The Quiet City: Winter in Paris
Find me on Facebook and Twitter. @AndrewJulianB http://www.facebook.com/andrewjulianb
I can't promise I'll have anything interesting to say, but I'll keep you posted on any new work I put out there. Thanks!
Claire and I recently took a trip to France, and I filmed this during our time in Paris. Until this trip, I had only ever experienced Paris in the summer and I was struck by just how different the city is when most of us tourist are gone. We were equipped with our metro and museum passes and were able to easily access most places of interest without even waiting in line. It was incredible! We were even given a private tour of the École du Louvre. Thanks Elisabeth!
The weather wasn't always perfect, but our experience was totally different and unique. Now I'm truly curious to visit the city in other seasons. Maybe a trip during the Fall someday?
I continue to be amazed by the little camera that could, aka the the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. I have yet to shoot ProRes or DNxHD, though I've seen amazing footage that was shot in the compressed modes. For me it's all about the uncompressed raw. It's not the easiest or fastest format to work with in post, but it allows me to color grade the images to get exactly the look I'm after.
I had the latest firmware for this shoot and put the timelapse feature to use. It's not going to replace a DSLR for serious timelapse work, but it is an amazing companion in my opinion. It can shoot consistently at higher frame rates than a DSLR can sustain, so shots where you only want a subtle timelapse effect are achievable. You can also shoot with longer intervals, but the slowest shutter speed is still only 1/24th of a second so shots become less smooth the longer your interval is. Ideally, you'd want to be closer to a 180 degree shutter.

Please share and help us reach our goal of 1,000,000 views so we can start to affect mainstream nutritional change!
-----
Over the past few decades we’ve been trying harder and harder to be healthy and fit. The result: We got heavy and sick. What’s going on here?
If a doctor prescribes us a medication and it makes us worse, we would stop taking it and fire our doctor. If an architect builds us a house and it crumbles, we would fire them too, and we certainly would not blame ourselves for our housing issues. Why not apply the same logic to health and fitness? Seems reasonable. But what else is there other than the old calorie counting approach we’ve all been taught?
There is an alternative.
We can do what every human being up until a few decades ago did: Eat actual food and stay active. No complex calorie counting. No confusing workout routines. No pills, powders, or potions.
It may be helpful to think about this alternative approach like this: Want to avoid lung cancer? No need to worry about breathing, just don’t smoke. Keep the stuff that causes lung cancer out of your body. Similarly, want to avoid obesity and diabetes? No need to worry about eating, just don’t eat “foods” that didn’t exist prior to the obesity and diabetes epidemics. Keep the stuff that causes obesity and diabetes out of your body.
We’ve gotten worse while trying harder because we’re essentially trying to avoid lung cancer while continuing to smoke. We’ve been instructed to eat foods that cause obesity and diabetes. Avoiding those diseases is really hard and complex when we are told to eat the foods that cause them. We’ve been given bad information, but we can certainly take the power back and make slim simple again.
To get started, try these seven tips:
1. Remember that nobody knew what a calorie was let alone counted them when the rates of overweight were twenty times lower than they are today. Counting calories cannot be required to stay slim.
2. Avoid any person or program who makes health and fitness seem complex. There’s a good chance they are more interested in making money than in helping you.
3. Vitamins and minerals are essential and there are essential fatty acids and essential amino acids. There is no such thing as essential sugars or essential starches. Don’t make the majority of your diet unneeded sugars and starches.
4. If a food doesn’t spoil, it will likely spoil your health. Make sure most of what you eat comes out of your refrigerator or freezer.
5. Replace your fear of fat with a fear of anything processed. Note: Processed = not found directly in nature.
6. If our grandmothers didn’t eat it, we shouldn’t either. She, and all of our other ancestors, stayed slim and healthy without really trying. We can to.
7. Exercise “cancels out” eating processed foods like exercise “cancels out” smoking—it doesn’t. Processed foods, like cigarettes, do damage to our bodies that has nothing to do with calories, and therefore cannot be undone by burning more of them.
If counting calories and exercising obsessively is working and enjoyable for you, please keep it up. However, if you are interested in simplifying slim you may enjoy our non-profit group’s School House Rocks inspired animated nutrition short Slim is Simple.org.
About Slim is Simple.org
Slim is Simple.org (http://www.SlimIsSimple.org) is a not-for-profit group of researchers, professors, and donors who know that the obesity, diabetes and heart disease epidemics will never be resolved if educators and policymakers continue to propagate the same nutritional practices that caused them. Slim is Simple.org offers a free multimedia nutritional curriculum that enables anyone with an internet connection to easily apply the simple and proven nutritional science that enables long-term health.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 handheld 1080p AVCHD video with zoom - Cameralabs
A video clip filmed with Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GH1 and its 14-140mm kit lens, using its 1080p FHD AVCHD movie mode; the camera was set to the PAL region, so the signal was output from the sensor at 25p and recorded at 50i. I used Program mode and the default settings, and the lens stabilisation was enabled.
This (and the 720p version uploaded earlier) are supposed to demonstrate how the GH1 and kit zoom perform when used like a traditional camcorder - ie handheld with wobbly panning and a zoom of the lens. As you'll see, this style doesn't suit the GH1, especially in its 1080p mode, and while the filming technique here is careless, it does illustrate that the GH1 is not a replacement for a camcorder for many people.
That's not to say it can't take great-looking footage though. Check out my GH1 1080p compilation coming soon, which shows it in a much better light.
Vimeo can't accept the camera's native MTS files, so we used Adobe Media Encoder to convert it to an MP4 file using the same frame size, frame rate and H.264 compression. The conversion was very quick, implying little if any transcoding, but the file size doubled. This could be the process of going between progressive and interlaced, but after much experimenting, this is the closest file I could upload to the original in terms of quality.
Feel free to download the original file and check out the quality on your own computer, although as explained above, the file size is not representative of what you'd get straight from the camera. The original file was half the size.

Run It Back: The Road to SoCal Regionals EPISODE 3(FINAL)
Finally. After a month long list of delays and technical hiccups, it's here. I've worked on this thing every single day for the last month till 5am in the morning. I have rarely gotten a break, or a chance to breathe. And now it's finished. There are still a few technical hiccups here and there(punctuation on some of the subs, and one of the clips isn't full screened. Just one. Right before the montage there's a short audio pop before it goes into full swing.), but they don't seem that big. I hope not. =P
This episode is the last. We finally head to SoCal Regionals to see how James, Brett, and Jorge fair. At the same time, we have interviews from Daigo, Seth Killian, Mike Watson, Tokido, and a whole slew of other people on the magic of the old days, and the beauty of arcades.
I hope you guys enjoy this. I'm looking over it constantly, and finding little nitpicks here and there which are driving me crazy, but for the most part the few people who have seen it while I've been struggling to get this uploaded have said they enjoyed it. I hope their right. I really worked hard on this. Didn't want to let you all down. If you would like an explanation on the delay(I feel you are owed one) you can scroll down further to where it says "WHAT HAPPENED?" and I'll give you one.
I also wanted to say thank you. Thank you guys for supporting my film, and the work that's gone into these. You may not think it much, but every time I get a message on XBL, or on twitter or anywhere else and people say "Hey, good job on Evo," or "I love Run It Back"... all of the frustration and stress of this whole thing takes a backseat, and I keep on working. Maybe it's because I take other peoples opinion way more into account at times, but I never want to compromise. I'm really glad you guys enjoy these, and I hope this last part lived up to your expectations.
The arcade's are beautiful meccas of radiance and culture, and irreplaceable monuments of an age where peoples passion and love for these games dictated their drive-- and they stand in places like Southern California, criminally under-appreciated at times. I said this last time, but it is so important that you go out and experience them. Street Fighter IV is not the only game there to play, there's so much more to these places other than just games. You go OUTSIDE. You meet PEOPLE. and after you're done, a majority of the time you go do something OTHER, than sit back at your house and play on XBL. You go hang out with friends, you get into trouble, you experience life FAR MORE than you would EVER on any internet connection.
It's preachy, but it's true. I thank you all for the support you have given me through this, and I hope to see you again soon with new projects and new ideas. =)
Enjoy.

AKA RedrappeR
P.S. I get to work on my rap album now(and my AE rap!) =D
WHAT HAPPENED?(Minor Spoilers):
After the first delay, I started ratcheting up my standards to an obscene, and sometimes unnecessary degree. Finally, I finished the episode about a week or so ago. It got to the point where I would look over 15 frames(NOTE: Film is run at 24/frames a second, so that's 2/3rds of a second) for over an hour and a half, and try to make sure EVERY SINGLE FRAME was perfect. It was insanity.
SO I finish the episode. I breathe a sigh of unmitigated relief, and close Adobe Premiere. The program takes 8 hours to render about 50 minutes of footage. So I head out to the arcade to relax and celebrate, play some AE, and plan to render the thing when I get home, and have it finish when I sleep.
I get home at around 1:30am. I turn on my computer and get this message:
"Windows has failed to start."
It gives me the option to start a recovery program or something, or try again. I try again.
Windows Freezes at the boot screen. I restart, and once again... Windows fails to start. I take a deep breath and start recovery. It freezes after about an hour(which I stay up for.) I restart the CPU again... and low and behold:
"Disk Read Error. Press CTRL ALT DELETE TO RESTART"
Which effectively means... my hard drive is dead. Or dieing.
Shit.
I shut off the cpu. I'm panicking now. You see, I forgot to back up the data right before I left. This isn't the first time this happened while editing, and if you don't know, rendering is REALLY hard drive intensive. I unplug the CPU, unplug the hard drive, and sleep.
I wake up in the morning, ready to face terrible music, and the thought of having to pony up cash to retrieve the data(those who know data recovery know that it is absurdly expensive.), and I turn on the computer.
"Windows failed to start."
I click try again... low and behold-- it works. I log in, backup the file, and sigh with relief. I turn off the cpu for a bit(as it's working now) and let it rest. I get back on and start to get ready to render.
Long story short, it dies AGAIN. I unplug HDD and CPU, and head to microcenter to pick up an extra hard drive. I figure, more disk s
