How to put a Namam?, Vaishnavites of Tamilnadu
Many of the Hindu men wear a decorative mark on their forehead with sandal wood paste, vermillion or holy ashes. The Vaishnavites or devotees of Lord Vishu put a mark in the shape of the alphabet 'U' in English where as Shaivites or devotees of Lord Shiva apply it in horizontal lines. These are called different names in different parts of the country -- Gopi, Kuri, Namam, Patta, Thilakam and so on. Here you see the namams of Vaishnavites in Thirukkurungudi Village, Nanguneri, Thrirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu. Film: Chandidas (1934)
Singers: Uma Shashi, K L Saigal
Lyrics: Agha Hashra Kashmiri
Music: R C Boral
K.L. Saigal stars as Chandidas and Umasashi as Rami, featuring several of their popular duets (e.g. Prem nagar mein banaongi ghar main) and other songs with Sanyal. This film is about Chandidas, a legendary 15th-C. Bengali Vaishnavite poet whose biography remains obscure but was an influence on the better documented Chaitanya (1486-1533), a school teacher who promoted the Vaishnavite ideology in Bengal, mostly through hymns about the Radha-Krishna legend. The film stressed the poet's teachings through the love story between Chandidas and a low-caste washerwoman, Rami. The conventional villain of the saint film genre, who represents the established order threatened by the outsider's revolutionary influence on common people, is the rapacious upper-caste merchant Bijoynarayan. When Rami rejects his advances, he persuades the high priest to insist that Chandidas must repent or be punished for associating with a low-caste woman. Chandidas agrees to repent but when he sees the injuries Rami has suffered at the hands of the merchant's goons, he rejects institutionalized religion in favor of the higher Vaishnavite call for a more democratic god and leaves the village with Rami.

HARIPATH THE HIDDEN SPLENDOR
Haripath is an important mile stone. Each composition is musically composed and is the poetic expression of inner oneness and bliss. These are known as Abhangas. These are soaked in the essence of Dnyaneshwar. This is the reason that these Abhangas form the part of every Maharashtrian home and all those who seek oneness.
Dnyaneshwar through these Abhangas has brought the spirit or duality of Shaivite and Vaishnavite as oneness through Vitthal or Panduranga where the Shaivite and Vaishnavite merge into one another.
Such is the spirit or the essence of Dnyaneshwar. Through these meditations the effort is made to maintain this spirit and take the aspirant from the physical level of ritual singing to inner state of meditativeness when you are connected to the energy field of Dnyaneshwar.
When it was decided to create such meditations around each Abhanga, a certain format was decided upon so the work happens at the physical, mental, intellectual and the spiritual plane. For this it was imperative to classify these Abhangas into these categories.
However, when the process began, it was felt that there is no such need. Each Abhanga works at all three planes simultaneously. Only thing that, it requires, is the awareness on the part of the aspirant. Once, there
is awareness one is easily connected to the saint and his energy field. In the absence a bridge is to be created. This bridge will connect the two shores where you stand and the other shore where Dnyaneshwar dwells.
Without this bridge one cannot reach to the inner core of his being on his own. There are certain rare possibilities when one can reach on once own. Based on these we cannot make generalizations.
Therefore our effort through these compositions is to create many bridges so that you can reach the essence of Dnyaneshwar and thus connect to your being. The moment this happens your process of transformation begins.
Our effort through this work of guided meditations is to let each Abhanga become a bridge over the vast ocean of life that lies ahead of you and you are connected to your being. With this we take you through these guided meditations.

Alagar Kovil * Madurai
One of Lord Vishnu's 108- Divya desams
Alagar Koil is a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is situated at a distance of 21 km from Madurai, on foot of Alagar hills, amongst the natural beauty of the woods. The Vaishnavite temple is famous for its beautiful sculptures and exquisite 'mandapams'. It is believed that pilgrims visited Azhgar Kovil even in the early days of the Sangam age. According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Vishnu came to this place from his heavenly abode to give away Goddess Meenakshi in marriage to Lord Sundareswarer.
The splendid main tower at the entrance is believed to have been built by the Pandyan Kings. According to the historical background of the place, Malayadhwaja Pandyan, son of Kulasekhara Pandyan, was the earliest known monarch to patronize the temple. Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan beautified the 'vimana' of the shrine with gold plates. After the Pandya rule, the Nayakas patronized the deity.
The main deity of this temple is called Paramaswamy and the processional idol is called Alagar or Sundararajan. The stunning idol is made of pure gold and is an exquisite example of craftsmanship. There is shrine of Kalyana Sundaravalli, the divine consort of Alagar, in the southern enclosure. There is another shrine in the north dedicated to Andal. Other important shrines are of Sudarshanar and Yoga Narasimha.
There is another shrine nearby, dedicated to Karuppannaswamy, the God of Kallars. There are finely carved eighteen steps, which are an object of both worship and amazement by the devotees. It is claimed that nobody dares to tell a lie at this spot. The place is also known for its holy springs called Silamboru and Noopura Gangai. According to local tradition, these springs originated from the anklets of Maha Vishnu during His incarnation as Trivikrama.
The legend
The legend has it that sage Suthapas (Munivar) was bathing in Nupura Gangai at Alagar Hill and did not pay heed to Durvasar Maharishi, who was passing by. The enraged Durvasar cursed Suthapas that he would turn into a frog until he is redeemed of his curse by Lord Sundararajar, who is also known as Kallazhagar.
The Suthapas Maharishi, who is named as 'Mandooga' munivar because of his frog status, performed 'thapas' (prayer) on the banks of river Vaigai, which is otherwise known as Vegavathi, at Thenur. The Lord Kallazhagar comes from his abode in Alagar Hill to redeem Mandooga Maharishi of his curse, when he is praying.
Since days unknown, it is believed that the lord Kallazhagar comes to Thenur via Malaipatti, Alanganallur and Vayalur. In Thenur Mandap, the lord redeems the sage of his curse and leaves for his abode.
"During Thirumalai Nayak regime (1623 to 1659 AD), in 1653 the Mandooga Maharishi relieving ritual was shifted to Vandiyur village where the event is performed at Thennur Mandapam, built by Thirumalai Nayak himself.
Pathinetampadi Karuppa samy( '18-steps' - Karuppa Samy)
When we enter into the enterance, first we have to pray the "protection deity of the Alagar malai",called pathinetaampadi Karuppa Samy.

Thiruppullani * Place of Shelter ~
About*
Thirupullani is the very ancient Vaishnavite Divya desam, which is at the south east of Ramanathapuram from 8 K.M and 4 K.m from the north of southern coast of Sethukarai.A lot of buses are there from Ramanathapuram to here.
This has the basic salient features of Theertham, Moorthy, Isthalam. Sri Rama (incarnation of lord Vishnu) in the ancient past had come to this spot and had worshiped the lord Athi Jeganatha Perumal and had got His Bow and arrow in order to destroy the demon king Ravana and got back His wife Seetha.
Again this is the place which had been the sheltering place of Vibishnan, the younger brother of demon king Ravana and who he became the king of Srilanka later on. The king of ocean with his wife had surrendered under the lotus feet of Rama.
This has been the place in which the 'Sugha saranarkal' had been sheltered under the flower feet of lord Vishnu. The great sages namely Pullavar, Kannuvar had worshiped here and got their 'paramapatham' (immortality).
So we simply could learn that Thirupullani is the place which has been known for it's 'Saranagathi Tharumam', that is it simply tell us that the surrender at the feet of the lord Athi jeganatha perumal would never have been wasted, sure we could get His mercy of paramapatham.
Again the king 'Dhasarathar' had been here and been gifted with four divinely children namely Rama, Lakshmana, Bharatha and Satrukana, who were said to be the 'amsam' (like incarnation) of four vedas.
Again one who haven't a child for a long time, should come here and worship the lord Athi jeganatha perumal and should do the ritual of 'Nagaprathistai' (means to holy-erect the stone sculptured snake form) under the holy big tree found in the corridor of the temple and should drink the 'payasam' (sweet liquid ) which has been the 'neivaethiyam' (food offered to god) here. After having done this ritual, they should have been definitely gifted with a good child.
This has the unique feature of being worshiped by lord Rama (incarnation of lord Vishnu). Also it's been sung by (mangalashasanam) one of the 12 'Alwars' (fierce disciples of lord Vishnu) namely 'Thirumangai Alwar'.
The 'Asuvatham' (Arasa maram), the idol of 'Santhana Krishnan' in the form of having danced on the snake, the idol of 'Tharbha sayana Raman' (lord Rama in the sleeping posture on the 'tharpai' grass) with greedam and the sword and the 'Chakra theertham' (enriched with minerals) are the salient features of this Isthalam (place).
The shrine of Pattabi Raman*
It's just before the shrine of 'Tharpa sayana Raman' having with the majestic flagstaff and sacrifice beedam. Having guarded by the 'Thuvarabalags' on both side of Him at the 'artha mantapam', lord Pattabi Raman lies in the sanctum next to the artha mantapam.
The legend is that when lord Rama defeated and killed the demon king Ravana at Srilanka and came with His wife Sita on the 'Pushpa vimanam' by crossing over the ocean via this place 'Thirupullani' to His home town 'Ayothi', He had been requested by the devotees to announce Him as the king ('pattam' sootuthal) and He also fulfilled their desire and hence He has been called as 'Pattabi Raman'.
Again, one who bathe in the ocean here and worship the lord 'Pattabi Raman' should definitely get all the virtues in the earth, a spiritual saying in Sanskrit "Sethu dharshnam itham punyam seshanabi naganyathae" tell like this.
Shrine of Santhana Gopalan*
This shrine lies in the north of the shrine of 'Tharpa sayana Raman' at the corridor. This mantapam has also been called as Nagar mantapam and Santhana krishna mantapam. Here lord Krishna is blessing, having got the 'Athiseshan' as His Aasanam (seat). The idol is said to have been the one which, the king 'Dasaratha' (father of lord Rama) had consecrated here in order to satisfy his predecessors as well as a request for grant him a good child.
So one who come here for a good child, would have to do the ritual of 'Naga prathishtai' in which the devotee would have to holy erect a 'Naga's idol' (stone curved in the snake form) under the isthla virutcham of peepal tree.
One special feature about this temple is if any one of the vaishnava (followers of lord Vishnu) could begin his 'Divya desam's pilgrimage', he definitely would want to close his pilgrimage only here.

V V Sadagopan Adharam Neethan Endru
from the pages of The Hindu - He came, he achieved ... and vanished
Sadagopan... youthful and charismatic
"HE WAS a star, handsome and charismatic. He was a graduate and an acclaimed Carnatic musician. When I learnt that the producers of the new film were planning to have him as the hero, I knew that I stood no chance of being considered for the role." The actor who wrote thus in his autobiography in later years was none other than M. G. Ramachandran, the most charismatic film personality this country has ever seen. And the hero described by him is V. V. Sadagopan (VVS).
Viravanallur Vedantam Sadagopan was born on January 29, 1915, in an orthodox Vaishnavite family and spent his childhood and youth in Tirunelveli. He was a graduate and pursued a parallel vocation in music. He had his musical training under Namakkal Sesha Iyengar and Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar and became one of the most sought after musicians in the 1930s. At the height of his musical career he entered films and was hailed as Rudolf Valentino of the Indian screen. His films included "Athisayam" and "Madanakamarajan." It was an era when actors were chosen for their musical skills and good looks, as they had to sing their songs on screen. "Navayuvan," in which he played the hero, is said to be the first Indian film to have had scenes shot in a foreign location. VVS sailed to London for the purpose and photographs of the hero in a suit were splashed in the press, as part of the publicity for the film.
Back to the stage
The introduction of playback singing ended the choice of singing stars and VVS returned to the concert platform in 1943. On his return one of the critics of the day heralded: "Here comes Sadagopan, make way... " He was a rare combination of a musician and a musicologist and won acclaim in both fields. He was a prolific writer in English and Tamil and a composer in several languages. Apart from articles on music he has written poetry, lyrics and even a number of stories in Tamil, which were published in Ananda Vikatan. He served as the Director for Music Studies at Gandhigram Rural Institute, Madurai. He trained several students , noteworthy among them being Shyamala Balakrishnan, who researched on folk music of Tamil Nadu under his guidance.
He served two terms as Professor at the University of Delhi and was a member of the Board of Studies in several universities. He was a member of the audition panel of All India Radio and also of the experts committee of the Music Academy, Madras. He travelled all over the country and abroad for his lecture-cum-concerts.
VVS's compositions include kritis, keerthanais, ragamaligais, padams, kili kanni and a series of Tirukkural keerthanais, wherein the Kural forms the pallavi and is elaborated in the anupallavi and charanam. As a music composer he has left behind a lasting legacy. The famous, "Gana Mazhai Pozhigindraan," is from the first volume of Ambujam Krishna's songs, which he set to music. He was the first to render a whole concert of Kamba Ramayanam verses at the Kamban Vizha at Karaikudi — the music for which were composed by him. He also set to music several pasurams of Divya Prabandham. His close friendship with great scholars like Mi. Pa. Somasundaram inspired him to delve deep into Tamil literature and set several pieces to music.
Music education for children became his passion and mission in later years. He called his integrative scheme of music education Tyagabharati, a term he had coined to epitomise the ideals of Tyagaraja and Subrahmanya Bharati. In this he struck an entirely new path, composing nursery rhymes in Tamil and Hindi, set to simple lilting tunes.
Mellowed into a scholar with a vision
As a visionary he was far ahead of his time. The children whom he taught songs and dances ("Roja Chedi Oru Rani" and "Paatti nalla paatti" and several others) with joy and abandon on the green lawns of India Gate, New Delhi, lapped them all up. .
Mysterious exit
However the elders, comprising his friends and well wishers often stood perplexed, unable to comprehend the new role that this musical giant had donned. On April 10, 1980, he left Delhi by train, for Madras. He was seen alighting at Gudur, the next day. He has not been seen ever since. Rumours of sighting him in Varanasi and the Himalayas and consequent searches have yielded no results.

C Vijaya Raghava chariyar
(1852-1944)
C. Vijayaraghavachariar, as he was popularly known, was born on June 18, 1852 in an orthodox Vaishnavite Brahmin family at Pon Vilaindha Kalathur, in Chingleput district, Tamil Nadu. His father being a purohit and steeped in religious lore, was eager to bring up his son according to orthodox traditions. At a very early age, Vijayaraghavachariar was sent to the Veda Pathshala in his village and was brought up in a tradition of memorising the Vedas. This stood him in good stead in later years. His English education began in his twelfth year when he joined the Madras Pachaiyappa High School. He matriculated in 1870. He graduated from the Madras Presidency College in 1875.
Appearing privately for the Law examination he began to practice in 1881. He was an able Advocate and a leader of the Bar at Salem. In 1882, a short time after he set up practice at Salem there was a Hindu-Muslim riot. Vijayaraghavachariar was implicated in the riot and charges were framed against him. He relentlessly fought the charges in the Court of Law and finally came out unscathed. Fighting the case for those implicated in the Salem riots of 1882 made Vijayaraghavachariar famous overnight. He was called "The Hero of Salem" and "Lion of South India". When the Indian National Congress was started in 1885 he was one of the special invitees. He was a close associate of A. O. Hume, the founder of the Indian National Congress. He attended the Bombay session of the Congress and in 1887 he was one of the members of the committee which drafted the constitution of the Indian National Congress. From then on Vijayaraghavachariar became an ardent freedom fighter. His counsels and leadership were much sought after by the Congressmen of the early days.
