Should Schools Teach Creationism?
Debate held in the National Library of Scotland in February 2009 and organised by the Institute of Ideas and the Humanist Society Scotland. Debate Outline The debate over Creationism is one of the hottest flashpoints in the battle between secularism and religion. While the US has seen extended conflict over the theory of evolution, new challenges to Darwinism under the guise of intelligent design (ID) have arisen in the UK. Concerns centre on school science education, from Sir Peter Vardy's Emmanuel Schools Foundation to the controversial teaching packs distributed by the anti-evolution group Truth in Science. Although the Royal Society and much of the scientific establishment have denounced the teaching of Creationism, and the Royal Society's embattled director of education resigned last year after causing controversy by suggesting teachers should discuss Creationism in class, a recent MORI poll revealed that over 40% of the public believe that creationism or ID should be taught alongside evolution in school science classes. While few seriously endorse the literal Biblical story of Creation, ID on the other hand claims to highlight Darwinism's shortcomings on scientific grounds. Evolution is 'just a theory' after all. Surely in the spirit of encouraging critical thinking we should 'teach the controversy'? As science is about questioning received truths rather than establishing certainties for all time, does this not permit a more flexible approach to science education ...

Debating Darwin: Should evolution be taught as the only truth?
Speakers: Simon Conway Morris Steve Fuller David Perks Chair: Alex Hochuli Blurb: The debate over creationism has sprung up as the latest flashpoint in the battle between secularism and religion. While the US has seen extended conflict over the theory of evolution - from the 1925 'Scopes Monkey Trial' to the recent Dover, PA court case "new challenges to Darwinism under the guise of intelligent design (ID) have arisen in the UK. Concerns centre on school science education, from Sir Peter Vardy's Emmanuel Schools Foundation to the controversial teaching packs distributed by the anti-evolution group Truth in Science. The rise of 'Islamic creationism', modeling itself on ID, adds to concerns that Islam poses a special threat to secularism in Britain. Although the Royal Society and much of the scientific establishment have denounced the teaching of creationism, a recent MORI poll revealed that over 40% of the public believe that creationism or ID should be taught alongside evolution in school science classes. While few seriously endorse the literal biblical story of creation, ID on the other hand claims to highlight Darwinism's shortcomings on scientific grounds. Evolution is 'just a theory' after all. Brilliant Bede Academy, Blyth
A highlight of the walk was the visit to Bede Academy in Blyth. The students were so smart and I was such a scruff, but they were also extremely polite and friendly. The video features: Lauren, Lisa, Sam, Andrew, Dana and Sam. The future for Blyth is bright thanks to the arrival of the Bede Academy and the world-class track record in academic excellence of the Emmanuel Schools Foundation.

Meet the Great Satisfier, the Holy Spirit
MEET THE SATISFIER, THE HOLY SPIRIT
Remember that little song…
I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart
Where?
Down in my heart!
Where?
Down in my heart!
I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart
Down in my heart to stay
And I'm so happy
So very happy
I've got the love of Jesus in my heart
Down in my heart
And I'm so happy
So very happy
I've got the love of Jesus in my heart.
THIS MORNING WE WILL DISCUSS HOW TO BE FULLY AND FOREVER SATISFIED
John 4:14 (ESV) but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Jesus Engages the Woman at the Well
Jesus and his disciples had been walking all day, from dawn until about the sixth hour, (6pm). Jesus stopped and rested near the well at Sychar. The disciples went on to get some food. Dusty, tires, hungry, Jesus set down by the well. Jesus saw a women coming and when she got close enough he said, give me to drink. She insults him by saying “Why do you a Jew, ask me a Samaritan for water?
John 4:11 (ESV) The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?
Then Jesus pointed down into that well, at which so many generations of men and livestock had satisfied their thirst, and Jesus said: Everyone that drinks of this water will thirst again!
This is true of every earthly fountain of satisfaction or joy.
No matter how deeply you drink, you soon thirst again.
Wealth
Worldly fame or power
Worldly pleasure
Human knowledge
Fountain of science, literature, philosophy
Human love
Sex
Ecstatic drugs
Not one of these fully satisfies; neither do they satisfy for very long.
Then our Lord added the words from our text:
John 4:14 (ESV) but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
DRINK AND KEEP ON DRINKING OF THE WATER THE LORD JESUS GIVES AND YOU WILL BE FULLY AND FOREVER SATISFIED!
But what is the water that our Lord Jesus gives?
The commentaries give a great many answers to this question, but I believe Jesus provided the answer in His own words.
John 7:37-39 (ESV) On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
THE WATER WHICH JESUS CHRIST GIVES IS THE HOLY SPIRIT AND IT FLOWS FROM OUR HEART.
To Know This Water and to Drink of it, You Must Be Thirsty, and You must come to Jesus
(IMPORTANCE OF ASKING)
John 4:10 (ESV) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
Luke 11:13 (ESV) If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Anyone who really receives the Holy Spirit as an indwelling presence will be fully and forever satisfied, and that is the only way to be fully and forever satisfied.
It is a great thing to have your source of satisfaction and joy within yourself.
To Have JOY…
Not in your environment
Not in circumstances
Not in your possessions
To Have a Fountain Of Joy Within Your Own Heart!...
This Supernatural Life that Christ wants us to live is a life that is not conditioned upon our circumstances, our possessions, our friends, even our family.
A NATURAL LIFE IS A CONDITIONAL LIFE.
When circumstances are going great, we are going great.
When our environment is pleasant, we are pleasant.
When our possessions are going great, we are doing great.
But when something goes wrong with our job our health, our family, our marriage, our possessions, we tend to get miserable.
OUR ‘STUFF’ EFFECTS OUR ‘STUFFING’
You feel great when you are walking around with a couple hundred bucks that you can spend any way you want. But do you feel just as great when you are knee deep in debt and you don’t know how you are going to buy groceries, or pay your utility bill, or even make a rent or house payment?
You feel great when you get a new car or boat, but do you feel just as great when you wreck it, or it is stolen or damaged?
You feel great when your house is increasing in value and your assets are growing at a 15-20% clip, but do you feel just as great when you are underwater in your house and your assets are worth less than when you invested?
You feel great when your kids are doing well, your spouse and you are getting along great, but do you feel just as great w

Should schools teach Creationism?
Debate organised by the Institute of Ideas and the Humanist Society Scotland. Held in the National Library of Scotland in February 2009 almost exactly 200 years after the birth of Charles Darwin.
The debate over Creationism is one of the hottest flashpoints in the battle between secularism and religion.
As science is about questioning received truths rather than establishing certainties for all time, does this not permit a more flexible approach to science education, where debate is encouraged? Further, the sheer complexity of evolutionary theory leads ID advocates to claim it is best to cultivate a critical eye in pupils, rather than have them take as truth a misunderstood Darwinian theory.
Is science, or 'scientism', just as fundamentalist as religion, arrogantly claiming to know everything, or are doubts such as these a reflection of scientists' failure to make the case properly for what science does have to offer? Is this merely another case of the 'balance fallacy' the mistaken belief that even falsehoods should be given air time? Or should schools teach creationism in science lessons?
Speakers:
* Alex McLellan, Founder and Executive Director of Reason Why
* Dave Perks, Head of Physics at Graveney School in London
* Christopher Brookmyre, Novellist, including Boiling a Frog
* Julian Baggini, writer and philosopher
* Marc Surtees, Edinburgh Creation Group and Paradigm Shift
* Chair - Dr Tiffany Jenkins, Institute of Ideas
