"Mind and Life" XXVI "Mind, Brain and Matter" (Day 2 afternoon), Drepung Monastery, Mundgod, India (January 18, 2013) PARTICIPANTS Tenzin Gyatso His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Arthur Zajonc, PhD Arthur Zajonc was professor of physics at Amherst College from 1978 to 2012, when he became President of the Mind & Life Institute. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan. He has been visiting professor and research scientist at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, and the universities of Rochester, and Hannover. He has been Fulbright professor at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. Michel Bitbol, PhD Michel Bitbol is presently Directeur de recherché at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, in Paris, France. He is based at the Centre de Recherche en Epistemologie Appliquee (CREA) in Paris He teaches the Philosophy of Modern Physics to graduate students at the University Paris I (Pantheon-Sorbonne). He was educated at several universities in Paris, where he received successively his M.D. in 1980, his Ph.D. in physics and biophysics in 1985, and his "Habilitation" in philosophy in 1997. Geshe Thupten Jinpa Geshe Thupten Jinpa is the principal English translator to the Dalai Lama since 1985. He has translated and edited more than ten books by the Dalai Lama including The World of Tibetan Buddhism (Wisdom Publications, 1993), A Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective on the Teachings of Jesus (Wisdom Publications, 1996), and the New York Times bestseller Ethics for the New Millennium (Riverhead, 1999). Geshe Thupten Jinpa was born in Tibet in 1958. He received his early education and training as a monk at Zongkar Chöde Monastery in South India and later joined the Shartse College of Ganden monastic university, South India, where he received the Geshe Lharam degree. He taught Buddhist epistemology, metaphysics, Middle Way philosophy and Buddhist psychology at Ganden for five years. Jinpa also holds B.A. Honors degree in Western Philosophy and a Ph.D. degree in Religious Studies, both from Cambridge University, UK. Over the last several years, largely through the work of the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative, Science for Monks, and Science Meets Dharma, science instruction has been given to a small group of monastic scholars. Very recently, the decision was made to require science education for Geshe degrees at Tibetan monastic universities, and to facilitate all monastic students being introduced to modern science and the profound philosophical and ethical issues raised by science and technology. In recognition of this fact, this conference is taking place at one of the historically important Tibetan academic institutions, Drepung Monastery in Mundgod, India (Mind & Life Institute, 2013). In this video, i had cut out some passages with long traductions to the tibetan language (only in part 1/2). KOAN KENŠO
KOAN, in the philosophy of Zen Buddhism, stands for an equivocal and hardly soluble question that forces a disciple to abandon unproductive attempt to understand the nature of universe through logic. The collapse of logic thinking enables a direct experience of reality.
KENSHO stands for the first short experience of enlightenment which can also be defined as the first Satori. It is a short leap into the essence of reality – a moment when the distinction between the observer and the object of observation disappears and one becomes aware of the uniform an undivided reality hidden in apparent oppositions and differences. The experience of Kensho does not mean that we have forever got rid of common, »non-enlightened« way of thinking. Before the last we are to experience numerous momentary enlightenments and many obstinate doubts. The disciple should not attempt to attain Satori (Kensho) by conscious endeavour; neither should one feel proud when achieving it. Enlightenment itself is a spontaneous event, nothing special, although it is a proof of disciple's progress.

AWAKE IN THE WORLD: Teachings from Yoga & Buddhism
for Living an Engaged Life by Michael Stone
In this collection of writings, Michael Stone teaches the essentials of mindfulness and yoga practice, combining simplicity with the notion of interdependence of all beings. Regarding yoga practice, he emphasizes that yoga is not about some ultimate reality but about the here and now; it's about the way things unfold in each moment. With that awareness, the practitioner opens to a still calm at the root of all experience. This state is a glimpse of freedom from dissatisfaction and craving.

Gelek Rimpoche Your Mind - Your Reality Essence of Tibetan Buddhism 28
http://www.jewelheart.org/ The mind is under your control. When you look, you can direct it. Observe yourself and you can direct it. So taming your mind means: don't let the mind go in a negative way, but try to keep in a positive way, constantly and continuously, as much as you can. Thoughts are part of the mind. Some people will tell you, "Watch your mind, whatever is popping up, peel it off." What is popping up is your thoughts. Thoughts are part of your mind. I will say here: all 52 mental faculties are part of mind. That's what I mean with saying that there is oneness, yet there is separation. Maybe you need to think about this a little more. What difference will knowing that make to you? It will give you a little insight. At the present level, whatever mind you have, if you look in a positive subject, like the Four Noble Truths - whatever your understanding for example you gain of the First Noble Truth or the Second Noble Truth and Third Noble Truth and Fourth Noble Truth, you may have that as information, you may have that as knowledge, you may have that as some kind of deeper movement, but whatever may be, that very part of that mind is the mind that will become total knowledge. From the Buddhist point of view that will become Buddha, because it accepts everything and takes it in and becomes of it. Then total knowledge it totally built up and that's how it is. That's why training the mind is almost becoming like spiritual practice. That's what it is. And that defines your own future, in a positive way or negative way. What mental faculties are you engaging in more?- published: 20 Sep 2013

Relax and enjoy... There is no single, widely-agreed definition of spirituality. Social scientists have defined spirituality as the search for the sacred, for that which is set apart from the ordinary and worthy of veneration, "a transcendent dimension within human experience...discovered in moments in which the individual questions the meaning of personal existence and attempts to place the self within a broader ontological context." According to Waaijman, the traditional meaning of spirituality is a process of re-formation which "aims to recover the original shape of man, the image of God. To accomplish this, the re-formation is oriented at a mold, which represents the original shape: in Judaism the Torah, in Christianity Christ, in Buddhism Buddha, in the Islam Muhammad." In modern times spirituality has come to mean the internal experience of the individual. It still denotes a process of transformation, but in a context separate from organized religious institutions: "spiritual but not religious." Houtman and Aupers suggest that modern spirituality is a blend of humanistic psychology, mystical and esoteric traditions and eastern religions. Waaijman points out that "spirituality" is only one term of a range of words which denote the praxis of spirituality. Some other terms are "Hasidism, contemplation, kabbala, asceticism, mysticism, perfection, devotion and piety". Spirituality can be sought not only through traditional organized religions, but also through movements such as liberalism, feminist theology, and green politics. Spirituality is also now associated with mental health, managing substance abuse, marital functioning, parenting, and coping. It has been suggested that spirituality also leads to finding purpose andmeaning in life. Spireality is spiritual reality.
