Michael Praetorius (Creuzburg, Turingia, 15 de febrero de 1571 - 15 de febrero de 1621) fue un compositor y organista alemán. Fue uno de los más versátiles compositores de su época e influyó en el desarrollo de formas basadas en himnos protestantes.
Michael Praetorius nació en Creuzburg (Turingia) en el seno de una estricta familia luterana, lo que determinó todo el curso de su carrera musical. Su padre había sido alumno de Martín Lutero y le había asistido en la confección del Himnario Luterano original.

Michael Praetorius was one of the most important composers and theorists of the late renaissance and early-17th century. His astonishing encyclopedia of music gives us an intriguing glimpse into the instruments and performance practices of the time, and his writing covers all aspects of music. Praetorius wrote popular hymn settings, as well as large-scale compositions that borrowed elements of the polychoral Italian tradition. Praetorius was a tune collector, just like the musicologists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who collected songs and dances from different countries; he planned eight volumes of these secular works, but he only finished one: his book of French instrumental dances Terpsichore, named after the muse of dance (1612).
Orchestration: in the 1960s and 1970s, these works were heavily orchestrated--and conducted--in a neo-renaissance style. Although not grounded in historical performance, these orchestrations did, however, introduce a wider audience to the different kinds of instruments in the late renaissance and early baroque and helped popularize the music before Bach.
The string band at this time was the core group for dance dance music, so our performance is primarily strings using early 17th century bows, although a more complex orchestration is not incompatible with Praetorius's large scale works.

Contrary to its name, the islands have little to nothing to do with the canary bird. Rather, it is the bird that is named after the islands, not the converse. The name Islas Canarias is likely derived from the Latin name Canariae Insulae, meaning "Island of the Dogs", a name applied originally only to Gran Canaria. According to the historian Pliny the Elder, the Mauritanian king Juba II named the island Canaria because it contained "vast multitudes of dogs of very large size".[19]
Another speculation is that the so-called dogs were actually a species of Monk Seals (canis marinus or "sea dog" was a Latin term for 'seal'[20]), critically endangered and no longer present in the Canary Islands.[21] The dense population of seals may have been the characteristic that most struck the few ancient Romans who established contact with these islands by sea.
Alternatively, it is said that the original inhabitants of the island, Guanches, used to worship dogs, mummified them and treated dogs generally as holy animals.[22] The ancient Greeks also knew about a people, living far to the west, who are the "dog-headed ones", who worshipped dogs on an island.[22] Some hypothesize that the Canary Islands dog-worship and the ancient Egyptian cult of the dog-headed god, Anubis are closely connected[23] but there is no explanation given as to which one was first.
Other theories speculate that the name comes from a reported Berber tribe living in the Moroccan Atlas, named in Roman sources as Canarii. Though Pliny again mentions the relation of this term with dogs.

Michael Praetorius
Michael Praetorius (probably February 15, 1571 – February 15, 1621) was a German composer, organist, and music theorist. He was one of the most versatile composers of his age, being particularly significant in the development of musical forms based on Protestant hymns, many of which reflect an effort to improve the relationship between Protestants and Catholics.
Life
He was born Michael Schultze, the youngest son of a Lutheran pastor, in Creuzburg, in present-day Thuringia. After attending school in Torgau and Zerbst, he studied divinity and philosophy at the University of Frankfurt (Oder). He was fluent in a number of languages. After receiving his musical education, from 1587 he served as organist at the Marienkirche in Frankfurt. From 1592/3 he served at the court in Wolfenbüttel, under the employ of Henry Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. He served in the duke's State Orchestra, first as organist and later (from 1604) as Kapellmeister.
His first compositions appeared around 1602/3. Their publication primarily reflects the care for music at the court of Gröningen. The motets of this collection were the first in Germany to make use of the new Italian performance practices; as a result, they established him as a proficient composer.

Michael Praetorius (Creuzburg, Turingia, 15 de febrero de 1571 - 15 de febrero de 1621) fue un compositor y organista alemán. Fue uno de los más versátiles compositores de su época e influyó en el desarrollo de formas basadas en himnos protestantes. Michael Praetorius nació en Creuzburg (Turingia) en el seno de una estricta familia luterana, lo que determinó todo el curso de su carrera musical. Su padre había sido alumno de Martín Lutero y le había asistido en la confección del Himnario Luterano original. Estudió en Torgau, Fráncfort del Oder y luego en Zerbst (Anhalt). Michael Praetorius (Creuzburg, Turingia, 15 de febrero de 1571 - 15 de febrero de 1621) fue un compositor y organista alemán. Fue uno de los más versátiles compositores de su época e influyó en el desarrollo de formas basadas en himnos protestantes.
Michael Praetorius nació en Creuzburg (Turingia) en el seno de una estricta familia luterana, lo que determinó todo el curso de su carrera musical. Su padre había sido alumno de Martín Lutero y le había asistido en la confección del Himnario Luterano original.

Michael Praetorius was one of the most important composers and theorists of the late renaissance and early-17th century. His astonishing encyclopedia of music gives us an intriguing glimpse into the instruments and performance practices of the time, and his writing covers all aspects of music. Praetorius wrote popular hymn settings, as well as large-scale compositions that borrowed elements of the polychoral Italian tradition. Praetorius was a tune collector, just like the musicologists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who collected songs and dances from different countries; he planned eight volumes of these secular works, but he only finished one: his book of French instrumental dances Terpsichore, named after the muse of dance (1612).
Orchestration: in the 1960s and 1970s, these works were heavily orchestrated--and conducted--in a neo-renaissance style. Although not grounded in historical performance, these orchestrations did, however, introduce a wider audience to the different kinds of instruments in the late renaissance and early baroque and helped popularize the music before Bach.
The string band at this time was the core group for dance dance music, so our performance is primarily strings using early 17th century bows, although a more complex orchestration is not incompatible with Praetorius's large scale works.

Michael Praetorius nació en Creuzburg (Turingia) en el seno de una estricta familia luterana, lo que determinó todo el curso de su carrera musical. Su padre había sido alumno de Martín Lutero y le había asistido en la confección del Himnario Luterano original.
Estudió en Torgau, Fráncfort del Oder y luego en Zerbst (Anhalt).

Michael Praetorius was one of the most important composers and theorists of the late renaissance and early-17th century. His astonishing encyclopedia of music gives us an intriguing glimpse into the instruments and performance practices of the time, and his writing covers all aspects of music. Praetorius wrote popular hymn settings, as well as large-scale compositions that borrowed elements of the polychoral Italian tradition. Praetorius was a tune collector, just like the musicologists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who collected songs and dances from different countries; he planned eight volumes of these secular works, but he only finished one: his book of French instrumental dances Terpsichore, named after the muse of dance (1612).
Orchestration: in the 1960s and 1970s, these works were heavily orchestrated--and conducted--in a neo-renaissance style. Although not grounded in historical performance, these orchestrations did, however, introduce a wider audience to the different kinds of instruments in the late renaissance and early baroque and helped popularize the music before Bach.
The string band at this time was the core group for dance dance music, so our performance is primarily strings using early 17th century bows, although a more complex orchestration is not incompatible with Praetorius's large scale works.

Alternatively, it is said that the original inhabitants of the island, Guanches, used to worship dogs, mummified them and treated dogs generally as holy animals.[22] The ancient Greeks also knew about a people, living far to the west, who are the "dog-headed ones", who worshipped dogs on an island.[22] Some hypothesize that the Canary Islands dog-worship and the ancient Egyptian cult of the dog-headed god, Anubis are closely connected[23] but there is no explanation given as to which one was first.
Other theories speculate that the name comes from a reported Berber tribe living in the Moroccan Atlas, named in Roman sources as Canarii. Though Pliny again mentions the relation of this term with dogs.

Michael Praetorius (Creuzburg, Turingia, 15 de febrero de 1571 - 15 de febrero de 1621) fue un compositor y organista alemán. Fue uno de los más versátiles compositores de su época e influyó en el desarrollo de formas basadas en himnos protestantes.
Michael Praetorius nació en Creuzburg (Turingia) en el seno de una estricta familia luterana, lo que determinó todo el curso de su carrera musical. Su padre había sido alumno de Martín Lutero y le había asistido en la confección del Himnario Luterano original.
Estudió en Torgau, Fráncfort del Oder y luego en Zerbst (Anhalt).
Fue organista en la Marienkirche antes de trabajar en la corte de Wolfenbüttel como organista, y desde 1604 tuvo el cargo de Maestro de capilla. De 1613 a 1616 trabajó en la corte sajona en Dresde, donde fue influido por los músicos italianos, incluyendo el estilo policoral de la Escuela de Venecia.
