The Battle of Yijiangshan Islands (simplified Chinese: 一江山岛战役; traditional Chinese: 一江山島戰役) was a conflict between forces of the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) of the Republic of China and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of the People's Republic of China, over one of the last strongholds of Nationalist (ROC) forces near mainland China on the Yijiangshan Islands. The conflict occurred from January 18 to January 20, 1955, during the First Taiwan Strait Crisis, and resulted in a PLA victory and the complete destruction of the ROC garrison.
The Yijiangshan Islands consist of two islands, the Northern Yijang (Chinese: 北一江) Island and the Southern Yijiang (Chinese: 南一江) Island, and the region is approximately 1.2 square kilometers (0.46 square miles) in area. Due to its strategic location near the coast of Zhejiang, it had become a forward base for the Nationalist defense of Chinese coastal islands centered on Dachen Island, as well as a base for launching guerrilla attacks on mainland China.
The Taiwan Strait or Formosa Strait, also known as the Black Ditch (Chinese: 烏水溝; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: O͘-chúi-kau), is a 180 kilometres (110 mi) wide strait separating the island of Taiwan from the Asian mainland. The strait is part of the South China Sea and connects to the East China Sea to the north. The narrowest part is 130 km (81 mi) wide.
The Taiwan Strait is located between Asia and the island of Taiwan.
Much of China's Fujian Province is situated west of the strait while the islands of Kinmen, Xiamen, Pingtan and Matsu lie just off the coast. Penghu lies in the east of the strait. The island fishermen use the strait as a fishing resource. The Min and Jiulong rivers empty into the strait. Taiwan also administers Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu.
The Strait has been the theatre for several military confrontations between the PLAN and ROCN since the last days of the Chinese Civil War in 1949 when the Kuomintang (KMT) forces led by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek retreated across the Strait and relocated their government to their final stronghold of Taiwan. A theoretical median maritime border known as the cross-strait median (海峽中線) also exists on the water to prevent certain transportation from passing.
The Taiwan Strait Crisis is a conflict involving Taiwan and the People's Republic of China.
The Yijiangshan Islands (simplified Chinese: 一江山岛; traditional Chinese: 一江山島; pinyin: Yījiāngshān Dǎo) are two small islands eight miles from the Tachen group, located between Shanghai and Keelung in the Taiwan Strait.
During the first Taiwan Strait crisis it was captured on January 20, 1955 (a few days earlier?) by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) from Republic of China (ROC) Nationalist forces in the Battle of Yijiangshan even as the U.S. Seventh Fleet was patrolling nearby.
