k where do i begin?!!
this summer has been incredibly busy, from vancouver, to miami, to sydney, to hawaii, to niagara falls (haha k this is only a 200km drive) shooting weddings, teaching workshops, shooting corporate promos + commercials and of course shooting more weddings.
things are taking longer then expected but b4 i launch my website + 2010 highlights; i want to quickly share with you the first ever myw multi day south asian wedding that i attended this past weekend.
while i've had the oppurtunity to shoot hindu and sikh indian weddings in the past this was the first time i've shot a 5 day (yes 5 day) Ismaili wedding; and i sure had a TON of learning to do. I was up with farzana + shameer @ their place (luckly they live 2 mins away from me!! hehe) till 5 am, after a 4 hour pre-wedding consultation to learn exactly all of the different rituals, ceremonies, scarves, certain drinks that have cultural/religious/mythological significance to them and their culture. needless to say my head pretty much exploded but i was pumpppppeed to make this happen.
and while its hard to not notice, farzana + shameer are obviously a stunning looking couple, but they are also super warm, down to earth, approachable, caring and just all around awesome!!! their bridal party, friends and family were supppper amazing as well.
i REALALLLLLLYY love you guys!!! thank you for having me document your wedding.
TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
- being a multi-day event requiring many symmetrical ceremonies happening @ the same time, I contracted my internationally acclaimed wedding cinematographer/educator/best friend konrad czystowski to help me shoot the events that i couldnt personally shoot myself due to logistical limitations. one of the most important lessons l learned from internationally acclaimed ray roman while teaching @ his workshop in miami a month ago; was that he stressed how important it is to build solid relationships with great, honest and genuine ppl who can help us in our journey in this industry. in turn, konrad brings me to shoot a wedding with him in hawaii... WOOHOO!!!
now to give you an idea of how much work was involved in this weddng, here is a breakdown.
-WEDNESDAY henna ceremony - shot by myw + 1 5D mkii. the ceremony was 6 hours.
-THURSDAY henna ceremony for the bridesmaids + women from the grooms side of the family. this is the day where the siblings of both the bride and groom goto the mosque and fill up the guri with holy water and bring it back home for the bride and groom to bathe in it. various other ceremonies (egging of the groom, eating of butter chicken (heheh), more to be explained below) also occur on thursday as well. i would say this was another 7 hours or so. both Konrad and myself used one Canon 5D mkII to cover everything. konrad @ groom's house while I was at the brides.
-FRIDAY this was the day the bride and groom, as well as both their respective families get to finally meet and see eachother, this was @ a reception gathering. I shot this mostly myself with Konrad helping out for 3 hours. Total amount of time I would say I was shooting on and off was another 10 hours.
-SATURDAY this was the break day where no shooting was involved and I basically went through a good 30 hours of footage and edited + transcoded between multiple machines straight an entire day (and night). Konrad's pre sequenced and rough-cut timelines were a huge help in making this possible.
-SUNDAY I marched on the big wedding day on SUNDAY without a single second of sleep. Yes I almost cried in agony from editing during the middle of the night. Nevertheless, Konrad was at my house 7:45am, and the worlds busiest/most talented 16 year old boy wonder cinematographer Mark Klassen arrived too, and my trusty protege from scratch and Troy Turgano also helped with the editing duties all day. This wedding day ran from 8 am to about 1am, and had 2 sets of preps, 2 first meetings, 2 photosessions, 1 wedding ceremony and 1 wedding reception.
this piece was shot entirely with Canon 5DmkII's in 24p mode.
there is no doubt that the 5Dmkii currently provides the highest value/dollar HDSLR in event filmmaking industry today. it is better then the 7D due to it's full frame capabilities, cleaner low light and richer color reproduction. when i compare the 5d to the 1dmk4; I do notice that the 1dmk4 is better in low light, and the 1dmk4's crop factor is better in certain cases (removing mild vignetting in some lenses as well as removing the less sharp image characteristics @ the edges of an image); but for the price of a single 1dmk4, i can purchases 2 5dmkii's. it's a complete no brainer.
- as both konrad and I taught in sydney australia 2 weeks ago and did a

THE ISLAND TAPES
Cockatoo Island is not only the largest isle in Sydney Harbour; it has one of the most colourful histories. Prior to being home to the first ever SbA Pro/Am Grand Final it was an imperial prison, an industrial school, a reformatory, a jail and was the site of one of Australia’s largest boat building docks. Cockatoo is also closely aligned with the legend of bushranger Captain Thunderbolt, who was one of two prisoners to ever escape the island. Their escape was aided by Thunder's lover Mary Ann Bugg who swam through the harbours shark-infested waters to save them. Thunderbolt was given his name whilst on the job: during one of his robberies he knocked on a door as a clap of thunder and lightening ignited the skies. The victim asked who was at the door to which he replied: “Thunderbolt”. Of course prior to the intervention of colonialism Cockatoo was no doubt a sacred stomping ground for indigenous tribes and possibly the odd cockatoo.
During event lead up there were several trips out to the island. My first trip was with Cuzz and we were in charge of surface checks on the heritage-listed ground. After a serious run in with an egg-guarding screech-burger of a sea gull, and several heated discussions regarding the logistical problems of holding a comp on the island, we thought we would calm our nerves with a beverage. Whilst ordering the edge was taking off by a gruff but jovial chinless wonder of a Hungarian tuck-shop manager. He was the kind of odd character you would find in an old Bond film. His vibe somehow smoothed the situation and mid bev we ran back over to the site and finally sussed how the course could work.
Over the months of prep that followed it was no doubt that Logistics Manager Steve Murphy went through the most trials and tribulations. At one point he was heard ordering some fluorescent inflatable tower lights over the phone: “So how big are they mate?“… (pause)… “Oh so about as big as a fat person?” The attention to detail was phenomenal. So how do you get a skate course built on an island you ask? Every element had to come by barge: 24 of them! The course design and construction was a combination of efforts between SbA, Convic and Shane Serena’s Revolution crews. The course housed elements such as the bank to ledge to bank, the out rail (based on Perth’s swing out bar), the doorstop slappy kickers, the wheel chair ramp and the Sydney Harbour Bridge China Bank.
Come December the 10th the stage was set and it sure was a doozy. The Island was held in the last days of the Outpost Project street art festival. I pretended that the isle was decorated just for us. The dilapidated industrial beauty was punctuated with giant rusted swinging soy sauce fishes, a cockatoo mural made out of plastic cups, a life size replica of Kid Zoom’s house, Lister-painted balloons, ceramic washing machines and murals n pieces galore. Of course the skating was next level. Everyone goes on about the level. But you can kind of understand when the level is on this plain. I mean the technical proficiency of the current pros and top ams is light years beyond where we thought people could ever take their coordination. The top guys in Oz are all on par with (and make up some of) the top internationals, and nothing highlighted it more than The Island. The 35 peoples who were invited to the comp included some vets, some freshies and some of the world’s top shredders.

Beatz - Divergences & Contradictions of Electronic Music
Support us at: http://www.indiegogo.com/beatz/x/1624226
HOW IT STARTED
My name is Eduardo De La Calle, and I have been making music and DJing for around 15 years, playing in many cities around Europe. About two years ago, I started two labels, including Analog Solutions, a vinyl only electronic music label.
I am now developing a new Project: a documentary on electronic music called BEATZ. The idea of the documentary came to me while travelling during one of my shows in Berlin. I realized that I had been in electronic music for so many years but I still had unanswered question and lot of preoccupations about the industry I was moving in.
This led me to buy a camera and with the help of a few friends, try to interview as many people as I Could, whenever I could. Camera on hand, I decided to find out more and get some answers from Paris to Berlin, Amsterdam to Barcelona, Tokyo to London and all the way to the island of Ibiza.
There was no money, no budget and I used the opportunity of each of my travels to DJ to meet as many people involved in this industry, behind the scenes finding out about the divergences and contradictions of electronic music nowadays.
My preoccupations and doubts have resulted in more than 150 people being interviewed and compiled in an audiovisual experience.
WHAT IS THE INTENTION
With this documentary I intend to give to the public a general overview of electronic music through the interviews of the different actors shaping the scene. From artists, distributors, shops, labels, bookers, and club and festival promoters: all the people who make this industry exist.
I hope to take viewer on a journey about electronic and techno music, from its humble beginnings to its actual state, where it is much accepted and fully part of our society. The documentary intends to tackle questions such as its impact on society, the influence of technology, the image conveyed by the DJs and the industry etc… all of this through the contributions of the people interviewed.
The documentary has been written with the help of Daniel Arasanz, writer, director and producer of “Venid a las cloacas: La historia de la Banda Trapera del Rio” which won two prizes at the Inedit Film Festival in Barcelona. (http://tllg.net/2cjh)
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
This project has been done without budget at all, only relying on the travels and the connections that I have developed over time and the help of friends that were involved in the documentary be it the scriptwriter, the producers (coordinate interviews in every cities, logistics etc…)
As we finish up the pre-production phase, we need your help. We will need financial support in order to compensate the work and time spent by the editor and post-production technicians to finalize the project.
HOW YOUR MONEY WILL HELP
In detailed we would require financial support to compensate:
Editing and post-production
Scriptwriter
Subtitles & translation
Design (marketing collaterals)
Rights and clearing assistance
General Filming extra costs
Pledge production
Indiegogo and Paypal fees
