Sūtra (Sanskrit: सूत्र, Pāli: sutta, Ardhamagadhi: sūya) is an aphorism (or line, rule, formula) or a collection of such aphorisms in the form of a manual, or, more broadly, a text in Hinduism or Buddhism. Literally it means a thread or line that holds things together and is derived from the verbal root siv-, meaning to sew^[1] (these words, including Latin suere and English to sew, all ultimately deriving from PIE *siH-/syuH- 'to sew'), as does the medical term "suture."

In Hinduism sutra denotes a distinct type of literary composition, based on short aphoristic statements, generally using various technical terms. This literary form was designed for concision, as the texts were intended to be memorized by students in some of the formal methods of scriptural and scientific study (Sanskrit: svādhyāya). Since each line is highly condensed, another literary form arose in which commentaries (Sanskrit: bhāṣya) on the sutras were added, to clarify and explain them.^[2]

In Brahmin lineage, each family is supposed to have one Gotra, and one Sutra, meaning that a certain Veda (Śruti) is treasured by this family in way of learning by heart.

One of the most famous definitions of a sutra in Indian literature is itself a sutra and comes from the Vayu Purana:

alpākṣaraṃ asandigdhaṃ sāravad viśvatomukham
astobhaṃ anavadyaṃ ca sūtram sūtravido viduḥ

Of minimal syllabary, unambiguous, pithy, comprehensive,
continuous, and without flaw: who knows the sūtra knows it to be thus.

In Jainism, sūtra refers to canonical sermons of the Mahavira contained in the Jain Agamas, and to some later (post-canonical) normative texts.

In Buddhism, the sūtra refers mostly to canonical scriptures, many of which are regarded as records of the oral teachings of Gautama Buddha. In Chinese, these are known as 經 (pinyin: jīng). These teachings are assembled in part of the Tripitaka which is called Sutra Pitaka. There are also some Buddhist texts, such as the Platform Sutra, that are called sūtras despite being attributed to much later authors.

In the book "Modern Buddhism", Geshe Kelsang Gyatso defines sūtra as "The teachings of Buddha that are open to everyone to practice without the need for empowerment. These include Buddha's teachings of the three turnings of the dharma wheel^[3].

Some scholars consider that the Buddhist use of sūtra is a mis-Sanskritization of Prakrit or Pali sutta, and that the latter represented Sanskrit sūkta, "well spoken", "good news" (as the Buddha himself refers to his speech in his first sermon; compare the original meaning of Gospel), which would also resolve as sutta in Pali.^[4] The early Buddhist sutras do not present the aphoristic, nearly cryptic nature of the Hindu sutras,^[5] even though they also have been designed for mnemonic purposes in an oral tradition. On the contrary, they are most often lengthy, with many repetitions which serve the mnemonic purpose of the audience. They share the character of sermons of "good news" with the Jaina sūtras, whose original name of sūya (in Ardhamagadhi language) can derive from Sanskrit sūkta, but hardly from sūtra.

The Pali form of the word, sutta is used exclusively to refer to the scriptures of the early Pali Canon, the only texts recognized by Theravada Buddhism as canonical.

Imee Ooi (pronounce as English "E-ME WOO --E"^{[needs Chinese IPA]} (connected) - Ch: 黃慧音, pinyin: Huáng Huìyīn, which means HUANG-Yellow - HUI-Wisdom - YIN-Sound/Music, being her original name by birth) is a Malaysian music producer, composer, arranger and vocalist who brings traditional Buddhist chants, mantras and dharanis (typically from the Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan or Mandarin languages) into sung versions with accompanying musical scores. She also is a classical pianist by training.

Ooi is the musical director and composer of two highly-acclaimed stage musicals; Siddhartha and Above Full Moon, and is currently working on a musical entitled Jewel of Tibet. The musical is set during the Tang Dynasty and is about a Tang princess who marries a Tibetan king and how she brings Buddhism to Tibet.

Imee Ooi established I.M.M Musicworks in 1997, and to date has released over 20 albums.

Antony Mark David Gormley OBE RA (born 30 August 1950) is a British sculptor. His best known works include the Angel of the North, a public sculpture in the North of England, commissioned in 1994 and erected in February 1998, Another Place on Crosby Beach near Liverpool, and Event Horizon, a multi-part site installation which premiered in London in 2007, and in 2010 around Madison Square in New York City.

Early life[link]

The youngest of seven children born to a German mother and an Irish father,^[1] Gormley grew up in a wealthy Roman Catholic^[2] family living in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire.^[1] He attended Ampleforth College, a Benedictine boarding school in Yorkshire,^[1] before reading archaeology, anthropology and the history of art at Trinity College, Cambridge, from 1968 to 1971.^[1] He travelled to India and Sri Lanka to learn more about Buddhism between 1971 and 1974.^[1] Attending at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and Goldsmiths in London from 1974, he completed his studies with a postgraduate course in sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London, between 1977 and 1979.

Gormley's career began with a solo exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1981. Almost all of his work takes the human body as its subject, with his own body used in many works as the basis for metal casts.

Gormley describes his work as "an attempt to materialise the place at the other side of appearance where we all live."^[3] Many of his works are based on molds taken from his own body, or "the closest experience of matter that I will ever have and the only part of the material world that I live inside."^[3] His work attempts to treat the body not as an object but a place and in making works that enclose the space of a particular body to identify a condition common to all human beings. The work is not symbolic but indexical — a trace of a real event of a real body in time.

Gormley won the Turner Prize in 1994 with Field for the British Isles. He was later quoted as saying that he was "embarrassed and guilty to have won — it's like being a Holocaust survivor. In the moment of winning there is a sense the others have been diminished. I know artists who've been seriously knocked off their perches through disappointment."^[4]

The 2006 Sydney Biennale featured Gormley's Asian Field, an installation of 180,000 small clay figurines crafted by 350 Chinese villagers in five days from 100 tons of red clay.^{[citation needed]} The appropriation of others' works caused minor controversy, with some of the figurines being stolen in protest.^{[citation needed]} Also in 2006, the burning of Gormley's 25-metre high The Waste Man formed the zenith of the Margate Exodus.^{[citation needed]}

In 2007, Gormley's Event Horizon, consisting of 31 life-size and anatomically-correct casts of his body, four in cast iron and 27 in fiberglass, was installed on top of prominent buildings along London's South Bank, and was later installed in locations around New York City's Madison Square in 2010. Gormley said of the New York site that "Within the condensed environment of Manhattan's topography, the level of tension between the palpable, the perceivable and the imaginable is heightened because of the density and scale of the buildings" and that in this context, the project should "activate the skyline in order to encourage people to look around. In this process of looking and finding, or looking and seeking, one perhaps re-assess one's own position in the world and becomes aware of one's status of embedment."^[5] Critic Howard Halle said of it that "Using distance and attendant shifts of scale within the very fabric of the city, [Event Horizon] creates a metaphor for urban life and all the contradictory associations – alienation, ambition, anonymity, fame – it entails."^[5]

In July 2009, Gormley presented One & Other, a Fourth Plinth Commission, an invitation for members of the public, chosen by lot, to spend one hour on the vacant plinth in Trafalgar Square, London.^[6] This "living art" happening initially attracted much media attention. It even became a topic of discussion on the long-running BBC radio drama series The Archers, with Gormley set to make an appearance as himself.^[7]

Gormley has been a Royal Academician since 2003 Trustee of the British Museum since 2007. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, an honorary doctor of the University of Cambridge and a fellow of Trinity and Jesus Colleges, Cambridge. In October 2010, he and 100 other leading artists signed an open letter to the Culture Minister Jeremy Hunt protesting against cutbacks in the arts.^[8]

On 13 March 2011, Gormley was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for the set design for Babel (Words) at Sadler's Wells in collaboration with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet.^[9]

Tiff Lacey also known as Tiffany Lacey (born c. 1986) is a singer/songwriter from Crayford, Kent, England, and the vocalist behind many trance and house hits. Except for her vocal abilities, she's also known for the fact that she often writes lyrics that differ considerably from the standard themes in the genre.^[1]

Singing career[link]

Tiff Lacey started singing when she was 16 years old. A few years later she began working as a backing singer to the band "Falling Man". They recorded an album and gigged regularly until they eventually disbanded. Then she started fronting a blues/rock band touring locally in the South East. However, she felt the need to develop her songwriting capabilities in her own right, so she left the band, but yet teamed up with one of its members.They recorded several songs and had interest from both Virgin and EMI. But unfortunately they broke up soon after, because they were not able to capitalize upon the record company's interest. Deciding to change direction, Tiff Lacey joined the "Frankenstein’s Baby", an indie/folk band. They wrote and recorded several songs, gained large fan base and were reviewed various times in musical press around the country. Playing regularly at the legendary "Mean Fiddler", Tiff Lacey felt that the other members were not as driven as her in seeking chart success, so she left, to reflect on the direction her career should eventually take.

And then her breakthrough in the club scene happened. Her demo was chosen among many by Paul Oakenfold and he invited her to record the vocals for his track "Hypnotised", which became a worldwide hit in 2002. It was then followed by "In Your Hands" with Redd Square which resulted another success and by M-Box's "Kiss In Shadows", which was remixed by Tiesto. In 2003 she also provided vocals for The Thrillseekers' track "Affinity". Her fame was established in 2004 when she was included in three tracks from ATB's album No Silence, all three of which became hits, especially "Ecstasy" which is still ATB's biggest hit to date. She would later work with him again for the albums Seven Years: 1998-2005 (2005) and Future Memories (2009). In 2005 she recorded vocals for Filo & Peri's techno hit "Dance With A Devil", which was remixed by Serge Devant and DJ Shog. That year saw her teaming up with Headstrong (aka Don Jackson). They recorded numerous tracks together which were released through the years. The hits among them are "Close Your Eyes" (2005), "The Truth" (2006) and "Symphony Of Soul" (2007). Lacey got in touch with Jackson thanks to another longtime collaborator and popular name in the EDM industry - Matt Darey (who contributed a remix for "Close Your Eyes"), with whom she recorded the successful track "Always", which was followed by "Sum Of All Fears" (2007) and "Into The Blue" (2010). Always in 2005 she did her first collaboration with Flash Brothers called "Faith In Love" which received support from DJs like Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, Markus Schulz and became Flash Brothers' main hit until then. Lacey later recorded again for them in 2007 ("Stay") and in 2011 she sang the title track for their album "Heaven's Gate".

In 2006 she recorded for the first time with Cosmic Gate. The tune called "Should've Known" was included on their album Earth Mover and was also released as a single with remixes by Wippenberg, Jonas Steur a.k.a. Estuera and DJ Delicious, receiving big success. Wippenberg wanted Lacey for the track "Promised Land" the next year, which was remixed by Nic Chagall.

In 2007 Tiff Lacey teamed up with Russian DJ Bobina for a collaboration track called "Where Did You Go", which was included in his album "Again". The track was remixed by another popular name, Dutch DJ First State. The remix received massive support from DJs such as Armin Van Buuren, which led to a collaboration between First State and Lacey called "Where Do We Go", included on his album "Time Frame".

In 2008 Lacey recorded two tracks with trance duo Matt Abbott and Chris Chambers a.k.a. Abbott & Chambers titled "Where Are You" and "Strange Liaison". The tracks were released with remixes by Nitrous Oxide, Cressida, Carl B, Dennis Sheperd, David & Carr, Onova, Allan O' Marshall and Karl G. These tunes established her fame in the Uplifting trance genre, after being included mainly on Progressive trance and Dance before that. The same year she also did "Don't Be Afraid" with Michael Badal and "The Sweetest Sound" with Nick Murray both of which became hits and are considered signature tracks of hers. Overall in 2008 (only) Tiff Lacey was included on more than 30 releases.

Her collaboration track with Tenishia called "Burning From The Inside" won the award Best Dance Production 2008 at the Malta Music Awards.^[2]

She wrote a vocal electronic album with Huw Williams in 2007 and it was released in 2008 under their alias name Rubikon and titled "Wonderland". The album featured 11 original recordings. Three of them, "Thing Called Love", "Why Keep On" and "Telephone" were released as singles with remixes by Morgan Page and Hakan Ludvigson, amongst others.

Even though she's mainly considered a Trance singer, however, Tiff Lacey is often wanted for House music collaborations as well. Some of her highlights in this genre include: "Clockworks" with Amex, Natlife and Purepath (2008), "Dreaming" with DJ Zya (2009), "Sweet 17" with Tash (2009), "Beds" with Chus Liberata (2010), "As We Ride" with The Henchmen (2011) , "Perfect World" with Pagano (2011) and "Darkest Hours" with Fergus Keogh (2012).

Tiff Lacey's first solo single (she only had one solo song included on Ibiza compilation before that) - a piano ballad called "Show Me The Way" was released on 14 December 2009, with remix package provided by Ivan Spell and Gabriel Lukosz. It was re-released in 2011 with a reworked version of the Ivan Spell remix.

In January 2010 "I Know" with George Acosta was released. The remix of the tune by Beat Service was played on A State Of Trance and featured on numerous other podcasts.^[3]

In April 2010, Tiff Lacey signed with label Loverush Digital for the release of her solo album. Later in that year she did a special appearance on Matt Darey's Nocturnal radio show where a 1 hour guest vocal set consisting entirely of her hits was played, including comments by herself between every track.^[4]

In February 2011, her track with Aly & Fila called "Paradise" was released as a single on Future Sound of Egypt to good reviews, being played on ASOT.^[5]

On 31 January 2011 the singer shared the official video of the first single from her upcoming full-length studio album "iVIVA!" called "Take Me Away" on her Facebook page. Later on the same day Mark "Loverush" Schneider announced the single's upcoming release. It was released on March 9, 2011 on iTunes with remixes by Tom Noize, Loverush UK, Darren Flinders and Stereojackers.

On May 8, 2011, Tiff Lacey presented on Facebook an official video to another song from her upcoming album - the ballad "Mother To Daughter". The video was shot in Dorset and in her home. Her daughter also appears in it.

There was an album launch party which took place in London on August 12, 2011. The event included live performances by Lacey and Paul Stevens^{[disambiguation needed ]} and guest DJ sets by Loverush UK, Stuart J and Matt Emulsion.

Her album "¡Viva!" came out on iTunes on August 15, 2011 via Loverush Digital. Among the main record producers in it are George Popa, Matt Bukovski, Nick Murray and Loverush UK!. On the very next day, on August 16, American DJ/producer Ryan Farish released his album "Upon a Dream" which included 3 collaborations with Tiff Lacey (the title track being one of them). The album received a worldwide success and for Lacey musically it was an experience similar to those she had with ATB.

In January, 2012, Lacey's collaboration with Italian DJ Vito De Santis aka Vitodito called "Forbidden Love" was released via Neuroscience Deep label to great reviews. The Domenico Cascarino & Luca Lombardi remix of the track reached #3 on Beatport Chillout Chart.

Her second single with The Henchmen, "Dancing Into Day" became an immediate success after the original mix was released on "Housesession Miami WMC 2012" in March. She participated in the WMC 2012 compilations with one more track - "Perfect World" with Pagano, in remix by Ralphi Rosario.

On April 10, 2012, the singer shared with her fans in Facebook the music video for her song "Speak Your Name" (from "¡Viva!")

Her tracks "Perfect World" with Pagano and "Little Heart" with Illitheas, which already gained lots of attention and airplay, will have full single releases soon as well. She has also recorded new tracks with Airwave, Philip Aelis and Robert Lyttle, amongst others.

Besides her singing talent, Tiff Lacey is also a writer and painter. She wrote almost all of her song lyrics. Her themes include various subjects, like love, romance, joy, dreams, fears, introspection, sorrow, God and, especially in the last few years, a consistent part of her lyrics are describing motherhood.

In October 2011 Tiff Lacey, in collaboration with fellow performer Antonia Lucas, founded the non-profit organization VSA (Vocalist Songwriters Alliance). The organization's mission is to defend and support the business and creative rights of the vocalists, especially in the EDM sector of the industry, which have been strongly disrespected over the years by several DJ's.
