Dr Kaveh L. Afrasiabi is a political scientist and author of Iranian origin who has lived for many years in the United States.

Teaching[link]

Afrasiabi has taught political science at Tehran University,^{[citation needed]} Boston University,^{[citation needed]} and Bentley College^{[citation needed]}. Afrasiabi has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University,^[1] UC Berkeley,^{[citation needed]} Binghamton University,^{[citation needed]} Center For Strategic Research, Tehran^{[citation needed]} and Institute for Strategic Studies^{[clarification needed]} in Paris.^[2] During 2004-2005, Afrasiabi was involved as an advisor to Iran's nuclear negotiation team.^[3] From 1996 to 2003, Afrasiabi was involved in a legal conflict with Roy Mottahedeh, former director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University, who had been his superior during Afrasiabi's time as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard, and Harvard University itself. The conflict started with an alleged extortion against Mottahedeh's subordinates and a "pre-dawn" arrest of Afrasiabi by Harvard police, and terminated in 2003 with a civil rights case against Harvard, Mottahedeh and the Supreme Court of the United States,^[1][4][5] in which Afrasiabi acted as his own attorney. During associated controversies, Afrasiabi was supported by Mike Wallace of the US television program 60 Minutes,^[6] author David Mamet,^[7] linguist Noam Chomsky and political scientist Howard Zinn,^[8] and former deputy prime minister of Iran, Farhang Mehr.^{[citation needed]}.In a video deposition, Mr. Wallace has defended Afrasiabi and accused professor Mottahedeh of making false statements to him about Afrasiabi.^[9] His "David and Goliath" battle with Harvard has been praised by Mike Wallace, who has stated "I admire Dr. Afrasiabi. He has been wronged. The cannons of Harvard are lined up against a pea shooter." ^[10]

Afrasiabi has written several books in relation to international relations, Iranian foreign policy and Iran – United States relations, including After Khomeini: New Directions in Iran's Foreign Policy (1994),^[11] Nir/North: A Cinematic Story about the Iran-Contra Affair (1996),^[12] Iran's Nuclear Program: Debating Facts Versus Fiction (2006)^[13] and Reading in Iran's Foreign Policy After September 11 (2008).^[14] Afrasiabi has also written several book chapters on Islam, environment^{[clarification needed]}, and theology, published by Harvard University Press, Chicago University Press and Wadsworth.^{[citation needed]}. Also, Afrasiabi has published a chapter on Islam, globalization, and ethics of non-violence in a compendium on Mahdism published by the Islamic Center of London.^{[citation needed]}. Afrasiabi has worked as a consultant to CBS's "60 Minutes" and has appeared on numerous television programs including CNN, MSNBC, Voice of America, and Al-Jazeera. Afrasiabi is a regular contributor to the New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, Global Dialogue, and Asia Times. Afrasiabi has written hundreds of articles in these and other newspapers and in scholarly journals including Harvard Theological Review, Harvard International Review, UN Chronicle, Brown's Journal of World Affairs, Middle East Journal, Journal of International Affairs, Telos, and Mediterannean Affairs. A supporter of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,^[16] he has spoken out in support of the fairness of the 2009 presidential election results on CNN^[16] and elsewhere^[16] and has been critical of protests over the results while at the same time calling for national reconciliation.^[16][16] In September 2010, Afrasiabi accompanied president Ahmadinejad's delegation to the United Nations and was quoted in Los Angeles Times expressing optimism on US-Iran dialogue.^[16][16] He is also a supporter^[16] of Iran's nuclear power program that was launched in the 1950s with the help of the United States as part of the Atoms for Peace program. Afrasiabi has called for education on the Holocaust in the Muslim Middle East as a "moral imperative."^{[citation needed]} Afrasiabi once challenged the right wing media host Glenn Beck who questioned Harvard University's decision to invite former president of Iran, Mohamamad Khatami, to speak at the university.^[16]

Global Peace activism[link]

Afrasiabi is a former consultant to the United Nations "Dialogue Among Civilizations", for which he interviewed the former Iranian president, Mohammad Khatami.^[17] He occasionally contributes to the UN Chronicle on peace and human rights related topics.^[18][19] Afrasiabi was the chairman of World Youth Festival on Dialogue Among Civilizations that took place in Vilnius, Lithuania during the Summer of 2000.^{[citation needed]} Afrasiabi is frequently referred to as the director of an non-governmental organisation called Global Interfaith Peace.^[18] On 24 December 2002, he issued a statement on behalf of the organisation in opposition to the risk of an invasion of Iraq.^[20] Afrasiabi is a member of the advisory board of the Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran^[21] and has appeared at numerous international conferences, most recently at the Tehran International Conference on Nuclear Disarmament, April, 2010. He has also issued a statement in the New York Times in support of nonproliferation and disarmament^[21] ,and has also written about the prospect for a peaceful resolution to the issue of the Iranian nuclear program in the context of diplomatic negotiations^[22].

Defense of Palestinian rights[link]

Dr. Afrasiabi has been a vocal advocate and defender of Palestinian rights for which he claims he has become a victim of harassment and repression by universities he has worked at in the United States. He has authored an open letter regarding his experiences and complaining of mistreatment for assuming a principled stance on this issue.^[23]

June 2010 incident[link]

On June 27, 2010, Afrasiabi went to the Zuzu restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts (United States). According to Afrasiabi, employees there showed "racist and indecent behavior"^[24] and "treated him unprofessionally",^[25] after which he exited the restaurant without finishing his meal nor paying for it. He approached some police standing nearby. A restaurant employee approached the police. The police then arrested Afrasiabi, on the basis of an outstanding warrant. Afrasiabi claims the warrant was issued in error, based on a 1986 unregistered vehicle incident, for which he had already paid the fines. The police claim it originated from an incident in 1999.^[25] Afrasiabi described the arrest taking place with "a racist attitude."^[26] While in custody, Afrasiabi claims that he was denied the right to a telephone call to contact his family and/or a lawyer.^[24][25][26] He said that the police officers were racist and brutal, stating, "If I had blond hair and blue eyes and had an American-sounding last name, no, I wouldn't have been subjected to this. They did this to me because they're racist."^[25]

In July 2010, Afrasiabi filed a formal complaint against Cambridge police alleging racism and physical injury in the hands of Cambridge police, who placed him under arrest after he had approached them to complain of being mistreated at a restaurant.^[27] The basis for his arrest was an outstanding warrant for a 1986 ticket, which Afrasiabi claimed to have paid at the time. A judge in Newton, Massachusetts agreed with Afrasiabi and dismissed the warrant without imposing any fines. Afrasiabi has alleged that while being transported to a court the next day, he was deliberately injured when the police van slammed the break after driving in full speed, resulting in Afrasiabi's multiple visits to the hospitals. The Cambridge police initially claimed that Afrasiabi had walked out of a restaurant without paying and then changed their story, deleting any reference to the restaurant.^[28] In a letter to The Cambridge Chronicle, Afrasiabi has demanded an apology from the police for what he alleges is their racist and brutal mistreatment of him ^[29]

Justin Raimondo (born Dennis Raimondo^[1] on November 18, 1951)^[2] is an American author and the editorial director of the website Antiwar.com. He describes himself as a "conservative-paleo-libertarian."^[3]

Background[link]

While a teenager, Raimondo took a brief interest in Objectivism before joining Young Americans for Freedom. In the 1970s, he became active in the Libertarian Party. He "joined the party in 1974, and was active in the MacBride for President campaign, the LP's second White House bid."^[4] With Eric Garris, he organized the "Radical Caucus", which brought them to the attention of the libertarian theorist Murray Rothbard. In 1983, after a schism in the Libertarian Party, Raimondo left and attempted to organize a libertarian faction in the Republican Party known as the Libertarian Republican Organizing Committee. After 1989, Raimondo again began working with Rothbard in the anti-war, paleoconservative John Randolph Club.

Though raised a Roman Catholic, Raimondo describes himself as "not a believer."^[5]

Political views and activities[link]

In 1980 Raimondo ran for public office for the first time. Running as a Libertarian candidate for the 16th district seat in the California State Assembly. Raimondo received 4,730 votes^[2] for 7.7% of the vote.^[6] In 1982, Raimondo ran for California's 5th district seat in the United States House of Representatives as a Libertarian, against Democratic incumbent Phillip Burton and Republican challenger Milton Marks. He received 14.2% of the vote.^[7] In the 1996 U.S. congressional elections, Raimondo ran as a Republican candidate in California's 8th district against Nancy Pelosi. While he championed conservative and libertarian causes in general, the main emphasis of his campaign was his opposition to the deployment of U.S. troops in the Balkans and, in particular, Pelosi's vote to that effect.^[8] Raimondo received 25,739 votes ^[9] for 12.39 percent of the vote while Pelosi got 84.34 percent^[10]

During the 1992, 1996, and 2000 presidential elections, Raimondo supported the campaigns of Pat Buchanan, both as a Republican and in the Reform Party. As he is openly gay,^[11] his support of the social conservative Buchanan attracted considerable attention.^[12]

In 1994, Raimondo was the San Francisco coordinator for the "Save our State" Proposition 187, which would have barred taxpayer funding of non-emergency services to illegal aliens in California.^[13] The measure was passed by California voters, but later struck down by a federal court.

At the end of 1995 Raimondo and Garris launched Antiwar.com.^[14] In 1999, with the Clinton administration's military intervention in the Kosovo war, the site became a full-time effort, providing a platform for their opposition to foreign intervention. Raimondo has been a vocal critic of the invasion of Iraq and the ongoing occupation.

In 2004, he supported Ralph Nader for President, and explained his reason for this in an article published in The American Conservative.^[15]

In 2008, he frequently wrote admiringly of Ron Paul's Presidential campaign, and has also expressed support for Dennis Kucinich,^[16]. He has also been critical of Barack Obama's Cabinet choices as President.^[17] along with the President himself.

Major ideas and recurring themes[link]

Several themes recur regularly in Raimondo's writing, mostly derived from his libertarian ideological roots. He strongly opposes what he considers to be the Israeli occupation of Palestine. He believes that initiatory war is wrong, immoral, and counterproductive, that a small group of neoconservatives in both major American political parties have been responsible for "lying us into war" repeatedly, and that the ideals of the Old Right conservative movement have been consistently sold out since around the time of the Vietnam War, when neoconservatives united with religious conservatives to pursue an expansive foreign policy, often in support of Israel.

Raimondo argued in a 2003 Antiwar.com column that Israel exerts a dominant force in the formulation of American foreign policy.^[18] Raimondo also believes the United States was led into World War II through lies by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and that the US provoked a war with Japan deliberately through economic sanctions.^[19] Raimondo's views have been compared by Christopher Hitchens to those of Charles Lindbergh,^[20] whom Raimondo describes as an "American hero sprung from the heartland."^[21] Raimondo has also written that Israeli intelligence operating in the U.S. had advance knowledge of the September 11, 2001 attacks.^[22]

Raimondo believes the government should refrain from adopting laws that would prohibit discrimination against gays.^[11] He also is against gay marriage,^[23] both mocking the idea that gays should adopt a heterosexual model of sexual and emotional relationships, and noting that as a libertarian he opposes "State incursion into such private matters."^[24] He also has written that after years of persecution by the state, gay rights activists want to "use the battering ram of government power" to actively intervene on behalf of homosexuals.^[25]

Gareth Porter (born 18 June 1942, Independence, Kansas^{[citation needed]}) is an American historian, investigative journalist and policy analyst on U.S. foreign and military policy. A strong opponent of U.S. wars in Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, he has also written on the potential for diplomatic compromise to end or avoid wars in Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Iraq and Iran. He is the author of a history of the origins of the Vietnam War, Perils of Dominance: Imbalance of Power and the Road to War in Vietnam.^[1]

Porter graduated from the University of Illinois, received a master's degree in international politics from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Southeast Asian politics from Cornell University.^{[citation needed]} During the Vietnam War, Porter served as Saigon Bureau Chief for Dispatch News Service International^{[citation needed]} and later co-director of the Indochina Resource Center,^{[citation needed]} an anti-war research and education organization based in Washington, D.C. He taught international studies at the City College of New York and the American University during the period 1982-90.^{[citation needed]}

Porter has written regular news reports and news analyses on political, diplomatic and military developments in regard to Middle East conflicts for Inter Press Service since 2005. He was the first journalist to provide a detailed account of the alleged secret Iranian diplomatic proposal to the United States in 2003,^[2] and has published an in-depth analysis of an exit strategy for Iraq.^[3]

In 2012, Porter was interviewed by Iran's Press TV on the United States' use of depleted uranium ammunition in Afghanistan, and he noted that while international coalitions have unsuccessfully tried to ban the use of uranium weapons, the United States is reportedly trying to find alternative weaponry for its armor-penetration needs.^[4] He has written for Veterans Today, repudiating a claim made by the International Atomic Energy Agency that Iran has built an explosives chamber to test components of a nuclear weapon.^[5] His articles also appear on Counterpunch, Huffington Post, Inter Press Service News Agency and Antiwar.com.^{[citation needed]}

Controversies[link]

Gareth Porter challenged the main rationale offered by U.S. President Richard Nixon in 1969 for continuing the Vietnam War, and argued that there would not be a communist "bloodbath" in South Vietnam after the U.S. withdrew its forces from Vietnam. He wrote a series of articles and monographs on the bloodbath argument.

His first monograph was The Myth of the Bloodbath: North Vietnam’s Land Reform Reconsidered in 1973.^[6] He challenged the account of mass killings in North Vietnam's land reform (see Land reform in Vietnam) by Hoang Van Chi, Bernard Fall and others. Instead of tens or hundreds of thousands killed, Gareth Porter suggested that 800 to 2,500 would be a more realistic estimate. His analysis was disputed by a non-academic critic, Daniel Teodoru, whose critique was entered into a hearing record and published by the Internal Security Subcommittee of the United States Senate.^[7][8] Porter replied to Teodoru point by point, and his response was entered into a separate hearing record published by the subcommittee.^[9] Porter was also criticized by historian Robert F. Turner^[10] and Hoang Van Chi.^[11]

Porter wrote a detailed exposé^[12] in 1974 of an account by U.S. Information Agency official Douglas Pike on what has been called the "Huế Massacre" by Vietnamese communists during the Tet Offensive of 1968. Porter alleged that Pike manipulated the official figures for civilian deaths in the destruction of Huế during Tet, primarily by U.S. bombing and artillery, to arrive at his figure of nearly 4,000 civilians murdered by the Viet Cong, and that Pike’s hypothesis about the Communist policy during the occupation of Huế was contradicted by captured Communist documents and other evidence.

In 1976-77, continuing his challenge to the bloodbath argument, Gareth Porter rejected early accounts of the mass killings by the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia. With George Hildebrand he wrote a book, Cambodia: Starvation and Revolution, which documented the deaths from starvation of thousands of people in Phnom Penh in the last months of the war in Cambodia and argued that there was a legitimate basis for sending most of the population of Phnom Penh -- much of which had been refugees from rural areas -- back to rural areas. Critics have argued that the book's sources included official statements from Khmer Rouge media about the availability of food in rural areas. Testifying before Congress in May 1977, Gareth Porter said that "the notion that the leadership of Democratic Kampuchea adopted a policy of physically eliminating whole classes of people" was "a myth fostered primarily by the authors of a Readers Digest book."^[13] Congressman Stephen J. Solarz compared Gareth Porter to those who denied the murder of 6 million Jews in the Nazi Holocaust. Gareth Porter rejected this comparison and cited reporting by reputable news outlets in support of this position.^[14]

But in an appearance on The Today Show in August 1978, Porter agreed that the Khmer Rouge regime was guilty of mass killings and mass starvation.^{[citation needed]} He reiterated that view in articles during the 1980s in The Guardian, The Nation, and Foreign Affairs among other publications.^{[citation needed]} He also wrote articles and op-eds criticizing the Reagan administration^{[citation needed]} and congressional supporters like Solarz^{[citation needed]} for a U.S. policy of collaborating with Thailand and China^{[citation needed]} to strengthen the military forces of Pol Pot in Cambodia.^{[citation needed]}

Douglas (Doug) Bandow (born ca. 1954) is a former columnist with Copley News Service and a senior fellow at the Cato Institute. He resigned from Cato in 2005 due a scandal involving payments for columns from lobbyist Jack Abramoff and wrote about it in the Los Angeles Times. As of March 2009, Bandow is again working at the Cato Institute.[1] He served as a Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan and as a Senior Policy Analyst in the 1980 Reagan for President campaign. He is also a columnist for Antiwar.com.

Bandow obtained his bachelor's degree in economics from Florida State University in Tallahassee in 1976. He completed a J.D. degree from Stanford in Palo Alto, California in 1979. He worked in the Reagan administration as special assistant to the president and also edited the political magazine Inquiry.[2] He is also a conservative Presbyterian. He was strongly opposed to the Law of the Sea Treaty and authored several books, including The Politics of Plunder.

Abramoff scandal[link]

Bandow resigned from Cato on December 15, 2005, after admitting he accepted payments from Abramoff — in return for publishing articles favorable to Abramoff's clients over a period of approximately ten years. He has referred to these activities as "a lapse of judgment," saying that he accepted payments for "between 12 and 24 articles" over a period of years. He stepped down after BusinessWeek Online contacted the Cato Institute to probe news of possible payments. He typically received on the order of $2,000 per article.[3]

Copley News Service, which carried Doug Bandow's syndicated column, suspended him immediately after the payola news became public. National Society of Newspaper Columnists President Suzette Martinez Standring said his action "isn't a lapse in judgment, it’s soul-selling. With so much practice at tweaking copy for others, I’m sure the advertising industry will welcome him." [4]

Steve Clemons, publisher of the blog The Washington Note, has referred to Doug Bandow as his friend and stated that he would be happy to have him guest blog again, but later withdrew that statement. He said that Bandow's resignation was sufficient penalty for his transgressions, and that the larger problem is the corruption of think tanks. [5]

Peter Ferrara, a senior policy adviser at the Institute for Policy Innovation, also took money from Abramoff to write favorable op-ed pieces. "I do that all the time. I've done that in the past, and I'll do it in the future," he explained.[6]

On December 28, 2005, Chuck Muth, president and CEO of Citizen Outreach, announced that Bandow was joining the think tank as vice president of policy. Although Muth noted that he and Bandow did not "agree 100 percent" on every issue, he expressed admiration for his new colleague's reasoning "based on objective thought and not emotion." "He's able to justify any public policy issue from a limited government standpoint in the best tradition of our Founding Fathers," he said.[7]

Robert Dreyfuss is a freelance investigative journalist whose work has appeared in The Nation, Rolling Stone, Mother Jones, The American Prospect, and other progressive publications. His work also appears on line at TomPaine.com.

Dreyfuss received a bachelor's degree from Columbia University. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dreyfuss was Middle East Intelligence director of the Executive Intelligence Review, the flagship journal of the Lyndon LaRouche movement.^[1][2] His 1981 book, Hostage to Khomeini, was commissioned by Lyndon LaRouche. In the book Robert Dreyfuss provides a detailed explanation of why the Carter administration was fooled into supporting the Khomeini revolutionaries but Khomeini backstabbed the US after the Shah was brought to the US for treatment. The book discusses how various officials in the Carter administration believed that an Islamic Iran could export the Islamic revolution to the Soviet Muslims and cause a break-up of the Soviet Union.This did indeed happen with a rise in an Islamic insurgency inside the Soviet Union which led to its breakup. The chechans Islamists continue to create major havoc for the Russians. Robert Dreyfuss named Cyrus Hashemi as being an CIA and Mossad agent and Cyrus Hashemi sued Robert Dreyfuss and Lyndon Larouche. Victor Ostrovsky in his book revealed that Cyrus Hashemi had indeed been a Mossad asset and had been assassinated by Mossad to shut him up because he was a testifying in a court trial in the US investigating Iran Contra.^[3] and it was cowritten with Thierry LeMarc. The book was published by the LaRouche publishing house of the time, New Benjamin Franklin House.^[4][5] [1][2]

In the 1990s Dreyfuss wrote on intelligence issues and foreign affairs, and profiled a number of organizations and public figures, including then governor of Texas, George W. Bush, and senators Trent Lott and John McCain. Since the September 11, 2001 attacks, he has written about the War on Terrorism and the Iraq War, including his book, Devil's Game In the book, The Devil's Game, Robert Dreyfuss does a more international analysis on the how the United States and especially the United Kingdom used Islamists as a powerful weapon against Communists and nationalists in the Arab and non-Arab Muslim world.He describes how the US labelled any nations leaders who were unwilling to work with the US as Communists. The book describes the roots of the Muslim Brotherhood and its connections with the CIA and western intelligence services. He describes how the CIA and the West used the Muslim brotherhood in an attempt to overthrow President Nasser of Egypt because he nationalized the Suez and kicked out many US and European companies out of Egypt. The book describes how the Israelis also had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and how they used a lesser enemy to attempt to destroy President Assad of Syria in the 1982 Muslim brotherhood uprising in Homs and Hama. The book provides many references and the author interviewed many witnesses. Similarly he describes how the CIA and British intelligence overthrew Premier Mossadegh of Iran because he nationalized Iran's oil removing the British from a major prize. It is interesting to note that the opposition in the uprisings in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Syria have all been the Muslim Brotherhood.
