Save our seas: fix the Common Fisheries Policy
Our seas are in peril: more than 70% of Europe's fish stocks are overfished. Species are rapidly nearing extinction. Yet the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) allows European fleets to take 2 to 3 times more from our threatened oceans than what is considered sustainable. But, it doesn't have to be this way. Call for a strong reform of the CFP now, to ensure we have fish to eat in the future - and a fishing industry left to catch them. www.greenpeace.org.uk

A thriving fish industry... in the Israeli desert
www.israel.org Where can you find Nemo? In Israel's Arava desert, where aquaculture is blooming despite a dearth of fresh water. Israel's Arava desert gets just 30 millimeters of rainfall a year, but it produces 60 percent of Israel's fresh vegetable exports, 10% of cut flower exports ... and now it has a thriving ornamental fish industry, too. "The desert is dry and all the water that we have here first of all is water that we drill here in the Arava; we're not connected to a national water system," explains Alon Gadiel, director Arava Research and Development Center. Yet Israel is in the top six exporting countries for aquarium fish, and there are now 18 fish farms in the Arava. Three of them breed the clownfish better known as Nemos because of the hit movie "Finding Nemo." "A business like aquaculture is a very good business because you don't need a lot of land, and you don't need a lot of water. You need a lot of knowledge," says Gadiel. In addition, he stresses, "We breed fish that originally grow in the sea, and we sell them from captivity so we prevent harming the ecosystem." Oil Spill Threatens Louisiana Fishing Industry: Video
April 30 (Bloomberg) -- Bloomberg's Adam Johnson reports from Louisiana on the impact on the fishing industry of the oil spill threatening the coast following the sinking of a BP Plc oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Oil is escaping from the well at a rate of about 5000 barrels a day, five times faster than previously estimated, according to the US Coast Guard. Halliburton Co. said today it performed a number of services on the rig, saying it completed cementing about 20 hours before the incident. Lori Rothman and Mark Crumpton also speak. Grinding Nemo - Thailand
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv Pacific island nations have called for greater control over destructive fishing methods and overfishing, which they say are threatening our ecosystem, the life of local fishermen and a multi-billion industry. "It's up to the big fishing nations to show the world what they are going to do", says Palau fisheries official, Nanette Malsol, who leads a bloc of Pacific island nations this week. At the start of the tuna fisheries conference in Manila she has argued that large countries must urgently curb the use of destructive fishing methods. Most controversial are 'fish aggregation devices' which attract many fish species to one spot where they become easy prey to the fishermen. So where tuna are the fishermen's target, sea turtles, sharks and juvenile fish also get killed and discarded. "The fishing industry is being allowed to gamble with the health of the ocean, and it is time for governments to require full accountability."This shocking investigation also reveals how Burmese workers are virtually imprisoned on multinational fishing boats and suffer inhuman conditions. "They don't really care how local people survive". Ecologist Film Unit

NOAA IS KILLING THE AMERICAN COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN SO YOU CAN EAT TOXIC IMPORTED SEAFOOD .wmv
Imported sea food and farmed fish is very bad for you to eat, but if the American fishermen do not get the public support soon it is all you will have to eat. The commercial fishermen of America need help stopping the bad science that is regulating our fisheries. Please read my channel info and watch my videos. The fish population is still strong in all the places I haved fished from Alaska to Louisiana, from Florida to North Carolina, even after hundreds of years of fishing. We need the publics support now!

Sealord TV ad parody by GREENPEACE
www.greenpeace.org.nz We've made this spoof of Sealord's TV ad to reveal the truth beneath the public relations. In its new ad campaign Sealord says it looks after the ocean - because the sea means everything, that they take sustainability seriously, always take a conservative approach and aim to leave the oceans in a better condition than how they find them. That all sounds great, but unfortunately it's stretching the truth. In one video they say "Sealord tuna comes from stocks where the fish numbers are healthy". But yellowfin tuna has all but disappeared from New Zealand waters, and our own Government has been sounding the alarm internationally about declining commercial and recreational catches. What's more, Sealord's tuna is caught using one of the worst tuna fishing methods -- a deadly combo of fish aggregating device (FAD) and giant purse seine net which catches and kills endangered sharks, turtles, juvenile tuna and lots of other ocean life, and threatens tuna stocks. That is not a conservative approach, it is not taking sustainability seriously and it will not leave our oceans in a better condition than they are now. Many of the species caught as bycatch around FADs are in serious decline. It seems that for Sealord, sustainability is mostly about the sustainability of their image. Before claiming that they live for the sea, Sealord needs to change its tuna to FAD free. Until then their talk about being sustainable just sounds like a tall story. Note: We mean no ...

Albacore Tuna: A Micro-Cannery Flourishes
In the1970s, Oregon's coastal fishing industry, consisting for the most part of small, family-owned boats, was being devastated by the rise of large foreign fleets competing for ever-decreasing stocks. Seeing the industry changing and the big canneries moving out or closing, Warrenton fisherman Norman Kujala adapted by building his own cannery on the banks of the Skipanon River in 1978. The Skipanon Brand cannery is now run by the second generation of the Kujala family, including Paul, who fishes for salmon on the family boat called the Cape Windy, and Mark, who runs the cannery and oversees the processing of salmon, sturgeon and albacore. Mud Crab Fishing Industry in Queensland, Australia
Mud crabs are as much a Queensland icon as Fourex or the Brisbane Broncos. Mud crabs are harvested by professional fishers throughout the Queensland coast from Southport to Karumba, and generate almost $10 million in wharf value to the States economy. Mud crabs are sold mostly as an icon species to the tourist and restaurant trade. Click here for more info www.qsia.com.au

Take action! Canada: www.greenpeace.org New Zealand: www.greenpeace.org US: www.tunasecrets.com Australia: www.greenpeace.org.au Italy: www.tonnointrappola.it A helicopter pilot speaks out about his experiences onboard a number of purse seine tuna fishing vessels operating in the Pacific. His gruesome footage shows how the use of Fish Aggregation Devices is resulting in the bycatch of all sorts of marine life and contributes to the depletion of tuna stocks. Greenpeace is campaigning for more sustainable and less destructive tuna fisheries in the Pacific Ocean.
