In Episode 3 we look at the concept of warp drives, a theoretical type of spaceship propulsion that warps spacetime to allow faster than light travel. We discuss the basic concept and the scientific and technological hurdles to developing it, along with clearing up many of the myths about it.

Uno de los físicos más destacados de México a nivel internacional, Migue Alcubierre investiga en las áreas de relatividad numérica y agujeros negros. Es creador de la "Métrica de Alcubierre", un modelo matemático que plantea la posibilidad de viajar más rápido que la luz a partir de la deformación del tiempo-espacio, una idea que en el campo de la física revoluciona y complementa la teoría de la relatividad de Albert Einstein.
Con un doctorado de la Universidad de Gales en Cardiff, Reino Unido, ingresó como investigador adjunto al Instituto Max Plack para Física Gravitacional, en Potsdam, Alemania. Posteriormente ingresó al Instituto de Ciencias Nucleares de la UNAM donde actualmente es investigador Titular "C" de tiempo completo.

Michio Kaku dubbed Alcubierre's notion a "passport to the universe." It takes advantage of a quirk in the cosmological code that allows for the expansion and contraction of space-time, and could allow for hyper-fast travel between interstellar destinations. Essentially, the empty space behind a starship would be made to expand rapidly, pushing the craft in a forward direction — passengers would perceive it as movement despite the complete lack of acceleration.
Scientists speculate that such a drive could result in "speeds" that could take a spacecraft to Alpha Centauri in a mere two weeks — even though the system is 4.3 light-years away.

Alcubierre
Alcubierre is a municipality located in the province of Huesca, Aragon, Spain. According to the 2004 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 439 inhabitants.
This town gives its name to the Sierra de Alcubierre (highest point 822 m) that rises in the west, about 3 km away.

Uno de los físicos más destacados de México a nivel internacional, Migue Alcubierre investiga en las áreas de relatividad numérica y agujeros negros. Es creador de la "Métrica de Alcubierre", un modelo matemático que plantea la posibilidad de viajar más rápido que la luz a partir de la deformación del tiempo-espacio, una idea que en el campo de la física revoluciona y complementa la teoría de la relatividad de Albert Einstein. Con un doctorado de la Universidad de Gales en Cardiff, Reino Unido, ingresó como investigador adjunto al Instituto Max Plack para Física Gravitacional, en Potsdam, Alemania. Posteriormente ingresó al Instituto de Ciencias Nucleares de la UNAM donde actualmente es investigador Titular "C" de tiempo completo. -

Michio Kaku dubbed Alcubierre's notion a "passport to the universe." It takes advantage of a quirk in the cosmological code that allows for the expansion and contraction of space-time, and could allow for hyper-fast travel between interstellar destinations. Essentially, the empty space behind a starship would be made to expand rapidly, pushing the craft in a forward direction — passengers would perceive it as movement despite the complete lack of acceleration.
Scientists speculate that such a drive could result in "speeds" that could take a spacecraft to Alpha Centauri in a mere two weeks — even though the system is 4.3 light-years away.
