Adelaide Anne Procter (30 October 1825 – 2 February 1864) was an English poet and philanthropist. She worked prominently on behalf of unemployed women and the homeless, and was actively involved with feminist groups and journals. Procter never married, and some of her poetry has prompted speculation that she was a lesbian. She became unhealthy, possibly due to her charity work, and died of tuberculosis at the age of 38.
Procter's literary career began when she was a teenager; her poems were primarily published in Charles Dickens's periodicals Household Words and All the Year Round and later published in book form. Her charity work and her conversion to Roman Catholicism appear to have strongly influenced her poetry, which deals most commonly with such subjects as homelessness, poverty, and fallen women.
Procter was the favourite poet of Queen Victoria. Her poetry went through numerous editions in the 19th century; Coventry Patmore called her the most popular poet of the day, after Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Her poems were set to music and made into hymns, and were published in the United States and Germany as well as in England. Nonetheless, by the early 20th century her reputation had diminished, and few modern critics have given her work attention. Those who have, however, argue that Procter's work is significant, in part for what it reveals about how Victorian women expressed otherwise repressed feelings.
Adelaide (i/ˈædəleɪd/ AD-ə-layd) is the capital city of the state of South Australia, and the fifth-most populous city of Australia. In June 2014, Adelaide had an estimated resident population of 1.30 million. The demonym "Adelaidean" is used in reference to the city and its residents. Adelaide is north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, on the Adelaide Plains between the Gulf St Vincent and the low-lying Mount Lofty Ranges which surround the city. Adelaide stretches 20 km (12 mi) from the coast to the foothills, and 90 km (56 mi) from Gawler at its northern extent to Sellicks Beach in the south.
Named in honour of Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, queen consort to King William IV, the city was founded in 1836 as the planned capital for a freely-settled British province in Australia. Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide's founding fathers, designed the city and chose its location close to the River Torrens, in the area originally inhabited by the Kaurna people. Light's design set out Adelaide in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parklands. Early Adelaide was shaped by prosperity and wealth — up until the Second World War, it was Australia's third largest city. It has been noted for early examples of religious freedom, a commitment to political progressivism and civil liberties. It has been known as the "City of Churches" since the mid-19th century.
A Woman was Charlie Chaplin's ninth film for Essanay Films. It was made in Los Angeles at the Majestic Studio and released in 1915. The film starts with Chaplin meeting Edna (Edna Purviance) and her parents in a park; the mother is played by Marta Golden and the father by Charles Insley. In this film, Chaplin dresses as a woman to fool Edna's father. It was the third and last time Chaplin played the role of a woman on film. He played a woman in two Keystone films: The Masquerader and A Busy Day.

I hope you enjoy this! Its actually the last stanza of a much longer poem but I feel like it stands on its own fairly well:) You can read the whole poem for the entire story but this is the part I always quote and read! It almost never fails to brighten my mood:) Have we not all, amid life's petty strife, Some pure ideal of a noble life That once seemed possible? Did we not hear The flutter of its wings, and feel it near, And just within our reach? It was. And yet We lost it in this daily jar and fret, And now live idle in a vague regret; But still our place is kept, and it will wait, Ready for us to fill it soon or late. No star is lost we once have seen, We always may be what we might have been. Since good tho' only thought has life and breath, God's life - can always be r...

Voices of the Past by Adelaide Anne Procter You wonder that my tears should flow In listening to that simple strain; That those unskillful sounds should fill My soul with joy and pain — How can you tell what thoughts it stirs Within my heart again? You wonder why that common phrase, So all unmeaning to your ear, Should stay me in my merriest mood, And thrill my soul to hear — How can you tell what ancient charm Has made me hold it dear? You marvel that I turn away From all those flowers so fair and bright, And gaze at this poor herb, till tears Arise and dim my sight — You cannot tell how every leaf Breathes of a past delight. You smile to see me turn and speak With one whose converse you despise; You do not see the dreams of old That with his voice arise — How can you tell what links ...

Victorian chicklit. She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed tells me that's the only snide remark I'm permitted to make. Adelaide was British, not Australian, in case you were thinking so. She was the most popular female poet of her day. Would-be poets should consider forgotten poems like this, take warning and try a lot harder. It may not be a great poem but it's pretty damned good. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adelaide_Anne_Procter The Victorian paintings come from this site, where you can buy reproductions: http://www.huntfor.com/index.htm So you think you love me, do you? Well, it may be so; But there are many ways of loving I have learnt to know. Many ways, and but one true way, Which is very rare; And the counterfeits look brightest, Though they will not wear. Yet they ring, almost, quite...

Some Christians labels other Christians heretics, lukewarm, liberal, backsliddden, etc. Bible is very clear - don't judge other Christians. Now this vlog explains why and compare differences in spiritual relationships to martial relationships. This vlog is signed in American Sign Language.
Judgmental environments can have undue influence on us. Slowly, we can become judgmental. Such an environment and attitude is diametrically opposed to Christianity. Ironically, such judgmental attitudes often come from those who claim to be Christian. Of course, this is not unique to religious fanatics. By nature or nurture, humans across every spectrum of belief, creed, and philosophy have shown judgmental tendencies. If we truly take Christ's teachings to heart, we will strive to remove this tendency. It might take removing ourselves from the environment that is having undue influence upon us.

PLEASE NOTE: What is put here is NOT being put forward as hard evidence that the paranormal exists. This was not done under heavy research conditions, although precautions were taken to reduce tainting of anything captured. Adelaide's Haunted Horizons is not about scientifically researching. H.H. was set up so people can let their hair down and have fun finding out for themselves what it is like to be on the hunt! For this reason we get to play with all those gimmicks and toys that cannot be seen in the field as credible, such as the Ghost Box and dowsing rods. Anything from these that we capture will be put here also, as a curiosity ONLY!

LibriVox recording of A House to Let, by Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Elizabeth Gaskell and Adelaide Anne Procter. Read by Ruth Golding. A House to Let is a novella originally published in 1858 in the Christmas edition of Dickens' Household Words magazine. Each of the contributors wrote a chapter (stories within a story, and in the case of Adelaide Anne Procter, as a story in verse) and the whole was edited by Dickens. The plot concerns an elderly woman, Sophonisba, who notices signs of life in a supposedly empty dilapidated house (the eponymous "House to Let") opposite her own, and employs the efforts of an elderly admirer, Jabez Jarber, and her servant, Trottle, to discover what is happening within.
