200 Years of Madeira Wine Tasting at Wine Watch
You can not call yourself a wine lover if you have never tried Madeira. I remember the first time that I tasted a vertical selection of Madeira at the Great Wine Seminar and I was stunned at the wines complexity and the layers of flavors and aromas that continued to rise from the glass for hours. These Madeiras were from the cellar of Dr. Bob Maliner, the founder of this yearly event that has now been taken over by Bob and Arlette Cataldo in its 24th year. Join us as we will taste through one hundred seventy -two years of Madiera. Chef Michael Saperstein will be preparing a few courses to accompany the tasting wines. The fee for this tasting is $275 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463. Madiera is an island off the coast of Morocco that belongs to Portugal. Historically, it was a popular port of call for ships on the trade routes between Africa, Asia and the Americas. The original Madeira wines were made as a powerful white wine, however to protect them during transport they were fortified - alcohol is added before fermentation is complete, which stops the process and leaves residual sugar in the wine. Sea Captains discovered that long ocean voyages actually improved casks of Madeira. Unlike other wines, heat and oxidation are essential to Madeira and so the wine is virtually indestructible. During the 18th and 19th century, Madeira was America's wine of choice and most fashionable drink amongst hi-society. When the Declaration of Independence was signed they toasted ...

Treasure Hunters Find 100-Year-Old Shipwrecked and 100-year-old Port Wine and Madeira Wine
Over 100-year-old Port Wine and Madeira Wine is found on shipwreck Astrid. As Ocean X Team's treasure hunters were making their second expedition to a mysterious object, they took a turn to a shipwreck they spotted on their screens, not far away from the Baltic Sea Circle. There, the team discovered an untouched wreck with a figurehead. [Dennis Åsberg, Ocean X Team]: "We sent down divers to swim inside the cargo hold and they found this ... there were many of these bottles. We brought back a lot of them. We brought up about 21 bottles on board—11 were intact and 7 were drinkable." The ship Astrid is believed to have been sunk by the Germans around 1916 to 1917. It was a luxury ship from Stockholm on its way to Finland, loaded with Port wine, Madeira Wine and matches, among other things. The bottles were likely bottled in Stockholm and may have been proceeding to St. Petersburg. [Dennis Åsberg, Ocean X Team]: "I tasted some and the taste stayed in my mouth the whole day in fact. Fantastic! I've never drank anything like it. It's good." According to Åsberg, finding buyers would be no problem as many collectors would be interested in such rare, excellent quality wine with a 100-year history. He says the discovered wine will reach a high price—Champagne can auction for over $29000 US dollars per bottle. NTD News, Stockholm

Berrys' Port, Sherry & Madeira (own range wines)
www.bbr.com BBR are the leading UK importer of Vintage Port. But there is more to port than Vintage, and the BOS range captures the wonderful stylistic diversity of the category: tawny, colheita, late bottled vintage... Our revamped BOS Madeira range is available in 50cl bottles and covers the gamut of Madeira styles. All wines have been upgraded to the 5 Year Old Premium category, and most importantly, matured by the superior 'canteiro' ageing method. Lustau and the equally famous Sanlucar house of Barbadillo provide the bed-rock of our sherry styles, which run the gamut from the bone dry Fino, through the extra-Solera aged Seguidilla Manzanilla, then the decadently rich Fine Dry Oloroso and finally the luscious Oloroso Cream.

The American history of Madeira wine
Sweet wine has a distinguished history in the United States. Around the time the country was founded, sweet Madeira wine was imported by the barrel from Madeira, a Portuguese island 350 miles west of Morocco. Madeira wine was a favorite of Thomas Jefferson, and it was used to toast the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, says wine importer Bartholomew Broadbent. It's said that George Washington drank a pint a day and Betsy Ross sipped Madeira as she stitched the first American flag.
