EU wants to put pressure on the US
The NSA surveillance scandal has triggered severe criticism from Europe. Millions of Europeans may have had their phones tapped, including top politicians like German Chancellor Angela Merkel. It puts the EU-US relationship in question and it may have major impacts, not only political but economic. According to media reports, data protection could be included in the transatlantic trade negotiations which could derail the whole project. At the same time EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding is looking at other ways to put pressure on the Americans. Reding wants to see a new common European intelligence service. We talked to British MEP, Claude Moraes, head of the European delegation that went to Washington to seek clarification for the NSA's actions at the end of October, and Mina Andreeva, spokesperson of EU Commissioner Viviane Reding, about the details about these ideas.- published: 08 Nov 2013

'Encrypted services easier to hack than typewriters - for safety go back to basics'
As the international diplomatic crisis over NSA surveillance widens, the US is scrambling to justify its actions. While we're waiting to learn exactly what Obama wanted to hear in the conversations of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the question remains. Will mass surveillance be rolled back? Or will the world have to accept the presence of this one Big Brother? Our guest today is British Labour MEP, Claude Moraes, head of the European delegation that went to Washington to seek clarification for the NSA's actions FULL TRANSCRIPT of the interview: http://on.rt.com/6iyd24 FOLLOW SophieCo on Twitter: http://twitter.com/SophieCo_RT RT LIVE http://rt.com/on-air Subscribe to RT! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=RussiaToday Like us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/RTnews Follow us on Twitter http://twitter.com/RT_com Follow us on Instagram http://instagram.com/rt Follow us on Google+ http://plus.google.com/+RT RT (Russia Today) is a global news network broadcasting from Moscow and Washington studios. European lawmakers took their push for answers on U.S. surveillance programs to the White House on Wednesday, meeting with Deputy National Security Adviser Lisa Monaco and other National Security Council staffers. This is "an extremely important issue of trust between the European Union and the United States," said Claude Moraes, head of the nine-member European Union delegation tasked with investigating disclosures of American spying on European leaders and citizens. "We want to get to the truth of these allegations" and rebuild a relationship of trust, he added. --- (Source:CNN) After the budget crisis ended last week, Obama called on Congress to pass an immigration reform bill saying it was one of his top priorities moving forward. The Senate passed a bipartisan bill on immigration earlier this year, but it has stalled since being handed to the House. Most House Republicans prefer a piece-by-piece approach. House Speaker John Boehner expressed optimism on Wednesday about House action by year's end on efforts to overhaul immigration. "I still think immigration reform is an important subject that needs to be addressed. And I'm hopeful," Boehner told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference when asked if the House can act in the remaining weeks. ---Source: Fox News Twitter last week said that it would price its IPO shares at $17 to $20 a piece, valuing the online messaging company at up to about $11 billion. That is less than the $15 billion that analysts had expected, and far below the $100 billion valuation that Facebook received in its IPO in May 2012. However, Facebook had reported an annual profit of $1 billion and revenue of $3.7 billion before it went public, whereas Twitter reported a net loss of $79.4 million on revenue of just $316.9 million in 2012. At the luncheon, Anthony Noto from Goldman Sachs, the bank that nabbed the highly coveted lead underwriting role, took the stage to introduce Twitter on behalf of other underwriters. They include Morgan Stanley's Michael Grimes, who was the face of Facebook's IPO 17 months ago, and JPMorgan star banker Jimmy Lee. ---Source: Reuters- published: 30 Oct 2013

President Obama to start NSA review
President Obama to start NSA review
President Barack Obama says he is the "final user" of all intelligence gathered by the National Security Agency and other intelligence agencies in the US. He says the White House gives the NSA "policy direction", but that over recent years "their capacities [have] continue to develop and expand". President Obama has called for a review of the agency's operations, "to make sure that what they're able to do doesn't necessarily mean what they should be doing." The call for a review follows allegations that the National Security Agency eavesdropped on German Chancellor Angela Merkel and 34 other foreign leaders. European Union officials, who were in Washington to gather more information about the mass surveillance, said trust had been broken. Speaking following a meeting with Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers Labour Party MEP Claude Moraes said, "we need to figure out why this kind of mass surveillance activity is happening and what kind of trust needs to be rebuilt." The delegation also said US surveillance of European citizens could affect negotiations over a US-Europe trade agreement.
