Paul Vaughn Butterfield (December 17, 1942 – May 4, 1987) was an American blues singer and harmonica player. After early training as a classical flutist, Butterfield developed an interest in blues harmonica. He explored the blues scene in his native Chicago, where he was able to meet Muddy Waters and other blues greats who provided encouragement and a chance to join in the jam sessions. Soon, Butterfield began performing with fellow blues enthusiasts Nick Gravenites and Elvin Bishop.
In 1963, he formed the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, who recorded several successful albums and were a popular fixture on the late-1960s concert and festival circuit, with performances at the Fillmores, Monterey Pop Festival, and Woodstock. They became known for combining electric Chicago blues with a rock urgency as well as their pioneering jazz fusion performances and recordings. After the breakup of the group in 1971, Butterfield continued to tour and record in a variety of settings, including with Paul Butterfield's Better Days, his mentor Muddy Waters, and members of the roots-rock group The Band.
Blues is a genre and musical form that originated in African-American communities in the "Deep South" of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The genre developed from roots in traditional African music, combined with European American folk music. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll, is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. The blue notes (or "worried notes") which are often thirds or fifths which are flatter in pitch than in other music styles, are also an important part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bass reinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect called a groove.
Blues as a genre possesses other characteristics such as lyrics, bass lines, and instruments. The lyrics of early traditional blues verses consisted of a single line repeated four times. It was only in the first decades of the 20th century that the most common current structure became standard: the so-called AAB pattern, consisting of a line sung over the four first bars, its repetition over the next four, and then a longer concluding line over the last bars. Early blues frequently took the form of a loose narrative, often relating troubles experienced within African American society.

Reflecting back on the music of the 60's 70' and 80's with a look at VH-1 and how things have really changed....... It is impossible to include all of the talented artists that appeared at the Woodstock Festival, into a four minute video clip. The following did. Also a tip of the hat to the directors and cinematographers of Woodstock, Stoned, Seventh Seal and Neal Young and the various MTV / VH-1 artists that helped to make this movie a hoot to put together. This is a music video I did in high school to the song Walking Blues by the Paul Butterflied Blues Band. It was the second video I ever made and has a special place in my heart. It screened at the Tucson International Film Festival in 2007. The discovery of the visual style in this video is very significant in my larger ascetic. I discovered many things making this film that you can see in much of my later personal work. Indecently Paul Butterfield's children saw this video somehow and invited me to the Paul Butterfield Fund & Society Gathering & Blues Jam in his memory in Massachusetts to screen the film. I could not attend-and they did not offer to fly me out or anything, but they did screen the video without me, which was cool.

After summer is over and my sidecar classes are finished, I get to do some riding for fun! This usually coincides with cooler, wetter weather. Fireseason is over and the backroads and trails are open again. November 1rst I invited some friends over to go out and play in the mud. It rained most of the ride and we rode through some dense fog, but it didn't seem that cold and it was a fun ride with a good group of people. After we got back from the ride, we touched off the bonfire, BBQ'd some elk sausages to go with our chili and cornbread and we washed it all down with some home brew and with hot apple cider spiked with rum. A perfect day! This vid is from the second half of the ride. Music is by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band from the East West album adventuresidecar.com

In May of 1998 I interviewed Levon and his band and created a short documentary on the making of their tenth album Jubilation. After the interview with Levon, Mr. Helm, knowing I loved playing the harp, offered to teach me something he'd been taught by Paul Butterfield. Yes! My dear friend and collaborator on the shoot, Gil Ross, had the presence of mind to push the record button on my camera and capture this "in between" moment. It's Levon the legend mentoring an amateur musician --- giving the gift -- direct from Paul to Levon - to me. And now to you! Thanks to our production team, Gil Ross, Tom Leavens and Kevin Devick. And again, eternal thanks to The Band for their gracious acceptance of our film making efforts. It will always be one of my fondest shoots. In remembrance...

Eddie James "Son" House, Jr. (March 21, 1902 - October 19, 1988) was an American blues singer and guitarist. House pioneered an innovative style featuring strong, repetitive rhythms, often played with the aid of slide guitar, and his singing often incorporated elements of southern gospel and spiritual music. House was an important influence on Muddy Waters and also on Robert Johnson. A seminal Delta blues figure, he remains influential today, with his music being covered by blues-rock groups such as The White Stripes.

Well I've been to Kansas City
Girls and everything is really alright
Yes, I've been to Kansas City
Girls and everything is really alright
Yeah the boys jump and swing
And to the broad daylight
Yes I dreamed last night
I was standin' on 18th and vine
Yes I dreamed last night
I was standin' on 18th and vine
I shook hands with Piney Brown
An' I could hardly keep from cryin'
Now come to me baby
I want to tell why I'm in love with you
Please come to me baby
I want to tell you why I'm in love with you
Because you understan'
Everything I do
I want to watch you baby
When the tears roll down your cheeks
Yes, I want to watch you baby
When the tears roll down your cheeks
I wanna hold your hand
Tell you that your kind can't be beat
