombone, tuba, flugelhorn and trumpet.^[1]. McKnight is perhaps most recognized for his strong falsetto range, and is widely regarded as one of the strongest talents in the adult urban contemporary R&B genre, although his recent efforts have received mixed reviews.

McKnight's work has earned him 16 Grammy Awards nominations, but currently holds the record for having won none.

Biography[link]

1969-1986: Early life and career beginnings[link]

McKnight was born in Buffalo, New York. His musical career began in childhood when he became a member of his church choir and a band leader for his high school, Sweet Home High School.^[2].

1987-1997: Mercury Records[link]

In 1987, McKnight's older brother, Claude McKnight III, and his band, Take 6, signed a record deal with Warner Brothers. This encouraged McKnight to shop his own demo tapes and by the age of 19, he'd signed his first recording deal with Mercury Records subsidiary, Wing Records.^[2] In 1992, Brian McKnight was released, and his self-titled debut peaked at fifty-eight in the Billboard 200 chart, which primarily featured the ballad (and top twenty single) "One Last Cry". It was followed by two more albums for Mercury, 1995's I Remember You and 1997's Anytime. Anytime, McKnight's final album with Mercury, sold over two million copies and was nominated for a Grammy. The video for "Anytime", directed by Darren Grant, was nominated for Best Male Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards.

In 1997, McKnight recorded "Remember the Magic" for Disney World's 25th anniversary.

1997-2003: Motown Records[link]

McKnight signed with Motown in 1998 and released the Christmas album Bethlehem. In 1999, McKnight released Back at One, his most successful album at date, which eventually went on to sell over 3 million copies.

2004-2012: Warner Brothers and Television/Radio Career[link]

In 2004, McKnight co-wrote with Australian Soul artist Guy Sebastian the song "Wait", off Sebastian's Beautiful Life album.

In October 2007, McKnight made his Broadway debut in the show Chicago.

From 2006 to 2010 he hosted a radio show, The Brian McKnight Morning Show with Pat Prescott on KTWV The Wave in Los Angeles, CA. The show was briefly simulcast on KHJZ-FM, Smooth Jazz 95.7 The Wave in Houston, TX from 6AM-9AM CST.

On January 26, 2009, McKnight hosted "The Brian McKnight Show" from 7PM-Midnight on 98.7 KISS FM in New York City.

In 2009, he appeared in the second season of Celebrity Apprentice.^[3] Each celebrity played to raise money for the charity of his or her choice; McKnight elected to play for Youthville USA.

From September 2009 to May 2010, McKnight hosted ^[4] The Brian McKnight Show, a late night talk show billed as a combination of talk and variety, aired in syndication. The show was cancelled on May 29, 2010 after one season.

On March 31, 2011 McKnight sang the National Anthem for MLB Opening Day in Cincinnati, Ohio with his sons Brian, Jr. and Niko. He had previously sung the National Anthem for the 1997 NBA All-Star Game in Cleveland, Ohio, Game 6 of the 2002 World Series in Anaheim, California, near his Los Angeles home, and the 2005 Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Detroit. McKnight has also made numerous other "National Anthem" appearances throughout his career.

On April 23, 2012 McKnight posted to youtube "If You're Ready To Learn", which has been characterized by Billboard as a "filthy jam." McKnight's vocal style draws from Stevie Wonder (particularly in his use of melisma), Michael Sembello, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, and his own brother, Take 6 co-founder Claude V. McKnight. Soul singer James Ingram also strongly influenced McKnight. His music production sensibilities, including his penchant for piano based pop ballads, method of background vocal recording and melismatic voice inflections all draw from Ingram. McKnight also has the uncanny ability to mimic the timbre and style of other singers such as Nat King Cole, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Prince.

Throughout his career, McKnight has collaborated with a variety of musicians including Mariah Carey, Sin Bandera, Mase, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Marcus Cole, Mary J. "I'm the fifth generation of Seventh Day Adventists and the youngest of four brothers. When I was still very small, we formed a gospel quartet. Our models were the great gospel groups, the Swan Silvertones and Mighty Clouds of Joy. The McKnight brothers were serious singers. The reputation went out: these boys could shout. Juan Ramón Francisco González (born June 24, 1987 in Bonao, Dominican Republic) is a Dominican professional baseball third baseman for the Atlanta Braves of Major League Baseball.

The then switch-hitting Francisco was signed as a non-drafted free agent on May 6, 2004 by Juan Peralta. He lives in Villa Altagracia, Dominican Republic.

Professional baseball[link]

Cincinnati Reds[link]

He spent his first professional season, with the Gulf Coast League Reds. He batted .280 in 182 at-bats with three home runs. He enjoyed a nine game call up at the season's end to the Billings Mustangs rookie class team, where he went 12-for-36.

Francisco spent 2007 with the single-A Dayton Dragons. He hit .268 in 534 at-bats, slugging 25 home runs and driving in 90. Juan was a Midwest League mid-season All-Star and post-season All-Star for the Dragons.

Promoted again in 2008, this time to the single-A advanced Sarasota Reds, he again spent the entire season with the same team. In 516 at-bats, he hit .277 with 23 homers and 92 RBI. Francisco earned All-Star status again, for both the mid-season and post-season in the Florida State League. In addition, he was selected to play in the 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star Futures Game. Francisco was named Reds' Minor League Hitter of the Year for 2008. Juan played winter ball for Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Winter Baseball League. In 40 games for the team, he .360 with 37 RBI, and his 12 home runs set the DWL record for regular season homers by a left-handed hitter. He continued to produce in the playoffs, hitting six more homers and 18 more RBI.^[1] His performance earned him the DWL Rookie of the Year accolade. He was added to the 40-man roster on November 20.

Originally a switch-hitter, Francisco abandoned hitting right-handed in 2009 to become a full-time lefty.

Juan began the year in double-A Carolina. He played in 109 games for the Mudcats, where he hit .281 with 22 home runs and 78 RBI in 437 at-bats. For the third year in a row he earned mid- and post-season All-Star recognition, this time in the Southern League. He was promoted to the triple-A Louisville Bats. He played in 22 games, getting 92 at-bats, and hit .359 with 5 homers and 19 RBI. Juan again earned a promotion, this time to the Cincinnati Reds.

Francisco made his debut for the Reds as part of a 3–1 win over the Houston Astros on September 14, 2009 at Great American Ball Park. Pinch hitting for left fielder Darnell McDonald in the seventh inning, Francisco faced pitcher Jeff Fulchino and struck out in his first Major League at bat.^[2] He finished his September call-up batting .429 (9-for-21) with his first career big-league homer and seven RBI.

He was again named Minor League Hitter of the Year, and Baseball America rated him the organization's best power hitter and best infield arm.

He headed back to the Gigantes for the 2009–10 DWL season. He played in 46 games this time, batting .302 with 11 doubles, 11 homers, and 42 RBI. The Gigantes were runner-ups in the playoffs, and in 22 games of post-season play he hit 3 home runs with 18 RBI. This performance earned him the title of 2009 DWL Most Valuable Player.

Francisco spent 2010 mainly with the Louisville Bats. Ironically, in his best statistical season to date, he was not named to any All-Star roster for the first time in four years. For the Bats, he played in 77 games and hit .286 in 308 at-bats, slugging 18 homers and 59 RBI in his shortened season. He spent the rest of the season with the Reds, and saw action in 36 games. He hit .273 with one homer and seven RBI in 55 at-bats.

He played winter ball with Cibao again, and continued to be one of the top players. In 39 games and 152 at-bats, he hit .322 with 8 homers and 30 RBI. They lost in the championship game again, but this time without Francisco, who fouled a pitch off his leg under his right knee on December 10 and missed the rest of the season. He was hospitalized when it became infected and inflamed and the knee had to be drained, but Walt Jocketty, Reds GM, said that it was nothing serious.^[3] Despite missing part of the season, Francisco won his second consecutive DWL MVP award. This and his other trips to the DWL playoffs, which are taken very seriously in the Dominican Republic, have given Juan post-season experience which he can bring with him to the big leagues.

Francisco made the club out of spring training in 2011 as a backup to Scott Rolen, backup left fielder, and a left handed bat off the bench. He switched his number from 64 to the more conventional number 25. On September 12, 2011, Francisco hit a home run off Chicago Cubs pitcher Rodrigo López that cleared the right field bleachers at Great American Ball Park. It was estimated to have gone 502 feet. It was the second longest homerun in Great American Ballpark history behind Adam Dunn's 535 ft home run in 2004.^[4]

Atlanta Braves[link]

On April 1, 2012, Francisco was traded to the Atlanta Braves for pitcher J. J. Hoover.^[5] Debuted at 3rd base on April 7, 2012 for the Braves against the Mets.

Francisco plays first base and left field in addition to third base. He is known as a free swinging power hitter with a high strikeout rate. He also has a good throwing arm, as evidence by his recognitions from Baseball America in 2009.

Francisco "Paquín" Estrada Soto is a former Major League Baseball player for the New York Mets. Estrada, a catcher, appeared in one game for the Mets in 1971. Estrada is the current manager of the Chihuahua Dorados in the Mexican League (Summer), Hermosillo Naranjeros in the Mexican Pacific League(Winter). In addition, he is the manager of the Mexico national baseball team for the World Baseball Classic.

In the United States, he is probably best known for being part of the trade that sent Nolan Ryan and three others, including Estrada, to the California Angels for Jim Fregosi. However, he is one of the biggest stars in the history of Mexican baseball. While he played in just one game in the major leagues, Estrada holds the minor league record for games caught (2,847), and played for 26 seasons in the Mexican League (1966-1970 and 1974-1994.

Estrada has also been a manager in Mexico since 1983. His teams have won three Mexican League championships (the Piratas de Campeche in 1983, the Bravos de León in 1990, and the Piratas again in 2004).

Estrada was elected to the Salón de la Fama del Beisbol Profesional de México, the Mexican baseball Hall of Fame, in 2000.^[1]

Brian Viloria (born November 24, 1980 in Waipahu, Hawaii) is a Filipino-American professional boxer He is the reigning WBO Flyweight champion. He also won the WBC Light Flyweight and IBF Junior Flyweight titles. His nickname "The Hawaiian Punch" was first given to to him by Jesus Salud, another former world champion in boxing.

Amateur career[link]

In 1999, he won the US championships, the national Golden Gloves and the world title as an amateur at the 1999 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Houston, Texas but lost early at the Sydney Olympics 2000 against Brahim Asloum, who he had beaten in the 1999 World Championships in Houston, Texas. His overall record was 230-8.

He went to Northern Michigan University as part of the United States Olympic Education Center. Viloria bested both Glenn Donaire in the quarter-finals, and future world champion Nonito Donaire in the semi-finals of the 2000 US Olympic Trials. Won a spot on the 2000 Olympic Team by defeating his one time Team mate, Karoz Norman.

Viloria went to the Sydney Olympics as a medal favorite, but lost to eventual gold medalist Brahim Asloum of France, 6-4. Viloria landed dozens of body punches but the judges did not award points for his blows.^[1]

Professional career[link]

On September 10, 2005, Viloria dropped down to light flyweight and won the WBC title by knocking out Eric Ortiz in the first round with a powerful right.

He defended it once successfully in 2006 and was undefeated in 20 bouts (1 was a no-contest). Viloria's unbeaten streak ended when Mexican Omar Niño Romero won by decision.

In a rematch held on November 18, 2006 at Las Vegas, Nevada, Romero held onto his title with a controversial majority draw decision, with Viloria knocking down Niño twice. Following the fight, Niño was stripped of his title when he failed a post fight drug test being tested positive for methamphetamines and the second match between them was declared a no-contest.

On April 14, 2007, he fought Edgar Sosa for the vacant WBC title but lost a decision. Viloria then decided to move up to the super flyweight division and began training under former champion, Roberto Garcia, at La Colonia Gym in Oxnard, California.^[2]

Brian Viloria (20-2) won a unanimous decision against Jose Garcia Bernal (26-11-1) in his debut at the super flyweight division at the Alameda Swap Meet in Los Angeles, California on January 5, 2008. Viloria knocked Bernal down in the 8th (final) round. All 3 judges scored 78-72 for Viloria.^[3] Viloria followed that win by scoring four more victories (Cesar Lopez by Unanimous Decision, Fred Heberto Valdez by a 3rd round KO, Juan Javier Lagos by Unanimous Decision, and Benjamin Garcia by 2nd round KO).

Light Flyweight[link]

On April 19, 2009, Viloria moved back down to junior flyweight to challenge Mexican Ulises "Archie" Solís for the IBF Junior Flyweight title, putting in what perhaps is the best performance of his career. Pressured by a fading career due to his past losses in big fights, Viloria defeated Solis, whom at the time of the fight was rated the #1 Jr. Flyweight by The Ring^[4] in the 11th round with a vicious right to the jaw. The official bout stoppage was a KO 2:56 into the 11th round.^[5] The fight was held at Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines, site of Thrilla in Manila, as the co-main event of the Donaire-Martinez fight. Along with the win, Viloria snapped Solis' 11-fight unbeaten streak, 8 of which were title defenses while extending his win streak to 6.

Viloria won his first defense of his IBF light flyweight title on August 29, 2009 by unanimous decision against Jesus Iribe.

For his second defense, Viloria fought Carlos Tamara of Colombia on January 23, 2010. Though leading in points, the referee called a halt to the bout in Tamara's favor as Viloria was close to passing out in the twelfth round. Thus ended Viloria's title reign. Moments following the bout, Viloria passed out due to extreme exhaustion.

In his next fight, Brian Viloria returned to the flyweight division. He fought Mexico's Omar Soto on July 10, 2010 in the Philippines, at the Yñares Sports Arena, Pasig City, Metro Manila. .^[6]

WBO World Flyweight Defenses[link]

On December 10, 2011. Brian Viloria knocked down Giovani Segura in 8th Round TKO. After his fight against Segura, He fought Omar Nino Romero on May 13, 2012 in Ynares Sports Arena, Pasig City, Philippines. In the 9th round, He caught Romero with face and body powerful punches until the referee stops the fight. He retains again his WBO Flyweight title.
