Trees for Life - Restoring the Caledonian Forest
The Caledonian Forest once covered much of the Highlands and was home to many rare and endangered species. Today, only a fraction of the original forest still survives and overgrazing prevents the growth of new trees. Urgent action is required to conserve the forest and its unique wildlife for the future.

Trees for Life initiated an aspen project in 1991 as part of our work to help restore the Caledonian Forest in Glen Affric and the surrounding areas. Our observations had shown that the species only occurred in small stands, often widely separated from each other, and that little regeneration was taking place, because of grazing pressure, primarily by red deer. In addition, in the light of aspen's relatively poor ability to reproduce from seed, we recognised that, unlike other tree species such as birch, rowan etc., it was very unlikely to spread beyond the sites where it was already established. To address these concerns, our aspen project has four main elements to it: surveying and mapping of existing stands; protection of ramets or suckers at existing stands to facilitate natural reg...
The Caledonian Forest originally covered 1.5 million hectares of the Scottish Highlands as a vast primeval wilderness of Scots pine, birch, rowan, aspen, juniper and other trees. Today, though, just 1% of the forest remains, and species such as the beaver, wild boar and lynx have gone. It's up to us to ensure the survival of this ancient and remarkable woodland. It's Scotland's equivalent of the rainforest and it urgently needs our help. Photos by Alan Watson. Trees for Life is the only organization specifically dedicated to restoring the Caledonian Forest to a target area of 600 sq miles in the Scottish Highlands. They work in partnership with the Forestry Commission, RSPB and private landowners, and own and manage the 10,000 acre Dundreggan Estate. Each year they run over 45 Conservation Work Weeks. Hundreds of volunteers join us annually in planting over 100,000 trees in protected areas, and carry out other restoration work such as seed collection and propagation of young trees and rare woodland plants. The organization is responsible for having planted over 800,000 trees since 1989. www.treesforlife.org.uk This short film is part of "The Journey" an unique documentary project that delves into environmental, socio-culture and economic ...
I had no choice
Perfectly clear from the start
I heard your voice
And I was falling
Into a space
Where daylight kisses moonlit skies
It was the place
As written in your eyes
And oh, we made it
We finally found our way
And celebrating
Just where we... We stand today
I'll let my heart show the way
Oceans and mountians between us
Because your love Is why
You made the wrong right
I will give my all
Will heed your call
For Life
I had no choice
Perfectly clear from the start
I will rejoice
Embrace your calling
And into a space
Where daylight kisses moonlit skies
I heard your voice
And I knew it was for life
I'll let my heart show the way
Oceans and mountians between us
Because your love Is why
Ou made the wrong right
I will give my all
Will heed your call
For Life
