Russian military stage drills close to Ukraine border hours before ceasefire expires

The Russian army staged military drills in the Volgograd region not to far from the Ukrainian border on Thursday (June 26), a day before the ceasefire announced by Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko was due to expire. Military united from Belarus and Armenia, joined the drills, held some 400 kilometres (250 miles) from the border with Ukraine's rebellious Luhansk region. The drills focused on reconaissance missions and military support for troops and military hardware advancing through different types of unfamiliar landscape. Ukraine, which had been a part of similar drills in the past, was not invited this year, Russian army representatives said. The unilateral ceasefire announced by Poroshenko is due to expire at 10 p.m. (1900 GMT) on Friday (June 27). What is in the news today? The Russian army took part in military exercises in the Chelyabinsk region on Friday, under the watchful eye of Russia's Defence Minister, Sergei Shoigu. The drills have been taking place all week in the Ural Mountains on Russia's southern border with Europe and Asia. The Defense Ministry said the training was to ensure troops were fully prepared for possible military and political changes in the Central-Asian region, following the withdrawal of US-led coalition troops from Afghanistan at the end of the year. A long and bloody battle has been raging near the eastern Ukrainian city of Slavyansk despite Kiev's ceasefire. Self-defense fighters claim to have killed a whole platoon of Kiev's National Guard, while the latter claim to have destroyed a militia tank.
