Larry Korn (http://www.larrykorn.net) gives and overview of the works of the spectacular Masanobu Fukuoka, author of The One Straw Revolution (http://onestrawrevolution.net)
Larry talks about how Masanobu Fukuoka had three properties: the house in town, the rice field, and the citrus orchard on the hill.
The spectacular thing about the rice fields is that he had rice production typically greater than his neighbors, without using the equipment or chemicals that his neighbors use. And, on top of that, he pulls a crop of barley off of the same land in addition to the massive rice crop. As another bonus, Masanobu Fukuoka's soil gets richer and richer every year.
Up on the hillside, Masanobu Fukuoka plants a variety of things between the trees. He has a thick, lush jungle of herbacious things like vegetables growing between the trees. Tangerines, asian grapefruit, daikon raddish, mustard, acacia trees, buckwheat, mandarin oranges, etc.

A Fukuoka Inspired Permaculture Garden
http://www.permacultureplanet.com
Emilia Hazelip (1938 - February 1, 2003) was an organic Permaculture gardener who was born in Spain and began gardening seriously in the late '60s. A former Merry Prankster and pioneer of the concept of synergistic gardening, her farming methods were inspired by the work of Masanobu Fukuoka.
Where Fukuoka focused most of his attention on orchards and the rice/barley crop rotation, Emilia Hazelip focused on creating and maintaining market gardens of vegetables and herbs.
Emilia Hazelip, who introduced the concept of permaculture to France over a decade ago, drew on many sources as she continued to develop gardens. The work of Permaculturist Marc Bonfils with self-fertile cereal production and the microbiological research of Alan Smith and Elaine Ingham are frequently mentioned.

Fukuoka in Greece (1/3)
http://www.permacultureplanet.com
Follow Japanese legend Masanobu Fukuoka on his 1998 visit to Arnissa in Greece, where he inspires locals young and old in an effort to sow seedballs across 10,000 hectares of rocky Grecian countryside.
Masanobu Fukuoka, who died in 2008 aged 95, is the author of 'The One Straw Revolution', 'The Road back to Nature', and 'The Natural Way of Farming'. He was a pioneer of no-till cultivation, and his Natural Farming system is often referred to as The Fukuoka Method. From the age of 25 he devoted his life to this organic method, which does not require weeding, pesticide or fertiliser. The essence of Fukuoka's method is to reproduce natural conditions as closely as possible, maintaining great emphasis on diversity. Fukuoka re-introduced the ancient technique of 'seed balls', in which a variety of companion plant seeds are mixed together with clay and compost, resulting in a dense crop of smaller but highly productive strong plants.

"if modern agriculture continues to follow the path it's on now, it's finished. The food-growing situation may seem to be in good shape today, but that's just an illusion based on the current availability of petroleum fuels. All the wheat, corn, and other crops that are produced on big farms may be alive and growing, but they're not products of real nature or real agriculture. They're manufactured rather than grown. The Earth isn't producing those things... petroleum is!"

The One Straw Revolution by Masanobu Fukuoka
Watch Beyond 50's book trailer on "The One Straw Revolution" that is narrated by the book's editor Larry Korn. In 1973, he was under the tutelage of his Sensei (teacher), Masanobu Fukuoka, who lived in Shikoku Island, Japan. Korn received a hands-on education in the art of non-cultivation and do-nothing, natural farming. Translated in many languages, Masanobu Fukuoka wrote "The One Straw Revolution," (New York Book Reviews), a classic memoir and guide. You'll learn about his philosophy and the Four Principles of Natural Farming: no cultivation; no chemical fertilizer or prepare compost; no weeding by tillage and herbicides; and no dependence on chemicals. Even though his methods require less labor, it can result in higher yields for your farm or garden. To learn more, visit www.onestrawrevolution.net.
*Produced and edited by Joy and Daniel Davis of Beyond 50 Productions.

I get asked about Fukuoka a lot, so I decided to talk a bit about it... I kind of lost track of where I was going near the end though. Sorry about that. It's been kind of hard to focus on making videos lately, I wasn't going to post anything, but I think that posting SOMETHING will help me get out of this slump, and I can work hard on improving quality of my videos next time.. or something... Iduuuunnoooo.
How are you today? :)

Fukuoka Hakata 福岡 博多 - Amazing Travel Vid! (HD)
Trip to Fukuoka city in Kyushu from Tokyo using Local trains. 2 days of footage in 1.
Fukuoka (福岡市 Fukuoka-shi?) is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture and is situated on the northern shore of the island of Kyushu in Japan.
Voted number 14 in a 2010 poll of the World's Most Livable Cities, Fukuoka is praised for its green spaces in a metropolitan setting.[1] It is the most populous city in Kyushu, followed by Kitakyūshū. It is the largest city and metropolitan area west of Keihanshin. The city was designated on April 1, 1972 by government ordinance. Greater Fukuoka (福岡都市圏), with 2.5 million people (2005 census), is part of the heavily industrialized Fukuoka-Kitakyūshū zone, as well as Northern Kyushu.
As of June 2011, Fukuoka is Japan's 7th largest city, having passed the population of Kyoto, and the first time a city west of the Kinki region has a larger population since Kyoto was established in the 7th century. However, in ancient times, the area near Fukuoka was thought to be perhaps even more influential than the Yamato region.

Fukuoka gets better soil with no-till
http://www.permies.com
Larry Korn spent three years with Masanobu fukuoka and did the translation for the excellent book "One Straw Revolution". He is now a permaculture instructor in Ashland, Oregon.
Larry gives a bit of his background especially as it reflect on his time with Fukuoka. He explains how he studied soil and plant nutrition in college. I think the key point in this video is where he talks about in college how bad plowing is. His college professor says "we just don't know how to grow food any other way". Years pass and he meets Fukuoka. Who has far superior soil and is growing food without plowing.
Larry explains the sustainability of living there. They produced 95% of their own food from an edible food forest.

aquí me enseñó arigato gozaimasu
Yo canté tu bachata aquí en Fukuoka
Pabailar contigo, (pabailar)
se me alegra la nota
Quiero cantar contigo, (quiero)
Pabailar contigo, (pabailar)
se me alegra la nota
Quiero cantar contigo (quiero)
una bachata en Fukuoka
Una bachata en Fukuoka
Sueños, de arena en las olas
Besos, me daba tu boca ;)
Tengo, estrellas y rosas
Niña, cantando en Fukuoka
Pa bailar contigo, (para bailar)
se me alegra la nota
Quiero cantar contigo (quiero)
una bachata en Fukuoka
Una bachata en Fukuoka, (pa soñar contigo)
en el mar las gaviotas
Con tu piel de abrigo
vivir bachata en Fukuoka ;)

Permaculture Seed Balls "The Fukuoka Method"
http://www.permacultureplanet.com
Masanobu Fukuoka was a Japanese farmer who developed what many consider to be a revolutionary method of sustainable agriculture. He is also the author of "The One-Straw Revolution" and several other books examining both his philosophy and his method of farming.
In this short Japanese language video Fukuoka is seen teaching the seed ball making process hands on to a group of enthusiastic students.
