Limited release is a term in the American motion picture industry for a motion picture that is playing in a select few theaters across the country (typically in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco).

A limited release is often used to gauge the appeal of specialty films – especially of documentaries, independent films and art films. A common practice by major film studios is to give highly anticipated and critically acclaimed films a limited release in December in New York and Los Angeles in order to qualify them for an Academy Award nomination, as set out by the rules outlined by the Academy. These films would often receive a wider release later in January or February.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which first premiered in 1975, is still shown at limited theaters making it now the longest-running theatrical release in film history.^[1][2]

Yet a new meaning may come to the term Limited Release as an upcoming DVD and Video On Demand experiment will see films released on the these platforms after only a month or so in theaters. Meaning the term would refer to the month long theatrical release in Canada and the United States, as opposed to films just release in Los Angeles and New York.^[3]

Platform Release[link]

A platform release is a limited release strategy, whereby the film opens in only a few theaters, then gradually expands to more theaters as word of mouth spreads and the marketing campaign gains momentum.^[4] Depending on the film's success, there is even the possibility to expand into a wide release. The advantage of this strategy is that marketing costs are conserved until a film's performance has been established. This way, if a film turns out to be very popular or critically acclaimed, the distributor may opt to spend more money than originally planned and push for a wider release; if the movie flops, the distributor can withdraw from the campaign without having spent much money promoting and advertising the film.

In the early stages of a platform release, the key metric is the per-theater average gross, not the total box office gross.^[5] Art house and independent movie theaters like to see a high per-theater average, as proof that they will be successful if they release the film. A distributor using this release strategy must take care that they don't expand the release too quickly: If a film is successful early on, many theaters will be interested in playing it - but if the distributor releases the film into too many theaters at this stage, the limited audience will be spread over multiple theaters, lowering the per-theater average and making the film appear weaker.

Other uses[link]

In the modern Japanese music industry, the term "limited release" is also used to denote a musical release that will be produced in limited quantities only. A limited release therefore differs from a limited edition, as the latter implies that there will be no alternative or second issuing.

Scott Keeney (born November 15, 1983), better known by his stage name DJ Skee, is an American DJ, radio personality, television host, video producer, and entrepreneur operating out of Los Angeles. Skee manages his own new media music, marketing, and production company, Skee.TV. Skee performs worldwide, has headlined tours from Asia through South America, hosts his own radio shows on Los Angeles' KIIS-FM and Sirius XM Satellite Radio (with worldwide syndication), and remixes music from various artists such as Jay-Z. His business portfolio includes a creative marketing and branding company, record label, management company, and production arm.

Skee was born November 15, 1983 in New York City. After moving between Texas and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Skee was raised in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Skee started creating mixtapes when he was 15 and soon became regionally known. Starting on air at the age of 16 at a local station in Minneapolis, MN, Skee split time as a teen between Minnesota and New York City where he began his work in the music business. After graduating a year early from Central High School (Saint Paul, Minnesota) in 2001, Skee moved to Los Angeles under the guidance of Steve Rifkind to work directly for him at Loud Records and SRC Marketing.

DJ & Radio Career[link]

Skee first appeared on radio in the year 2000 on Minneapolis's KMOJ at the age of 16, and was on air through 2001 until he moved to Los Angeles.

In 2005, Skee started his run on Satellite Radio for the now defunct channel Sirius WAX 42.

In early 2007, Skee launched a show on KPWR (Power 106) Los Angeles, before leaving for rival station KIIS-FM in November 2008.

Currently, Skee's radio shows reach millions of weekly listeners worldwide, via Los Angeles' KIIS-FM (the most listened-to radio station in the country by arbitron audience ratings), Sirius XM Satellite Radio, and also via a syndication deal in Australia, Japan, and Europe. He has interviewed everyone from Lady Gaga to Jennifer Lopez on air.

Performing, Skee has toured worldwide, opened the $100 million dollar mega-club XS inside the Encore Las Vegas, performed at official events for the GRAMMY Awards, NFL Superbowl, and on the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.

SKEETOX is DJ Skee's band that has also toured worldwide and highlighted the 2011 NHL Winter Classic in Pittsburgh. SKEETOX is a six piece band centered around DJ Skee while he conducts the band and plays acapellas and vocals from all generes of music remixing and mashing them up on the fly. Artists including Snoop Dogg, Mike Posner, Ice Cube, Lil Jon, and others have come out as surprise guest performers during the set.

Outside of his career as a DJ and personality, Skee is active in the entertainment business as a business entrepreneur being recently named one of Billboard Magazine's influential "Power Players: 30 Under 30" in the August 21, 2010 issue.^[2].

Known as the person behind the entire marketing campaigns and promotions for the popular T-Mobile Sidekick in the mid 2000's, Skee has also orchestrated campaigns for Daimler-Chrysler (and specifically the launch of the Chrysler 300 & Dodge Magnum in 2004) , Google's Android Platform, nearly every major record label in the world, and more.

Skee was also named as an honorable mention Forbes Magazine's influential "Power Players: 30 Under 30" in the January, 2012 issue.^[3]

In 2011, Skee launched Skee Sports, and has since worked with athletes and sports leagues including Kevin Durant, Kemba Walker, Jamaal Charles, the NHL, MLB, and more.
