Korean rock

Korean rock is rock music originating from South Korea.

History

Korean rock started in the late 1950s with Shin Jung-hyun and his band. While this was happening, Shin Jung-hyun was able to develop a distinctly Korean style of rock and roll. Finally in 1962, Shin Jung-hyun formed his first rock band in Korea, Add 4. During the 1970s, music was heavily censored by the government. Shin Jung-hyun was imprisoned on drug charges. Han Dae-soo moved to New York in self-exile after two of his albums were banned by the government. The imprisonment of Shin slowed the production of Korean rock, but other artists, most notably Sanulrim emerged during the late '70s, before dance music came to dominate Korean popular music in the '80s.

In the 1980s, popular musical tastes had moved away from rock music. The scene was dominated by heavy metal music, in particular Boohwal, Baekdoosan, and Sinawe, collectively known as the Big 3.

Rock music was revived in the early '90s with democratization following the presidency of Roh Tae-woo. As information flowed more freely into the country, Korean youths were exposed to decades of popular foreign music in a short span of time, and some began to form bands. Two of the earliest bands were Crying Nut and No Brain, which introduced the country to a variety of new genres in a localized blend called "Chosun Punk," spearheaded by indie label Drug Records which also managed Club Drug. With increased globalization and access to the Internet, the music scene diversified and incorporated more styles of music. The late '90s saw increasing diversity in musical influences, as younger bands like Rux emerged and The Geeks introduced Korea to straight edge hardcore punk. Ska-punk was another strong early influence, producing bands including Lazybone and Beach Valley. In 2006, Skasucks formed and led the ska-punk movement in Korea.

Angel Heart

Angel Heart is a 1987 American noir horror mystery thriller film written and directed by Alan Parker, and starring Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro, and Lisa Bonet. The film was adapted from the novel Falling Angel by William Hjortsberg.

Plot

Harry Angel (Rourke), is a downtrodden New York City private detective contracted by Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro) to track down John Liebling, known as Johnny Favorite, who suffered severe neurological trauma resulting from injuries he received in World War II. Favorite's incapacity disrupted a contract with Cyphre regarding unspecified collateral, and Cyphre believes that a private upstate hospital where Favorite was receiving radical psychiatric treatment for shell shock has falsified records, deliberately preventing the contract from being fulfilled. He hires Angel to discover the truth and locate Favorite's true whereabouts.

List of number-one Billboard Rock Songs

Hot Rock Songs is a record chart published by Billboard magazine. From its debut on June 20, 2009, through October 13, 2012, the chart ranked the airplay of songs across alternative, mainstream rock, and triple A radio stations in the United States. However, since the chart dated October 20, 2012, the Hot Rock Songs chart has followed the methodology of the Billboard Hot 100 by incorporating digital download sales, streaming data, and radio airplay of rock songs over all formats. Before that date the chart was ranked by overall audience impressions (the approximate number of audience impressions made for each play, as determined by BDS data cross-referenced with Arbitron listener information).

Since its introduction, thirty-nine singles have reached the number-one position on the Rock Songs chart. Foo Fighters and Linkin Park have been the most successful groups, with each having three singles to top the chart. Walk the Moon's "Shut Up and Dance" is the longest running number-one single, having spent a total of twenty-seven consecutive weeks atop the chart. Foo Fighters have spent the longest time atop the chart, as their three number-one singles have spent a combined thirty weeks at the summit. Out of the thirty-nine singles that hit the number-one position, ten singles spent two separate runs atop the chart. Coldplay's "A Sky Full of Stars" is the only single to have returned to the top position for three distinct runs. Thirty artists have recorded number-one singles. The first number-one single on the chart was Green Day's "Know Your Enemy", which led the chart's debut week. The most recent number-one single is Twenty One Pilots's "Stressed Out".
