Lake Kariba is the world's largest man-made lake and reservoir by volume. It lies 1300 kilometers upstream from the Indian Ocean, along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Lake Kariba was filled between 1958 and 1963 following the completion of the Kariba Dam at its northeastern end, flooding the Kariba Gorge on the Zambezi River.
The Zimbabwean town of Kariba was built for construction workers on the lake's dam, while some other settlements such as Binga village and Mlibizi in Zimbabwe and Siavonga and Sinazongwe in Zambia have grown up to house people displaced by the rising waters.
Lake Kariba is over 223 kilometers (140 mi) long and up to 40 kilometers (20 mi) in width. It covers an area of 5,580 square kilometers (2,150 sq mi) and its storage capacity is an immense 185 cubic kilometers (44.4 cu mi). The mean depth of the lake is 29 meters (95 ft); the maximum depth is 97 meters (320 ft). It is the world's largest man-made reservoir, four times as large as the Three Gorges Dam. The enormous mass of water (approximately 180,000,000,000,000 kilograms, or 180 petagrams [200 billion tons]) is believed to have caused induced seismicity in the seismically active region, including over 20 earthquakes of greater than 5 magnitude on the Richter scale.

Shot with a Phantom 2 and GoPro Hero 4 on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe over the course of 5 days. This is our second film on Lake Kariba, this time deciding to focus more on the dramatic scenery and the stunning wildlife all filmed from the water. The more time we spend on the Lake the more we fall in love with it, and exploring by boat is certainly one of the best ways to do it!
Jim Fowler and Peter Gros have a stimulating African adventure on the Zambezi River where it thunders over the famed Victoria Falls. From the base they float downstream in rubber boats thru the great Batoka Gorge and on to Songwe. At last they reach Lake Kariba where they join members of the Zimbabwe Game Department in a project to capture and relocate elephants to establish new herds in areas where elephants once lived but have been exterminated.
Umbozha is one of the best houseboats that provides transport and accommodation between Kariba, Victoria Falls and many safari lodges in the Northern part of Zimbabwe. I was fortunate to spend three days on the houseboat, and enjoyed every minute. Including the potentially risky lake swimming :) Shot using a GoPro Hero 3+. When build Lake Kariba was the largest man-made lake in the world. Self Drive Do it Yourself Zimbabwe: http://www.selfdrive4x4.co.za/ The lake formed by the dam wall - 281 km long, 32 km across at its widest point, and covering 5000 square km - is now one of Zimbabwe's major tourist attractions. Tourism, however, was far from the minds of those who, in 1950 pointed out that the growing demands for coal by existing thermal power stations in central Africa could not be met after 1960 by the railway system. A source of hydroelectric power would have to be found. The largest river in central Africa, the Zambezi, seemed the obvious source of water and the Kariba Gorge met all the criteria for a dam wall. The Gorge had been discovered by David Livingstone and its position as a bottleneck at en...

Kariba Dam & Hydroelectric plant is located in the Kariba Gorge of River Zambesi, between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The construction of that infrastructure, the first funded by World Bank in Africa, began in August 1956. It was completed at the end of 1959, six month ahead the scheduled terms, and was inaugurated on May 17 1960. Five international groups took part in the tender, the winner was an Italian consortium. For Salini Impregilo Group, Kariba Dam represents the first major collaboration between companies (Impresit, Girola, Lodigiani), that contributed to its history and that led, over the course of time, to its current configuration. This video shows the natural environment where the infrastructure was displayed, the construction site, preparatory activities and project execution,...
