Guinea's Current Situation, ECOWAS mediators kicked out
Guinea’s military leaders say they will not let deposed President Alpha Conde seek exile, after regional mediators attempted to mount pressure to secure his release following a coup earlier this month.
The statement on Friday came after the West African regional bloc known as ECOWAS met Colonel Mamady Doumbouya in Conakry.
Where was ECOWAS when Alpha Conde was changing the Constitution? Where was ECOWAS when Alpha Conde wanted to run for a third term? Where was ECOWAS when the people of Guinea were suffering injustice, inequality, where was ECOWAS?

What's next for Guinea after the coup? | Inside Story
Guinea has a long history of instability and military takeovers.
The West African nation now faces political uncertainty after elite soldiers overthrew President Alpha Conde.
In 2010, He became the first democratically elected leader in Guinea since its independence from France.
He amended the constitution to allow him stay in power beyond the two-term limit and won a third term in a disputed election.
That move sparked widespread protests and his opponents accused him of veering towards authoritarian rule.
On Sunday, he appeared in a video surrounded by guards after heavy gunfire was heard near the presidential palace in the capital Conakry.
Armed soldiers announced on television the president was detained, then dissolved the constitution and imposed a nationwide curfew.
So can m...

Guinea's current situation after one week of military rule
Guinea's junta plans to release ousted president Alpha #Condé, its spokesperson says.
The ruling military was put under diplomatic pressure by the African Union and the West African regional bloc ECOWAS over last weekend's coup.
A delegation from West Africa's main political and economic bloc arrived in Guinea's capital Conakry in hopes of steering the junta that ousted President Alpha Conde towards a civilian-led, constitutional regime.
#Guinea has the world's largest reserves of #bauxite, which is used to making aluminum. Mining is the main driver of the economy.
The news of the coup drove the price of aluminum skyrocketing to its highest level in 13 years this week, causing companies to be concerned about the commodities supply chain.
Doumbouya has promised to maintain continuity i...

Army seizes power in Guinea, detains President Alpha Conde | DW News
Soldiers in the West African state of Guinea are holding longtime president Alpha Conde - and have declared a nationwide curfew. Members of the international community - including former colonial power France and the United States - have condemned the putsch. And the UN Secretary-General has called for the president's release.
It's been 24 hours of uncertainty and turmoil in Guinea since the coup began. It started in the Kaloum neighborhood of the capital Conakry, where the presidential palace is located.
Gunfire erupted and fighting broke out near the presidential palace in Conakry early Sunday morning. Special forces say they ousted President Alpha Conde and took control of the government.
The coup leaders say President Conde is unharmed. They released a video showing him in their custo...

Guinea has a population of 12.4million who occupy an area of 245,857km2.
If you are new here, welcome, be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so you don’t miss any of our videos.
The country was at the core of the 2014 Ebola outbreak which still has an impact on the socio-economic health of the country. Human rights in Guinea remain a controversial issue as in 2011 the United States government claimed that torture by security forces, and abuse of women and children were ongoing abuses of human rights. Given this small country has two other more prominent countries with similar names like it, it is often not the first country people are checking on, hence here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about Guinea.
1. Part of Several Empires
Guinea was once part of several great empires. The Sosso kingdom briefly flourished between 12th to 13th centuriesin the resulting void but the Mali Empire came to prominence when Soundiata Kéïta defeated the Sosso ruler Soumangourou Kanté at the Battle of Kirina in 1235. The Mali Empire was ruled by Mansa or Emperors, the most famous being Kankou Moussa, who made a famous hajj to Mecca in 1324. Shortly after his reign the Mali Empire began to decline and was ultimately supplanted by its vassal states in the 15th century. The most successful of these was the Songhai Empire, which expanded its power from about 1460 and eventually surpassed the Mali Empire in both territory and wealth. After the fall of the major West African empires, various kingdoms existed in what is now Guinea.
2. The Nation is Mostly Muslim
The population of Guinea is approximately 85% Muslim and 8% Christian, with 7% adhering to indigenous religious beliefs. Much of the population, both Muslim and Christian, also incorporate indigenous African beliefs into their outlook. The vast majority of Guinean Muslims are adherent to the Sunni tradition of Islam, of Maliki school of jurisprudence, influenced with Sufism. There is also a Shi'a community in Guinea while the Christian groups include Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Baptists, Seventh-day Adventists, and Evangelical groups. Jehovah's Witnesses are active in the country and recognized by the Government. There is a small Baháʼí Faith community. There are small numbers of Hindus, Buddhists, and traditional Chinese religious groups among the expatriate community.
3. There was Religious Strive in Guinea
Most African countries have huge religious and ethnic diversities and are mostly religious tolerant to one another but that was not the case of Guinea. There were three days of ethno-religious fighting in the city of Nzerekore in July 2013. Fighting between ethnic Kpelle, who are Christian or animist, and ethnic Konianke, who are Muslims and close to the larger Malinke ethnic group, left at least 54 dead. The dead included people who were killed with machetes and burned alive. The violence ended after the Guinea military imposed a curfew, and President Conde made a televised appeal for calm.
4. The Small Nation is One of the Most Diverse in Africa
The population of Guinea comprises about 24 ethnic groups and the Mandinka, also known as Mandingo comprise 24.8% of the population and are mostly found in eastern Guinea concentrated around the Kankan and Kissidougou prefectures. The Fulas or Fulani comprise 40.1% of the population and are mostly found in the Futa Djallon region. The Soussou, comprising 15.8% of the population, are predominantly in western areas around the capital Conakry, Forécariah, and Kindia. Smaller ethnic groups make up the remaining 18.3% of the population, including Kpelle, Kissi, Zialo, Toma and others. Approximately 10,000 non-Africans live in Guinea, predominantly Lebanese, French, and other Europeans.
5. The Official Language is French
The official language of Guinea is French but the most widely spoken language is Pulaar, which was spoken by almost 40% of the population. French, the official language of Guinea, is the main language of communication in schools, in government administration, and the media, but more than twenty-four indigenous languages are also spoken. The second most spoken language is the Mandinka language, which was spoken by about 30% of the population and the third most spoken language is the Susu language, which was spoken by about 18% of the population. Other languages spoken in Guinea include Koniaka, Kissi, Kpelle, and many more which are spoken by 23% of the population altogether.

So can military coups restore democracy?

Doumbouya has promised to maintain continuity in the mining industry, stating this week that Guinea would "uphold all its commitments (and) mining agreements."

They released a video showing him in their custody. His current location is unknown.
Conde became Guinea's first democratically elected leader in 2010. But to stay in power, he changed the constitution, which limited his time in power, to allow himself a third term in office.
People took to the streets of Conakry to celebrate the military takeover.
The international community is condemning the coup. But it's still unclear how Guinea's political elite will react to Conde's ousting. The mutineers have summoned the current ministers to meet with them, and said a refusal to attend will be considered rebellion.

After a rough few days in Sierra Leone, we have made it onwards to the next West African country of Guinea (Conakry).
It's been a wild 2.5 days here so far, from the challenging roads to the (once again) disgusting corruption and bribery that we had to deal with. But we made it, after 11 LONG hours of driving 150 miles, to the capital of Conakry.
Initially, we had a great time exploring the fish market at sunrise and then getting secret access inside the 2nd biggest mosque in sub Saharan Africa -- but then things quickly turned bad when thousands of policemen (armed with AK47s, helmets and bullet proof vests) stormed the streets in preparation for the riots which have ...

At a summit in Ghana Ecowas leaders also demanded the unconditional release of Guinean President Alpha Condé as well as a "very short" transition period. These demands are the bloc's toughest response yet to the military takeover in Guinea earlier this month. The announcement was made as coup leaders in the country wrapped up a week of consultations with various stakeholders to map out a framework for a transitional government. And it's not just Guinea. Across western and central Africa three more countries have been hit by military takeovers: Mali, Niger and Chad. First Mali, Guine...

GUINEA CONAKRY: Crashs in the FOUTA DJALLON region & Kambadaga waterfalls // EPS. 8
Crashs, waterfalls, and challenging roads: Welcome to the Fouta Djallon region in Guinea - one of my favorite places on this trip so far!
Each country I ever visited I fell in love with – even if it was only for a short minute. But Guinea-Conakry made me fall in love each single second I stayed. Why? Because of its challenges. But also because of its breathtaking beauty, and its untouched nature.
After crossing the border of Guinea-Bissau to Guinea-Conakry at the border post Fulamory, there was already the first surprise waiting: a hand-pulled ferry that brought us over the river. Little did we know that the real challenges were still waiting: A very bad, sandy road - which ended up in two crashs.
The next days we headed torwards Labé, the capital of the region Fouta Djallon. The highl...

Major ethnic group in Guinea
The West African country of Guinea used to be known as French Guinea having been colonized by the French. It is sometimes called Guinea-Conakry to distinguish it from Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial-Guinea. There are about 24 known ethnic groups in the country and its capital Conakry is the most ethnically diverse town in the country. Let's look at some of the main ethnic groups and what makes them unique.

To Conakry, Guinea and Beyond... ok, just to Conakry
Today I leave the town of Labe in the High Guinea region and move on to the capital of Guinea: Conakry. I'm expecting Conakry to be a bit of a challenge. The laws about taking photos in the city are pretty strict and the military/police are meant to be some of the most corrupt in the world.
On this edition, I simple show up to town, but over the next couple days I deal with all sorts of problems in Conakry.

7 Fascinating Facts about Guinea
Let’s talk about Guinea. First and foremost, there are four countries that contain the name Guinea: 3 in Africa and one in Oceania. Why? Because Europeans called a big chunk of West Africa simply Guinea and the 3 modern African countries are in that region. And the Oceanian Papua New Guinea got its name because Europeans thought the people there look like the people from Guinea.

Guinea coup makers name army governors, promise ‘unity’ gov’t
Guinea's coup leaders have replaced regional governors with military officers and released political detainees after they deposed President Alpha Conde on Sunday.
Coup leader Mamady Doumbouya promised a “new era for governance and economic development” but did not say when or how this would happen.
The bloc of West African nations or ECOWAS will discuss the coup in Guinea in a virtual session.

Initially, we had a great time exploring the fish market at sunrise and then getting secret access inside the 2nd biggest mosque in sub Saharan Africa -- but then things quickly turned bad when thousands of policemen (armed with AK47s, helmets and bullet proof vests) stormed the streets in preparation for the riots which have been destroying the city.
We quickly ran (literally) back to our hotel and called it a day. We didn't leave the hotel anytime afterwards.
This region of the world is tough to travel across, especially in your own vehicle. At each of the dozens and dozens of police checkpoints, we are always pulled over to show our car papers/insurance, and even after we do correctly, the corrupt police will find ANY reason to pick on us (often times, making up some random law) until we pay them off. It makes me sad.
BUT I HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS (in case you missed yesterday's video)! THE SIERRA LEONE GOVERNMENT SAW MY VIDEO ABOUT US GETTING SCAMMED AND THEY WENT TO THE BORDER TO ARREST THE 3 GUYS AND NOW THEY ARE IN PRISON! One step closer to making this region a safer place to visit for everyone.

First Mali, Guinea's direct neighbor: Since last August there have been two successful coups in the country: Malian Forces mutinied in August 2020 forcing 75-year-old President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta to resign, after months of protests. Then, in May of this year, another coup: The Army stripped the next President, 71-year-old Bah N'daw, of power after just nine months in office.Vice President Colonel Assimi Goïta, seized power. He's just 37, making him one of Africa's youngest leaders.Further east in Niger, the 2021 election of Mohamed Bazoum was the first democratic handover of power in the country's post-independence history. But his inauguration looked to be in jeopardy in March when heavy gunfire broke out close to the President's official residence, in the capital Niamey. A rebel military unit had tried to reach the palace - only to be beaten back by the Presidential Guard.Within hours, the government declared the coup thwarted and Bazoum was inaugurated two days later. And Niger's neighbor Chad saw the military seize power in April this year after the death of longtime President Idriss Deby. The army installed one of their own, Deby's son, Mahamat Idriss Déby, as the new president - ignoring and repealing the Constitution, and suspending Parliament.

The highlands of Fouta Djallon are often called the watertower - or in French: 'le chateau d'eau' , of West Africa. Sometimes people as well refer to the region as the 'Switzerland of West Africa'. We found out why on a excursion to Kambadaga waterfalls.
Join the journey in through the Fouta Djallon region of Guinea and find out, how it feels to ride in 40+ degrees, on sandy roads or when standing on a majestic waterfall!
//NOTE: videos were recorded before I had a Youtube Channel - initially used for my Instagram stories. That's the reason for the close ups of my face - they were recorded vertically. I still decided to use them - that's the authentic footage I have and I can't change that anymore. Remember: I just started out with filming and cutting - its a learning curve and far from perfect! If you mind seeing my nose hair every now and then, I can highly recommend you to skip this part of the journey and join again when I will publish my next trips after the country Benin with hopefully improved footage!
// Welcome to the journey! I am Lea, a journalist and author and I want to take you with me on a motorcycle overloading adventure to all the wild and beautiful places in the world!
//Join the first stage of my trip around Africa along the coast of Westafrica through 12 countries: Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin.
Time of the journey: November 2019 to Feburary 2020
// I circumnavigated the world solo from 2016-2017 and now I am going to all other places I have not seen yet. Now on the channel: my motorcycle trip around africa/ the first stage of the journey through westafrica.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Guinea.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. The region was called Guinea broadly when it was first "discovered" by Europeans, before the colonization. If you look at the map, Europeans had already started to name specific parts of "Guinea" individually: Gold Coast , Wheat Coast, Slave Coast, Ivory Coast, etc. When Europeans were first exploring western Africa, they gave broad regional names. Specifics got filled in later.
2. The Niger River, which starts in the densely forested southeast highlands of Guinea, is the principal river of western Africa. It is the third longest river of Africa. Its name possibly comes from the Tuareg phrase 'her n gheren', meaning 'river of rivers'. This name, shortened to ngher, is a local name used along the middle stretch of the river near Timbuktu, Mali.
3. The land that is now Guinea belonged to a series of African empires until France colonized it in the 1890s, and made it part of French West Africa. Guinea declared its independence from France on 2 October 1958. From independence until the presidential election of 2010, Guinea was governed by a number of autocratic rulers.
4. Conakry, the capital of Guinea, is apparently one of the wettest capitals in the world with an incredible 3.7 metres of rain per year!
5. Guinea boasts of spectacular landscape with lush and verdant rainforests and plenty of wildlife in the south. The waterfall-rich Fouta Djalon Plateau in the west has breathtaking scenery.
6. The country of Guinea has vast amounts of mineral and agricultural resources, containing approximately 25% of the world’s bauxite reserves, a major component of aluminium. But Guinea's poorly developed infrastructure and rampant corruption ranks the country as the 182nd least developed nation out of 188.
7. The literacy rate of Guinea is one of the lowest in the world: in 2010 it was estimated that only 41% of adults were literate. Primary education is compulsory for 6 years, but most children do not attend for so long, and many do not go to school at all. Children, particularly girls, are kept out of school in order to assist their parents with domestic work or agriculture, or to be married: Guinea has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world.
