Zeina (Arabic: زينة, IPA: [ˈzeːnæ]; born Wessam Reda Ismail El-Degwi, 4 February 1981) is an Egyptian actress.
Zeina started her career as a model in video clips, using her real name Wesam. She was chosen by director Daoud Abdel Sayed to play the role of Hanna in the movie Ard El kof (Land of Fear), her first film. She also worked as a broadcaster in one of the channels of Arab Radio and Television where she presented technical programmes.
With the entry into the acting world she chose to name herself "Zeina". She was called "Sophia Loren of Arabs" by director Youssef Chahine after he saw her in the movie Montaha El Laza (Joys). She won the title of best actress in 2005 and 2006 in the public polls and she also won the award for outstanding performance for her role in the series "Hdrat El Motaham Aby (My Father the accused)."
Artist Ahmed Zaki called her "Penelope Cruz" for the similarities between herself and the Spanish actress. Zeina participated in a number of cinematographic works, such as El Haya fe Montaha el Laza (Joys of Life), Sayed El Atefy (Lord of the Emotional), Zaza, El Sahabh (Ghost), El gezyra (island), 90 Minutes, Puskas, Trapezoid, Captain Hima, One - Zero, Two Girls From Egypt, Adult and Seven Albermbp.
Zeina Awad co-hosts Fault Lines,Al Jazeera English’s flagship current affairs programme about the Americas. Awad believes that Fault Lines strives to identify and patch information gaps by "asking the tough questions" of the countries and people in power.
Awad’s Fault Lines coverage brought her to India where she reported on US pharmaceutical companies conducting clinical research abroad. She also traveled to Puerto Rico, projected to be the world’s slowest growing economy, to analyze the economic policies imposed on its people. She rounds out this season's coverage with an exploration of the growing gap between the wealthiest 1% of Americans and the rest of society.
Prior to joining the Fault Lines team, Awad covered some of the Middle East and Africa’s most important stories for Al Jazeera English's People and Power, including the rise of Islamism in Lebanon’s Palestinian refugee camps, Iraq’s forgotten refugees, and the underground world of Zimbabwean human trafficking. Based in the Middle East, Awad traveled throughout the region extensively, covering news stories ranging from the Gaza war to Lebanon’s violent unrest. Awad's reporting also brought her to Africa, where her coverage spans the continent and focuses on issues such as the Darfur conflict and the Zimbabwean exodus. She has reported from Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, South Africa, Kenya, Morocco, Algeria, Canada, the US and India. Awad has interviewed numerous world leaders, including former Nigerian President Obasanjo, Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, veteran Lebanese politician Walid Jumblatt and members of the US Congress, as well as Arab and African ministers.
