The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the United Kingdom's aerial warfare force. Formed toward the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918, it is the oldest independent air force in the world. Following victory over the Central Powers in 1918 the RAF emerged as, at the time, the largest air force in the world. Since its formation, the RAF has taken a significant role in British military history, in particular, playing a large part in the Second World War where it fought its most famous campaign, the Battle of Britain.
The RAF's mission is to support the objectives of the British Ministry of Defence (MoD), which are to "provide the capabilities needed: to ensure the security and defence of the United Kingdom and overseas territories, including against terrorism; to support the Government’s foreign policy objectives particularly in promoting international peace and security." The RAF describe its mission statement as "... [to provide] An agile, adaptable and capable Air Force that, person for person, is second to none, and that makes a decisive air power contribution in support of the UK Defence Mission." The mission statement is supported by the RAF's definition of air power, which guides its strategy. Air power is defined as: "The ability to project power from the air and space to influence the behaviour of people or the course of events."
The Royal Air Force Museum London, commonly called the RAF Museum, is located on the former Hendon Aerodrome, with five major buildings and hangars dedicated to the history of aviation and the Royal Air Force. It is part of the Royal Air Force Museum, a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and a registered charity.
A second collection of exhibits, plus aircraft restoration facilities, is housed at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford at RAF Cosford in Shropshire, five miles northwest of Wolverhampton.
The museum was officially opened at the Colindale (then part of Hendon) London site on 15 November 1972 by Queen Elizabeth II. The hangars housed 36 aircraft at opening. Over the years, the collection increased, and aircraft not on display at Hendon were stored or displayed at smaller local RAF station museums.
The first Director of the Museum was Dr John Tanner who retired in 1987. In 1988, Dr Michael A. Fopp (who had previously directed the London Transport Museum) was appointed Director General of all three sites operated by the Museum. Retired Air Vice-Marshal Peter Dye replaced Fopp as Director General on 9 June 2010. In October 2014, it was announced that Maggie Appleton was to be appointed as CEO of the museum. Maggie took up the new role in January 2015, a departure from the traditional role of Director General which was held by Peter Dye until his retirement in late 2014.
An air force, also known in some countries as an air army, is in the broadest sense, the national military organization that primarily conducts aerial warfare. More specifically, it is the branch of a nation's armed services that is responsible for aerial warfare as distinct from an army, navy, or a marine corps. Typically, air forces are responsible for gaining control of the air, carrying out strategic and tactical bombing missions, and providing support to land and naval forces.
The term "air force" may also refer to a tactical air force or numbered air force, which is an operational formation either within a national air force or comprising several air components from allied nations. Air forces typically consist of a combination of fighters, bombers, helicopters, transport planes and other aircraft.
Many air forces are also responsible for operations of the military space, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), and communications equipment. Some air forces may command and control other air defence assets such as anti-aircraft artillery, surface-to-air missiles, or anti-ballistic missile warning networks and defensive systems. Some nations, principally Russia, the former Soviet Union and countries who modelled their militaries along Soviet lines, have an air defence force which is organizationally separate from their air force.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) museum, London, England. The Royal Air Force Museum is Britain’s only national museum dedicated wholly to aviation. With a world-class aircraft collection, integrated with special exhibitions, films, interactives, artwork, engines, missiles, photographs, uniforms, medals and research and education facilities, the Museum takes an innovative approach while keeping with tradition. While offering an insight into aviation technology, it focuses on the people who made it possible – from daredevil early aviators, through wartime heroes, to the thousands of Service men and women whose contribution shaped the world we live in today. The London site is situated on what used to be RAF Hendon. It holds over 100 aircraft in five themed aircraft halls. Our museum at Cosford...
A quick video tour of some of the exhibits in the RAF Museum at RAF Cosford. They have some fantastic & historic aeroplanes here! Sorry about the shit sound quality as I was using the cameras built-in mic as I wasn't planing on doing a video. It picks up autofocus noise and other shit. My excuse about the shit zooming is that the lens is new and the focus ring is still a bit stiff :) Thanks for watching :) Any feedback is appreciated! Filmed with a Canon EOS 70D and an EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens.
WOW, what an impressive museum, (as an Ex Navy man I choke to give praise to the RAF, LOL but here they have done a magnificent job). The second World War section is spectacular. As part of the Museum’s RAF Centenary Programme members of the Michael Beetham Conservation Centre are currently conducting a survey of the aircraft in the Museum’s Battle of Britain Hall prior to the creation of a new permanent exhibition in this area. In this short film Rebecca Dalley, the Museum’s Centenary Programme Manager, invites members of the public to peer beneath the skin of these iconic aircraft and partake in a once in a life-time opportunity to view their inner workings. The Museum would like to take this opportunity to thank Dan Freedman and British Forces TV www.bfbs.com for their assistance with the creation of this film.
The Royal Air Force Museum Channel exists to promote the objects from the Museum's collection at both sites; whilst providing a behind the scenes glimpse of how it operates. The American-built C-130 Hercules transport aircraft was an RAF workhorse well into the 21st Century from its UK debut in late 1966. Rugged, powerful, reliable and well-liked by its crews, this film uses archive footage and first-hand accounts to give some idea of the capabilities of Hercules and the sharp contrast between it and the aircraft that it replaced.

Private pilot travel vlog of the RAF museum in North London. The RAF Museum is an avgeek's paradise so I took myself up there on the tube to vlog my way around the Spitfires, Hurricanes, helicopters, Lancaster Bombers and more. If you're a pilot like me, or just a massive aviation tragic (also like me) and if you're in London this place is well worth a visit. Only 30 minutes on the tube from Central London and free entry (at the time of writing). Love planes? I like planes and especially war birds so had been looking forward to this visit for a long time. After the fun and games of the cab ride (see vlog # 34) we got there. As I entered the museum I noticed a sign saying it was closed? It shouldn't be closed as I checked the opening times etc on the internet before hand. I asked and was told it was still alright to look around so a woman told me but she didn't seem sure. So I entered and thought I would see as much as possible before somebody said otherwise. Historical television documentary on The Battle of Britain, fought between the British Royal Air Force and the Nazi Germany Luftwaffe in the between July and October 1940.
Everyone's leaving
The house is in mess
You and your magic friend
Chose to confront me folding the air into a dark affair
We need an air force
To gather the pieces, the love and the fear
I made your skin crawl on this night
Oh, my love
Lock up the doors
There's no easing the pain
Losing a life of games
Brought to impostures and comfort in death
You walk alone, my friend
We need an air force
To gather the pieces, the love and the fear
I made your skin crawl on this night
Oh, my love
Take off these sad clothes I need you to feel my despair Breaking the atmosphere
All of your talk of the dead will not stop
Breathe me like toxic love
We need an air force
To empty the streets with their naked machines
You made my skin crawl on this night
Oh, my love
We won't be air borne
Caught with the dust and the salt on the floor
We need an air force in this life
