Carl Reinecke plays Beethoven, Ecossaise in E flat Major
Recorded by Carl Reinecke - 21 January 1905, Leipzig. Reinecke was a friend of Schumann, was helped in his career by Mendelssohn, knew Brahms as a young man, and probably heard Chopin play in Paris. His first concert tour, of Scandinavia, took place in 1843. He taught, amongst others, Albeniz, Grieg, Karg-Elert, Sinding, Sullivan, Thalberg and Cosima Wagner.

Carl Reinecke: From '24 Etuden für piano' Op. 121, Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5
2 - Andantino; 3 - Molto vivace; 4 - Allegro ma non troppo; 5 - Andantino ---------------------------------------------------------------------Reinecke (1824-1910) was a highly influential pianist and teacher, born in a part of Denmark that is now Germany. However, he spent much of his life in Germany, and in particular in Leipzig, where he taught at the conservatory - his pupils including Grieg, Janacek and Albeniz. Unfortunately, because posterity has deemed him a very big fish in the small pool of 19th c concert flute music, but a small fish in the very large pool of 19th c piano music, he is more remembered for his 'Undine' flute sonata and his flute concerto than his four piano concertos or other piano music - although he composed in many genres and his opus numbers reached the high 200's. The piano writing of the accompaniment to the 'Undine' sonata is quite difficult, and the more so for players unfamiliar with Reinecke's piano works and his personal style. This set of studies deals with some specific technical problems such as melodies and accompanying figures shared between the hands, and contains some pieces of the very highest quality. If you do not have time to watch the whole video, have a look at study #4 (starting at approx. 3:19), which has to be one of the finest short piano pieces of the 19th c.! ---------------------------------------------------------------------Played by Phillip Sear www.psear.co.uk

Elegy Op. 183, No. 2, by Carl Reinecke
Here's a solo piano piece: simple, but beautiful. It's composed by Carl Reinecke, and if you can't make out the top of the sheet, he lived from 1824 to 1910 - not too shabby! In my opinion, old Carl lived in one of the most fascinating times of humanity to date. His life span includes the last days of Beethoven, the industrial adaptation of electricity, the invention of the telephone and the automobile, and even the first airplanes. He was there at the birth of Romanticism, and still around for the birth of electronic music! It has occured to me that with this, and the Bruckner equali, that my videos to date consist of disproportionate amount of funeral music. I assure you this is merely coincidence, and will most likely even out over time. The music of this book comes from a Royal Conservatory, Grade Two series. The RCM books are great collections of repertoire for the money, this whole book cost me $8! I highly recommend picking up a collection that is accessible for you to enjoy. I'm a bit of a noob at piano still myself, but I'm going to keep at it!

John Field Nocturne No 4 played by Carl Reinecke on piano roll
Carl Reinecke plays John Field's Nocturne No 4, on Hupfeld piano roll 51813, recorded c.1907. This performance on a 1908 7'4" Gotha Steck Pianola grand, pianolist Julian Dyer, Jan 2009. Reinecke was the earliest-born (1824) pianist to have been recorded, initially on the Welte reproducing piano and here a year or two later for Hupfeld. The Hupfeld recordings did not include dynamics: although rolls were later issued for the Triphonola reproducing piano, the dynamics on these later rolls were added by Hupfeld's editors many years after the rolls were recorded. Here, the dynamics come from the pianolist, while the notes and phrasing come from Reinecke.

Carl Reinecke - Ballade
Adagio, Allegro Reinecke was born in Altona, Hamburg, Germany, at that time a Danish town. He studied with his father, Johann Peter Rudolph Reinecke, a music teacher. Carl began to compose at the age of seven, and his first public appearance as a pianist was when he was twelve years old. He undertook his first concert tour in 1843 which eventually led, in 1846, to his appointment as Court Pianist for Christian VIII in Copenhagen. There he remained until 1848. Overall he wrote four concertos for his instrument (and many cadenzas for others' works, including a large set published as his Opus 87), as well as concertos for violin, cello, harp and flute. In 1851 he became a professor at the Cologne Conservatory. In ensuing years he was appointed musical director at Barmen, and became the academic, musical director and conductor of the Singakademie at Breslau. In 1860, Reinecke was appointed director of the Gewandhaus Orchestra concerts in Leipzig, and professor of composition and piano at the Conservatorium. He led the orchestra until 1895. There he conducted such premieres as the full seven-movement version of Brahms's German Requiem (1869). In 1865 the Gewandhaus-Quartett premiered his piano quintet, and in 1892 his D major string quartet.[1] Reinecke is best known for his flute sonata "Undine", but he is also remembered as one of the most influential and versatile musicians of his time. He served as a teacher for 35 years, until 1902. His students included Edvard Grieg <b>...</b>

Carl Reinecke - Symphony No. 2 (1875)
Conducted by Howard Shelley with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. I. Hakon Jarl - 00:00 II. Thora - 11:21 III. In Odin's Grove - 18:52 IV. Oluf's Victory - 24:19 Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op. 134 dates from 1875, although a revised score exists in manuscript from 1888. Unusually, Reinecke adds a preface to the score which suggests that the work was inspired by Hakon Jarl -- a Norwegian historical tragedy by the Danish playwright Oehlenschläger -- although Reinecke insists that it is not to be regarded as programme music. The eponymous hero does battle and wins victory for the Norse god Odin and, at the same time, admires his daughter Thora. Each movement (reflecting characters and incidents from the tale) has a title in the manuscript, as follows: 1. Hakon Jarl 2. Thora 3. In Odin's Grove 4. Oluf's Victory In a footnote he also emphasises the metronomic precision with which tempo indications within the score were determined but, addressing future conductors of the work, adds that they should be 'imperceptible' Reinecke had a penchant for slow introductions, a trait he probably learned from Haydn, and indeed the formal perfection of Haydn and Mozart is clearly the model for all four movements. The da capo repeat must be strictly enforced in order to comply with his rigorous application of sonata form. Reinecke's natural melodic gift blossoms in the broadly flowing second subject of this opening movement, with its beautiful horn solos and striking use of exposed wind <b>...</b>
