Like the deserts miss the rain: landscape change and climate variability in the world's drylands
David Nash - Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Brighton, presented his inaugural lecture on Thursday 17 November 2011 entitled: Like the deserts miss the rain: landscape change and climate variability in the world's drylands.
Deserts are defined scientifically as areas that experience an annual moisture deficit. Paradoxically, water plays a vital role in shaping dryland landscapes. It acts as a solvent, slowly dissolving minerals and transporting them to sites where they may be deposited as near-surface crusts that bind soils and sediments together.
On a larger scale, periods of above-normal rainfall may stimulate vegetation growth and limit the effects of the wind. Water is also vital for maintaining life, so much so that the historical writings of desert dwellers can be used to reconstruct past climate variations.
Drawing upon 20 years of research in the drylands of southern Africa, South America and southern Europe, this lecture explores some of these themes and considers the future for the world's drylands.

Allan Savory: How to green the world's deserts and reverse climate change
"Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert," begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert.

LEGO Star Wars Battle Scene MOCTips (Introductory): Episode #1- Desert Climate [Feat. jamesuniverse]
Welcome to the all new Video Segement were you will receive tips on how to make your Star Wars battle MOCs the be they can be. In this Episode features comments from jamesuniverse on scenery and comments from myself on how the battlefield layout should be. For this Episode I used my Jaguada CTF MOC as a basic scene reference.
Key Points to Remember:
1. Smaller Buiding Area The Better
2. When Doing Desert Landscape Layering is Crucial
3. Don't Overdo The Figure Placement

Gardening Tips : How to Grow Grass in a Desert Climate
Growing grass in a desert climate involves starting the lawn in the middle of winter to help it grow healthier before the heat of the summer, and adding a tree to the lawn provides much-needed shade for grass to grow well. Plant grass in a desert climate, where the timing is crucial, with advice from a sustainable gardener in this free video on gardening.

MBR wastewater treatment plant in remote desert climate - success and lessons learned
It was the first community MBR wastewater treatment plant in Saudi Aramco. A successful story with many valuable lessons learned. Udhailiyah STP used to be a secondary packaged wastewater treatment plant which does not meet Saudi Arabia government and Saudi Aramco effluent requirements/standards for re-use in unrestricted irrigation. Plant effluent was disposed off into a huge evaporation ponds and never reused except for small quantities for in-plant irrigation. The plant is located in a remote area with little or no nearby residential development. Saudi Aramco environmental policies and government regulations necessitate expanding the plant and upgrading the treatment process to provide tertiary quality effluent meeting BOD, TSS, ammonia, nitrate allowable limits which makes it suitable for unrestricted irrigation. This paper will share with you the lessons learned from upgrading the existing package wastewater treatment plant to a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) .This includes wastewater plant technology selection, designing, construction, commissioning and start-up of the plant. These lessons will improve the knowledge and understanding for achieving future successful jobs. The project started in July 2007 and was completed in November 2010. The biggest challenges during the expansion work were the construction phasing needed to minimize interference or interruption to the operation of the existing plant, working in remote desert climate and meeting the completion schedule. Who should attend Design and project engineers, professionals involved in operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant, ,construction contractor's key personals ,students and persons involve in wastewater plant technology selection, designing , construction , commissioning and startup

Home Siding Reno-able to withstand the dry desert climate
http://www.sunkisthomeimprovements.com/
Our Nevada climate is notorious for ruining siting on the sides of homes. Because of our dry climate very few substances can survive and look good for very long. We here at Sun-Kist Home Improvements are experts at installing the very latest in siding technology on your home and that will increase the value of your home and the R-value of your insulation.
Our solid core vinyl siding system interlocks together and it is extremely durable, able to withstand over 240% more impact than fiber cement or vinyl siding can. It can also withstand the dramatic wins that we get here. But most importantly it can withstand our dry climate and 300+ days of sunshine a year!
Call Bill Hale at Sun-Kist Home Improvements today at 775-856-4444 to get a hassle free quote on what it would take to completely remake the look of your home and increase its value.

THE MIRACLE WATER VILLAGE
As the world reels under the threat of unrelenting climate change, erratic monsoons and fast depleting groundwater reserves, The Miracle Water Village narrates the inspirational story of impoverished farming community in India that reversed its fortunes through its visionary model of water management.
Lying in one of the worst drought-prone regions of India, the village of Hiware Bazar battled many decades of sparse rain and failed crops. However, 20 years ago, the entire village came together to script a silent revolution by designing a rainwater-harvesting model that saved every drop of the scanty rain they received. Today, the village is literally an oasis in the middle of the desert, boasting of bumper harvests, dairy co-operatives, millionaire families and visionary farmers.
Hiware Bazar still receives the scanty amount of rainfall it used to in the heart of its most trying years, but what has changed is the way it has managed its water and created a miracle with this most precious liquid resource!

Once the scene of devastating droughts in 1984, a few visionaries in Ethiopia have used Agroecological Natural Technology Solutions and Permaculture Design principles to begin bringing areas of arid land back to productivity and ecological balance.
Restoring the huge vast degradaded landscape of Ethiopia... critical for the entire region to support life. The impact is regional, national, and international.
We can rehabilitate damaged ecosystems. We can transfer technology and capital to empower the local people to restore their own environment to ensure food security for people who are chronically hungry, while at the same time sequestering carbon, reducing biodiversity loss, mitigate against flooding, drought and famine. This can be done on a global scale.
We can do this with the simple application of Agricultural Natural Technology Solutions and Permaculture Design principles, such as earthworks, water harvesting, soil building, creating biodiversity.
Anybody can take a Permaculture Design Course and learn how to do this in their local area or internationally. There are over 1,000 such courses taught all over the world each year. You can find one here: http://permacultureglobal.com/users or take one online: http://permaculturevisions.com
It is time to solve hunger worldwide, through creating local food abundance.... Anyone can do it, once you learn how.

Climate Disaster: Snow in Namibia Desert
Tension Territories in Namibian desert, one of the most arid place on earth were covered with snow. Photos with zebras that graze among the snow banks, seem unreal.
A storm swept over Namibia and has brought with it snow. The weather turned suddenly cold, temperatures reaching below zero in places where there is often 48 degrees Celsius.
Meteorologists announced thet this is an extremely rare phenomenon.
Snow also fell near Johannesburg, South Africa, where there were only five such events since 1956 till now.
Snow also fell in Lesotho, also in South-African.
