Varnam true to its meaning 'colour', adds variety and vigour to any traditional Bharathanatyam repertoire. The dancer's dynamism and handling of the intricate and complex rhythmic footworks are visible in a varnam. The Abhinaya or the art of story telling is more vivid and elaborate in a Varnam. This Varnam depicted is about a girl yearning for the sight of the ever-enchanting Lord Krishna. The Naayika waits for Lord Krishna's arrival after adorning herself with exquisite ornaments. She says -- ' Oh! the lotus-eyed lord! You who played pranks with the Gopikas by stealing butter from their homes and dirtying their clothes.' The Naayika calls out for the Lord in innumerous ways longing for him day and night. She says I see ONLY YOU in everything that I see. "Oh Lord!
