The one fundamental truism of investing, and the one most often ignored, is this: the higher the returns, the higher the risk.
The past is littered with examples of when that rule was ignored. The stocks of dot-com companies raced to stratospheric heights in the late 1990s, until they came crashing to the ground. After a decade of astonishing growth in value, junk bonds defaulted en masse in 1989. Values in the housing market zoomed for years, until they grew unsteady in 2006 and then collapsed in 2008. The bottom-line message of history is that, if you're doubling and tripling your money in record time, you're also more likely to lose it all.
Which brings us to the Bitcoin craze and what is almost certain to be the coming debacle.
For those who don't know about Bitcoins, they are a brilliant technical concept designed to create a new, digital currency that essentially cuts out the middleman—values of Bitcoins are established online, peer to peer. There are no central banks, and at least for now, there is no government involvement. Like standard currency, Bitcoins can be traded or used for purchases, but only with those sellers who will accept them. Because it is a system independent of external meddling, there can be no sudden devaluation of Bitcoins through the actions of governments. (But make no mistake—there can be sudden devaluation of the currency through the actions of players in the Bitcoin market, and too many of them seem not to realize it. More on that below.) The values are not pegged to any existing currency; instead, members in the Bitcoin market establish the exchange rate through simple supply and demand—when the number of people wanting Bitcoins grows faster than the availability, the values go up.
Most of the discussion and commentary about Bitcoins focuses on the coolness of their creation and the operation of the market. And there is no disputing that those are cool. The currency and the technological means for using it were suggested in 2008 by a person or people who went by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto—to date, no one has discovered Nakamoto's true identity. (Warning No. 1: If you can't find out who actually developed a financial instrument, steer clear.) The market became operational in 2009. In order to join the Bitcoin playground, users have to download some open-source software, which is then stored in a digital wallet. (Warning No. 2: If a hacker can steal all of your money by accessing your computer, steer clear.) bitcoin collapse currency support "digital currency" gold silver "federal reserve" "gold bullion" "silver coin" hype trendy "stock market" stocks insider mainstream system alternative crazy price "bitcoin price" buying selling "fiat currency" usd dollar globalist u.s. The means of conducting the transactions is highly complex—far beyond the scope of any single blog posting—but there are plenty of places online to learn the technical details. Still, one important element that needs to be understood is that the only means of producing more of the currency, and thus increasing the supply, is through operators of systems that validate Bitcoin transactions. These people, known as "miners," use powerful computers within the Bitcoin network that perform complex mathematical calculations to establish the validity of transactions. The miners do this work voluntarily, but, at certain steps along the way, they are rewarded with 50 newly created Bitcoins. That adds to the available amount of the currency, but the total possible number of Bitcoins is capped at 21 million; there are now 11 million Bitcoins in circulation.
It's been a great past few weeks if you're a holder (or hoarder) of Bitcoins. The value of a single Bitcoin surpassed $200 today on the Mt. Gox exchange, yet another impressive milestone for the virtual currency.
Bitcoin is an unregulated, decentralized currency and people can use it to make international monetary transfers that are free, instantaneous, and hard to trace. One might think the currency would be relegated to criminals and hackers, but it has gained a higher profile thanks to media coverage (ours included) and because many legitimate businesses, including Reddit and Expensify, have recently started accepting Bitcoin as a payment option.

Lyrics:
Six shards of life, from cradle to dust
I see the scythe drawing near
The bull's-eye looms, so austere
Going out with a bang and a deadly sneer
A bitter end made so sweet
But then I see them
Seeking me, so I may find my only answer
Taunting me, so I'll never play the cards
Calling me so I can see the darkness up ahead
Gambling with the reaper
Their eyes betray, all the suffering and pain
Preaching such judgment, unending
Their words aggravate the air that surrounds me
A dirge of morals so empty
Seeking me, so I may find my only answer
Taunting me, so I'll never play the cards
Calling me so I can see the darkness up ahead
Gambling with the reaper

SC5 Halby: SimCity 5 (2013) Beginner's Guide to Gambling
Hey Hey we're the monkeeeys, so simcity is a sandbox game with lots of super easy ways to make the game way too easy and not at all fun... it's up to YOU to play in a way that makes the game fun, cuz if you just min-max you'll soon find that you have infinite cash and no challenge whatsoever. So the self-set mini-challenge I've got going here, is 'how much cash per month can you get in a gambling city with no public transit (except train stations) while maintaining a local population of 80,000 or more.'
For added challenge, I could (but didn't this time) say that the # of workers vs jobs must be within 10% (this allows you to avoid too many commuters clogging your ever important tourist traffic, and plus it's just more fun to play this way).
So, the most important thing in any challenge is traffic, we begin by getting enough $ to skeleton our city, then we use that cash to layout a reasonable traffic-proof grid.
one important way to reduce traffic is to realize that shoppers and workers are 'called' by their destinations from their homes, and there are 2 calls, first a 2-block radius call for 'walkers' and then a full-map radius call for everyone else... That means we can completely eliminate road traffic of shoppers by making sure to have a place to shop within 2 blocks of every household. (everyone will walk to the store).
We can then eliminate education traffic by avoiding college/universities, and relying solely on school buses. Now our only traffic is commuters... so we seperate our commuter traffic and our gambling traffic, and now our gambling infrastructure has 0 traffic, except that of tourists. yay.
So, now we need to setup a tourist 'draw'... each gambling house, or culture building you place draws in tourists, usually far fewer tourists than it services, so if you JUST plop those things, they will all be less than half full, and you'll lose gobs of cash... so we're going to use 2 primary additional tourist draw sources... #1) commercial zones... over-zone commercial in your residential areas, more than you would for a different type of city... lots of commercial. Each commercial building draws a certain # of tourists. and #2) expo center/stadium/performance based culture buildings like the globe theater.
Once we've drawn tourists into our city, the next step is to TRAP them. tourist trap. bam. your commercial buidings are a huge tourist draw, but you don't actually want any tourists to visit them, because that helps the commercial district, but does not help YOU. your tourists enter the map via highway or train, and then head to the nearest tourist building, be it a commercial building, or a gambling house... so we want to surround the entrances of our city with tourist traps.
after shopping, gambling, or watching a game, any tourists who still have money are gonna want to stay in a hotel, so that they can spend the rest of their money the next day... you can let the commercial district hotels serve this purpose if you want, but if you do, then when the tourists wake up they will go shopping at the closest shop to that hotel, which will most likely not be a gambling house. So let's set up our own state-funded hotels near the gambling.
finally, we re-visit traffic. tourists who arrive by train, will walk to a gambling center/stadium/expo center. tourists who arrived via walking to an expo center, will attempt to walk to a hotel. but no matter whether a tourist arrived via walking, or driving... when they leave a hotel, they leave by car! and they won't use the train to leave the city unless the train station is significantly closer to their hotel than the highway exit... this means it's very easy to choke and die on masses of exiting tourists, even though you had almost no traffic when those tourists entered your city. to counter this we want to put all of our state funded hotels right next to train stations (in this example, on the far right and far left of the map)

Senator presents bill to legalize gambling in Texas
A lawmaker in Texas is seeking to legalize gambling in the State of Texas. The bill, proposed by Sen. John Carona (R-Dallas) would open up 21 casinos and create a state-wide gaming commission.
On Monday, Senator Carona said that big casinos, race tracks and Native American groups had agreed to support his constitutional amendment, giving the bill a big boost. Lubbock citizens, however, had mixed feelings about opening the door to gambling in the state.
"I don't like gambling so I would not support it," said Lubbock resident Dustyn Webb. "I think it's for ignorant people that just lose their money and it punishes the people that aren't educated."
Lubbock resident Bill Martinez feels that if people are going to gamble, Texas may as well keep the revenue in-state. "I hate to see our money go somewhere else. I would like to see it here for our tax purposes."
According to TXP, an Austin-based economic analysis firm, 41.6% of the gaming revenue for Louisiana in 2012 came from Texans. In Oklahoma, that number was 42.9% and in New Mexico it was 13.9%. The total amount of revenue spent by Texans on gambling in these 3 states equaled three billion dollars, dollars that Carona feels should stay in Texas.
His bill allots for 20% of all revenue to go to the state, so against 2012 numbers, Texas could see $600,000,000. In addition, application and owner fees would go to a Texas Casino and Slot Gaming fund and any extra revenue would be transferred to the General Revenue fund. Representative Charles Perry, however, is skeptical of the benefits for Texans.
"Currently, there is a constitutional amendment making its way through the legislative process that would allow for resort casinos and racetrack gambling. Looking at other states that have legalized gambling, the risk factors seem to outweigh any benefits and I oppose any measure that would have negative impacts on our economy," he said in a statement to KCBD.
Las Vegas style luxury casinos could be built in Tarrant, Dallas and Bexar Counties if the bill passes, with no more than two applications per county allowed. Local resident Ed Chatman feels it would help Lubbock's economy if that state built a casino in Lubbock County. "I think it would be great for our city. It would provide jobs, tax revenue and I think it has a good chance to pass."
If the bill passes with a two-thirds majority at the House and Senate, it will be brought before the voters this November where they will get the final say in the matter.

The Gamblers - Addiction, Lottery, and Hollywood
Gambling. It's enormously fun for many and even an occupation for some, but what happens when you become addicted to it? What is the driving force behind gambling addiction? What happens in the brain to compel gambling addicts to keep gambling, no matter what the consequences are? And lotteries are run by the government and only the government-- why is this, and is it truly fair? And lastly, how is gambling and how are gamblers portrayed in movies? Are the portrayals accurate, and why are gambling movies so emotionally vested?
Ana Kasparian (Host, The Point and Co-host of The Young Turks) lead this weeks panel to discuss these issues and more with Annie Duke (Professional poker player), Tim Fong (UCLA Gambling Studies Program Co-Founder) and Michael Shure (Current TV political commentator).
