Innocent village girl, Devi (Nutan) meets Shekhar (Sanjeev Kumar), a young doctor, whose ideals are to do social service in villages and help the masses. Their meeting blossoms into love and they get married. But, this irks Pooranchand (Rehman), the elder brother of Shekhar, who blesses them with a heavy heart. Rampyari, the mother-in-law of Pooranchand wants her younger daughter, Shobha to get married to Shekhar and she plots tactics to uproot Devi from the house. Her efforts crown with success, when Shekhar goes abroad for work and a notorious blackmailer Joginder comes to the house. Rampyari and Jogindar join hands and both are successful in making Pooranchand's mind prejudiced and getting Devi thrown out of the house . On his return, Shekhar goes on a frantic search for Devi. But the network of conspiracy woven against Devi is so strong that even Shekhar starts doubting Devi when he finds a photograph of her in a brothel. Will Rampyari and Jogindar succeed in their devious games? Can Devi survive the test of time and unite with Shekhar?

Mohammed Rafi (Hindi: मोहम्मद रफ़ी, Urdu: محمد رفیع; December 24, 1924 July 31, 1980), often addressed as Rafi Sahib, was an Indian playback singer whose career spanned four decades and is one of the most versatile male singers in the history of Indian cinema. Rafi sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Sindhi, Kannada and Telugu. He also recorded English and Persian songs. He is primarily remembered, however, for his Hindi songs, which still remain very popular in India today and also among the Indian diaspora. He dominated the Bollywood music industry from the 1950s to the 1970s along with Mukesh, Manna Dey, and Kishore Kumar.
Between 1950 and 1970, Rafi was one of the most sought after singers in Bollywood.
In 1965, he was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Sri award.
On Thursday, July 31, 1980, Rafi died at 10:50 p.m., following a massive heart attack. His last song was "Shaam phir kyun udaas hai dost" (Aas Paas), which he had recorded with Laxmikant-Pyarelal couple of days before his death. He was survived by four sons (Saeed Rafi, Khalid Rafi, Hamid Rafi, Shahid Rafi), 3 daughters (Parveen, Nasreen, Yasmin) and 18 grandchildren. Naushad wrote on Rafi's Death- " Goonjte hai teri awaz ameero ke mahal me. jhopro ki gharibon me bhi hay tere saaz, yu to apne mousiki par sab ka fakr hota hai magar ay mere saathi mousiki ko bhi aaz tujh paar naaz hai "
Rafi's funeral procession was recorded on a very rainy day in Mumbai. A portion of that same recording has been used in one of the Hindi movie released later. It was one of the biggest funeral processions mumbai had ever witnessed, with over 10,000 people attending.
The Padma Shri Mohammed Rafi Chowk in the Bandra suburb of Mumbai is named after Rafi. Lata Mangeshkar quotes on Rafi- " saral man ke insan Rafisab, bahut suriley the, yea meri khus kismati hai ke maine unke saath sabse jada gana gaye. gana kaise bhi wo aise ga lete the ke gana na samajhne wale bhi bah bah kar utht te the. Aise gayak bar bar janam nahi lete."
A documentary about Rafis life is under production by The Films Division of India.
On September 22, 2007 a shrine to Rafi designed by artist Tasawar Bashir was unveiled in Birmingham. Bashir is hoping that Rafi will attain sainthood as a result.

We just go so enamored about these things so much because of the circus they are carrying or the amount of money they have collected that they can project themselves through this medias and all that. The amount of befooling they do is still much more than the stupidity we have, perhaps so they are still carrying on. They hanker after money first of all. And we think by giving them money we are purchasing God. So many people believe that God can get money. God doesn't understand, you must know that He doesn't understand money. He has never seen money all his life. If you ask Me I don't know how to sign a check. You can ask all these trustees how bad I am. I don't know how to sign a check. My Husband bas been teaching Me how to sign a check I don't know. I can't. My brain doesn't work there. Just goes off. Tried and tried to learn I can't, I can't do it. Somebody has to write for Me and then I can sign. But I do not know how to write a check, because the interest is not there. Such a person, how can He have interest in your purse or in your women or in your properties how can He have? And this is one thing one of the worse conditioning we have that we can pay for God. I can understand ignorant people do that. In the villages, when I go there, ladies will bring five P for me. One lady brought a 5 P. I said see I don't take any money. So she said, all right, should I give you 10 P? Because they are so simple, they are so conditioned, that they don't understand. But in their simplicity they get their realization. But even the complicated and the intellectuals you must see the way they get after these horrible gurus who teach them everything that is anti God, anti Christ. Absolutely, obviously, it is anti Christ. But when they suffer when they have problems - we have a lady here who was a very rich lady. She lost all her money. Her husband became a bankrupt. Her children became mad. She became epileptic, her husband got epilepsy. And when they were absolutely destitute, she took away all the properties everything, she came to Sahaja Yoga, she is all right now. But her husband becoming insolvent had to leave London. And the gentleman now has six thousand crores of rupees in cash. But nobody thinks about it from where does this money come.
One has to understand that as seekers we should not sell off our brains. The seekers are all right, but your brains should be intact. And you should not give up your brain to understand the whole thing, logically you must bring to proper understanding. This is one point very much against all these things that are holy, auspicious. But this is on and on; for thousands of years, people have been doing this on a smaller scale, now we have real culprits who are doing in a bigger scale. But nobody is objecting them, nobody is saying anything about them, nobody wants to write about them, because they can pay money.
But the seekers must be alert as to understand, what do I want? I want my spirit or this kind of a nonsensical ego pampering that I can purchase my guru. Secondly in our awareness, we should reach another very, very important, extremely important point that something has to happen to us, so that our power must be manifested. Not to depend on the powers of the guru. I mean they may say something about Me, all right they may say anything whatever they like. But why should you believe in it till you get that power within yourself. Specially, we Indians have a very bad habit of touching everybody's feet. He might be a bad man, a very inauspicious man. He might be the worst possible personality to think of. Just because he is putting up a show why should you touch his feet? To be very frank, I really don't like everybody to touch My feet. Because everybody touches My feet, may be some people are so bad that I get blisters on My feet. But in the villages if you tell them don't touch Mother's feet, then that is the biggest insult to them. Everybody's feet must you touch, for what? Why to bow this forehead before these horrible people? Once you have not known about them, once you have found out that they are not gurus, still you go on touching their feet. But before you have not found out, there is no rhyme and reason why should you touch their feet.
I will give you an example of a lama. These lamas also are another headaches. One of them went to Sweden and he wrote to them. I mean in the West, people are very much enamored if somebody comes as a Sannyasi, even in India, though Sitaji has written very clearly that a sannyasi should not enter into the house of the grihastha. He should stay outside in the forest away from the village. You may send him some food that's all. But he is not to talk to any women of the house....

Nargol, 1970 -- A new era of Sahaja Yoga began
"I used to think, "Why are men doing such a drama and what has happened to them? Why are they doing all this nonsense?" But to whom was I to say all these things? I was all alone then. At the time when I arrived here [Nargol, 1970], the only confusion that I had must be done. After coming here, when I saw this rakshasa was mesmerizing people, I realized then if at that time somehow the Sahasrara was not opened, then God knows where these people would ultimately be lead. Moreover, the spell of his influence could not be ignored and also what would have been the fate of his disciples, those who were trying to seek God and the truth?
Then I decided to stay the night at the seashore. I was all alone and felt very good. There was no one around to say a word. And then in meditation, I felt that the time had arrived when the Sahasrara must be opened. The moment I desired for the opening of the Sahasrara, what I noticed was that the Kundalini rose like a telescope within me, opening one stage after the other, travelling upward -- khat, khat, khat. The colour of it was like the mixture of all the colours of these lamps put together, with which you have decorated. It was like the colour of molten red-hot iron.
Then I saw the external structure of the Kundalini that kept on rising up, creating sounds at each chakra. The Kundalini rose up to pierce the Brahmarandhra. Piercing mine was not a big deal, but then I thought it would now become easier in the world.
I felt at that moment whatever energy was there above suddenly entered within me like a cool breeze from every direction. It was then I realized that now there was no harm in starting the work. ..."

"In that principle of Mahalakshmi the awakening of the Kundalini takes place and it is to make the Kundalini rise that people sing Ude, Ude Ambe. "Kundalini, please rise". We pray in that way in the temple of Mahalakshmi, because in this form of Mahalakshmi only Kundalini can rise. And then the Kundalini in the form of Mahalakshmi rises through all the Chakras and crosses them up to Sahasrara Chakra where the complete breakthrough takes place.
Now, this Mahalakshmi has taken birth so many times amongst us. Let's see. First of all there is a very close relation between the principle of Mahalakshmi and the Guru. In this relationship there is love and purity. Now, if you look from the beginning, all those great Gurus had a daughter or a sister. As one of those relations Mahalakshmi took birth. Like Janaka's daughter, Sita, was the incarnation [Swarupa] of Mahalakshmi, She was the principle [tatwa] of Mahalakshmi. Sita was Mahalakshmi and the daughter of Janaka. Then Nanaka's sister, Nanaki, was also Mahalakshmi. Her relationship was that of a sister. Moreover, Mohammad Sahib's daughter, Fatima, was Mahalakshmi too. Again, Radha. Radha was Mahalakshmi's incarnation [swarup]. Then again Mary was Mahalakshmi and Her relationship was that of Purity. She was so pure that She gave birth to Christ. She gave him birth as a Virgin. And as the incarnation of the Virgin, because of Her purity, She got a pure son like Christ. Also She was Mahalakshmi.
And by these Avatars of Mahalakshmi our chakras got fixed [bandh]. Like the chakra of Rama is on the right heart. [pointing to the Chakras] At this level, She is in the form of Shri Sita. There She is in the form of Radha, there She is in the form of Mary. At this place [Agnya] the three Chakras meet : Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati. Then these three Shaktis meet and when those three Shaktis meet, then only one Shakti which is the Adi Shakti takes form. That's why on Sahasrara Chakra, the Adi Shakti resides, but it is said that "Sahasrare Mahamaya" : She is the Adi Shakti, but She is in the form of Mahamaya. Owing to the existence of these three Shaktis the Adi Shakti who is in the form of Mahamaya [Mahamayaswarup] came in this world in order to open all the Sahasraras. And She is in front of you, you know about it, so there is no need to tell you more."
