Chet Forte Tribute to Howard Cosell
Video documentation for the nomination of Howard Cosell to the Pro Football Hall of Fame - Pete Rozelle Radio Television Award in 2012 Howard Cosell was a decent guy, just misunderstood. Cosell's Halftime Highlights helped make Monday Night Football a mainstream phenomenon. ABC signed lucrative advertising contracts, attendance sky-rocketed, player salaries escalated, owners profits soared, and revenues increased in cites that had NFL teams. QUESTION: How can the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio continue to legitimately document and recognize those sportscasters and journalists who have contributed to their own profession without also recognizing the one man to whom so many have affirmed their professional recognition verbally. Which of you sportswriters reading this will have the courage to present the case for him now? Who will stand-up for Howard Cosell and do what is necessary to add his name to the "Hall of Fame" with a "Pete Rozelle Radio Television Award" in 2012 Somebody who is a sportswriter needs to present his name to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio as a contributor.

Nominate Howard Cosell to Pro Football Hall of Fame
The question is..... how can the Pro Football Hall of Fame write the history of the NFL without mentioning Howard Cosell? Whether revered or reviled, remembered as a hero or villain, "Cosell was just as good at creating an audience as he was at alienating it, and THAT was just what sports needed." It's time for the late Howard Cosell, devoted NFL football fans, (and surviving members of the Cosell family) to see him receive proper recognition in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in return for his contributions to the game of professional football. Director Chet Forte is quoted as saying, "Howard Cosell was Monday Night Football. Without Howard Cosell, there was no Monday Night Football." Cosell was an iconic combination of pioneering sports journalist, color commentator and broadcast legend. True sports enthusiasts remember Howard Cosell for many different reasons. To some Cosell is remembered for his notable commentary reporting directly from the Olympic Village in Munich during the "Black September" murders in 1972, for others it was covering Muhammad Ali and the world of boxing at large, and still others for Cosell's interviewing John Lennon of the Beatles during a MNF game on December 9th, 1974, and almost exactly six years later, sadly announcing Lennon's death during another MNF game on December 8th, 1980. The exciting manner with which Cosell delivered his weekly "Halftime Highlights" recap of Sunday's games from the day before is still viewed with reverence in the ...

Howard Cosell and the Pro Football Hall of Fame
For some unknown reason, perhaps a massive oversight, broadcasting legend Howard Cosell has neither been inducted to the Pro Football (NFL) Hall of Fame, nor given the Pete Rozelle Award. Love him or hate him, the time has come to change these facts. Please share this with every sports fan you know.

Chris Berman on Howard Cosell Halftime Highlights
"Every person working in sports journalism today owes a tremendous debt to Howard Cosell. His greatest contribution was elevating sports reporting out of daily play-by-play and placing it in the larger context of society." -- President, ABC Sports, Roone Arledge Documentation for inducting Howard Cosell into the Pro Football Hall of Fame - Pete Rozelle Radio Television Award - 2012 ----------------------------------------------------- Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Cosell and Canton
I made a pit-stop at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, right on the heels of the 2011 induction weekend. I did not, however, set foot inside the building. Why? Because I'd like to see my grandfather, Howard Cosell, be in there first -- enshrined as a Hall of Fame inductee and Pete Rozelle Award Winner.

1963 NFL Championship
The 1963 NFL Championship New York Giants vs Chicago Bears. The 31st annual NFL championship game was played on December 29, 1963 at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Game time temperture was 9 - 11 degrees. NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle had asked Bears owner/coach George Halas to move the game to Soldier Field due to increased seating capacity as well as lights, in case the sun would set during the game. When Halas refused, Rozelle pushed the starting time of the game to 12:05 pm Central Time.

September 11, 1988 NFL Live (NFL on NBC Pregame Show) Part 1 with commercials.wmv
(c)1988 NFL; NBC Universal Another repeat. First is a brief WAVY ID touting one of their Virginia Associated Press Award wins (most of these are on some tapes with WAVY footage from the early part of 1988). Then we see the NBC Sports Olympic ID (more on that later); then the "Great Games, Great Moments" segment of the NFL Live! intro (featuring the Miami/NY Jets AFC Championship Game; Philadelphia/Oakland in Super Bowl XV; and Denver/San Diego from a 1985 regular season match) prior to leading into the studio shot. But instead of Bob Costas, the first face we see is Bob's NBC pregame predecessor, longtime WNBC sports director Len Berman (Costas, along with regular pregame co-host Ahmad Rashad and contributor Gayle Gardner as well as most of NBC's top-tier play-by-play men were on their way to South Korea) and are replaced by Paul Maguire (who split his time between the #2 NBC crew {normally alongside rising star Marv Albert} and the pregame show that year) and Gayle Sierens (more on her in part two). The top story on this broadcast is the drug situation in the NFL that led to the suspensions of 16 players (most notably, New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor; but also several San Francisco 49ers including eventual Super Bowl XXIII hero John Taylor). This segment includes an interview by NBC/Sports illustrated contributor Frank Deford with NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle; followed by a previously-taped interview between Berman and Chicago Bears defensive end/Super Bowl ...
