At the entrance of the birtplace (museum) you will be assigned a guide that shows you the property and gives a lot of information in English. Birán is a small village in the municipality Mayarí of the province Holguín, Eastern Cuba. The place is best known as the birthplace of Fidel Castro and his brother Raúl. They were respectively born in 1926 and 1931 on the 93 km² estate of their father. The estate, where the birthplace of Fidel and Raul Castro is, opened in November 2002 as a museum. If you visit this museum you must ensure you have your passport with you. You can`t pay with dollars in Cuba for years, but the old tickets are still used. The last visit of Fidel Castro took place on September 23, 2003, on the centenary of his mother Lina Ruz who died in 1963. You can see the bed where Lina Ruz gave birth of each of her seven children, but also the crib where the Castro `s the first months of their lives slept. A total of 1.175 museum objects are managed by the National Heritage Board of the Ministry of Culture. The estate was originally founded in 1915 by the father, Angel Castro Argiz,
as sugarcane plantation. Various properties of the family are still on the estate and a primary school. The school had only one classroom. The road to Santiago de Cuba ran over the property and for that reason he built a hotel, pub, post office, shop and arena for cockfights. The arena for cockfighting and the housing for workers from Haiti. The workers spent the money they earned in the pub, shop or at the cockfights. Eleven of the 27 original buildings have been preserved and the estate has been declared a National Monument in 2009. The original wooden house of Angel Castro Argiz was destroyed by a fire in 1954, but there was a replica built in 1974. On the estate are buried Angel Castro Argiz, Lina Ruz González, the grandmother and other family. The President Raúl Castro wants to be buried in the Mausoleum of the Frank País Second Front, in the mountains of Santiago de Cuba, with his wife Vilma Espin.

En este vídeo les muestro la desgracia de que el río Birán se secó. Este fenómeno ocurre de ves en cuando, aunque hacia mucho que no ocurría. Le hacemos un llamado a las autoridades para que limpien el cause del río ahora que está seco y en los lugares que se pueda, ya que hay lugares por donde corren aguas residuales y sería muy difícil que los obreros se metan en dichas aguas.
Agradecemos al Ministro de Medio Ambiente, Jaime David Fernández Mirabal, por tener una brigada de obreros trabajando en los alrededores de la Cabeza de Birán. Lo que quisiéramos es que el Ministro disponga que alguien supervise esos trabajos, ya que los mismos no se están haciendo como es debido, parece que en Barahona no hay alguien que pueda supervisar esos trabajos para que los obreros recojan los desechos sólidos, como son: plásticos, botellas,etc. Tenemos otro vídeo que publicaremos en los próximos días sobre el desastre ecológico que se da en el río Birán, esperenlo.

Birán is a village in Holguín Province of Cuba, hamlet and consejo popular of Mayarí, best known as the birthplace of Fidel Castro in 1926 and Raúl Castro in 1931. Their father owned a 23,000 acre (93 km²) plantation there.
Geography
It is located 30 kilometers (19 mi) south-west of Mayarí and 9 kilometers (5.6 mi) south of Cueto, in the foothills of the Nipe Mountains (Sierra de Nipe).

Fidel Castro
Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (American Spanish: [fiˈðel aleˈxandɾo ˈkastɾo ˈrus] 
audio ; born August 13, 1926), commonly known as Fidel Castro, is a Cuban politician and revolutionary who governed the Republic of Cuba as its Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then its President from 1976 to 2008. Politically a Marxist–Leninist and Cuban nationalist, he also served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1961 until 2011. Under his administration Cuba became a one-party communist state; industry and business were nationalized, and state socialist reforms were implemented throughout society. Internationally, Castro was the Secretary-General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1979 to 1983 and from 2006 to 2008.
Born in Birán as the son of a wealthy farmer, Castro adopted leftist anti-imperialist politics while studying law at the University of Havana. After participating in rebellions against right-wing governments in the Dominican Republic and Colombia, he planned the overthrow of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista, launching a failed attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953. After a year's imprisonment, he traveled to Mexico where he formed a revolutionary group, the 26th of July Movement, with Che Guevara and his brother Raúl Castro. Returning to Cuba, Castro took a key role in the Cuban Revolution by leading the Movement in a guerrilla war against Batista's forces from the Sierra Maestra. After Batista's overthrow in 1959, Castro assumed military and political power as Cuba's Prime Minister. The United States was alarmed by Castro's friendly relations with the Soviet Union, and unsuccessfully attempted to remove him by assassination, economic blockade, and counter-revolution, including the Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961. Countering these threats, Castro formed an alliance with the Soviets and allowed them to place nuclear weapons on the island, sparking the Cuban Missile Crisis – a defining incident of the Cold War – in 1962.

En este vídeo les muestro la desgracia de que el río Birán se secó. Este fenómeno ocurre de ves en cuando, aunque hacia mucho que no ocurría. Le hacemos un llamado a las autoridades para que limpien el cause del río ahora que está seco y en los lugares que se pueda, ya que hay lugares por donde corren aguas residuales y sería muy difícil que los obreros se metan en dichas aguas.
Agradecemos al Ministro de Medio Ambiente, Jaime David Fernández Mirabal, por tener una brigada de obreros trabajando en los alrededores de la Cabeza de Birán. Lo que quisiéramos es que el Ministro disponga que alguien supervise esos trabajos, ya que los mismos no se están haciendo como es debido, parece que en Barahona no hay alguien que pueda supervisar esos trabajos para que los obreros recojan los desechos sólidos, como son: plásticos, botellas,etc. Tenemos otro vídeo que publicaremos en los próximos días sobre el desastre ecológico que se da en el río Birán, esperenlo.
