Muslim Siege of Jerusalem - History of Israel #shorts
In the year 637, the Rashidun Caliphate, under Abu Ubayda, laid siege to Jerusalem, a vital city in the Byzantine Empire.
The city, fortified after its recent recovery from the Persians, braced for the Rashidun onslaught. Instead of a direct assault, the Rashidun army encircled Jerusalem.
After months under siege, Patriarch Sophronius proposed surrender, but only to Caliph Umar personally. In a historic move, Umar traveled to Jerusalem, accepting the peaceful surrender and ensuring religious liberties under the Umariyya Covenant.
This pivotal event marked a significant transition in Jerusalem's history, initiating an era of Muslim rule and religious tolerance.

The Siege of Jerusalem in 637 CE was a historic event during the early Islamic period. It was a significant battle in the context of the Muslim conquest of the Levant.
After the death of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Rashidun Caliphate, under the leadership of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, expanded its territories beyond the Arabian Peninsula. The Muslim forces, led by Khalid ibn al-Walid and later by Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, marched towards the Levant and confronted the Byzantine Empire.
In 637 CE, the Muslim forces laid siege to Jerusalem, which was under Byzantine control. The city was heavily fortified and well defended, making the siege a challenging and protracted affair. The Byzantine garrison and inhabitants of Jerusalem resisted fiercely, leading to intense fighting.
Caliph Umar, who was in Medina at the time, received a letter from the Patriarch of Jerusalem proposing terms of surrender. After consulting with his advisors, Umar decided to travel to Jerusalem to personally negotiate the terms of the surrender.
When Caliph Umar arrived in Jerusalem, he entered the city with humility, walking alongside the Patriarch. Together, they agreed on a treaty that granted favorable terms to the inhabitants and ensured the safety of their lives, property, and religious institutions.
One remarkable aspect of the treaty was that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a significant Christian site, was left under Christian control. This act of religious tolerance and respect for the rights of the people of different faiths was characteristic of Islamic governance.
The capture of Jerusalem by the Muslim forces marked the end of Byzantine rule in the city and the beginning of Islamic administration. It became a symbol of Muslim triumph and allowed for the establishment of a multi-religious and multicultural society in the region.
The Siege of Jerusalem is remembered as an important event in the history of Islam and the Levant, with enduring implications for the relationship between Muslims, Christians, and Jews in the region. It highlights the principles of religious tolerance and coexistence that characterized early Islamic rule.

The Siege of Jerusalem: How the Arabs Won the Holy City
In this episode, I delve into the dramatic events of the 7th century that led to the Arab conquest of Jerusalem. Discover the fascinating story of the siege that changed the course of history.
The Siege
The siege began in 636 AD when the Rashidun Caliphate, under General Khalid ibn al-Walid, launched their campaign to capture Jerusalem from the Byzantines. For months, the city was encircled, cutting off supplies and reinforcements. Despite the determined defense by the Byzantine forces, led by Patriarch Sophronius, the city eventually fell.
Key Figures
- General Khalid ibn al-Walid: Known as "The Sword of Allah," his leadership was crucial in the successful siege of Jerusalem.
- Patriarch Sophronius: The Christian leader and defender of Jerusalem, who negotiated the surrender to protect the city's citizens and holy sites.
- Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab: The second Caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate, who personally traveled to Jerusalem to finalize the terms of surrender.
Omar's Treaty
After months of siege, Patriarch Sophronius sought terms for surrender. Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab ensured a peaceful transition with Omar's Treaty, which included:
- Religious Tolerance: Christians could practice their faith freely and their churches were protected.
- Security and Protection: Inhabitants were guaranteed safety for their lives, property, and places of worship.
- Taxation: Non-Muslims paid the jizya tax, granting them protection and exemption from military service.
Omar's Mosque and the Temple Mount
Upon entering Jerusalem, Umar ordered the clearing of the Temple Mount, which had been neglected and used as a garbage dump. He then initiated the construction of a simple mosque on the southern end, later known as Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Bringing the Jews Back to the City
Caliph Umar invited Jews, who had been expelled under Byzantine rule, to return to Jerusalem. This restored the city's multi-religious character and allowed Jews to worship freely once again.
The 7th-century siege of Jerusalem was a turning point in history. The fair terms of Omar's Treaty, the clearing of the Temple Mount, and the invitation for Jews to return demonstrated the Rashidun Caliphate's commitment to justice and religious tolerance. Join me as I walk through the streets of this ancient city and uncover the legacy of the Arab conquest.

Welcome to this enlightening video on the Islamic conquest of Jerusalem 638 CE by Umar (RAA), the second caliph of Islam. In this video, we will delve into the historical events and background leading up to the pivotal event of the conquest, as well as its significance and aftermath. The city of Jerusalem has been a focal point of religious and political strife for centuries, with various empires and factions vying for control over its holy sites and strategic location. In Islam, Jerusalem holds a special place in Islam, being the location of Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam. It was also the first qibla, or direction of prayer, for Muslims before it was changed to Mecca.
Prior to the arrival of the Muslims, the Byzantines and the Sassanids had weakened each other after they fought on another, which benefited the Muslim armies that were expanding rapidly under the Rashidun Caliphate. Under the leadership of Khalid Ibn Walid, the Muslims had already defeated the Byzantines in several key battles and had captured several cities in the Levant region before laying siege to Jerusalem. In 638 CE, the Islamic army under the leadership of Umar (RAA) marched towards Jerusalem, marking a turning point in the city's history.
Through vivid narration and compelling visuals, this video will take you on a journey through the key moments of the conquest, including the negotiations with the city's Christian leaders, the symbolic entry of Umar (RAA) into the city, and the establishment of the Muslim presence in Jerusalem.
We will also explore the lasting impact of the Islamic conquest of Jerusalem on the city's cultural, religious, and architectural landscape, and its significance for Muslims around the world.
