Herod the Great
Herod (Hebrew: הוֹרְדוֹס, Hordos, Greek: Ἡρῴδης, Hērōdēs), also known as Herod the Great (born 73 or 74 BCE, died 4 BCE in Jericho[1]), was a Roman client king of Judea.[2][3][4] His epithet of "the Great" is widely disputed as he is described as "a madman who murdered his own family and a great many rabbis."[5][6][7] He is also known for his colossal building projects in Jerusalem and elsewhere, including his expansion of the Second Temple in Jerusalem (sometimes referred to as Herod's Temple) and the construction of the port at Caesarea Maritima. Important details of his biography are gleaned from the works of the 1st century CE Roman-Jewish historian Josephus Flavius.
The Romans made Herod's son Herod Archelaus ethnarch of Judea, Samaria, and Idumea (biblical Edom) from 4 BCE to 6 CE, referred to as the tetrarchy of Judea. Archelaus was judged incompetent by the Roman emperor Augustus who then combined Samaria, Judea proper and Idumea into Iudaea province[8] under rule of a prefect until 41. Herod's other son Herod Antipas was tetrarch of Galilee from 4 BCE -- 39 CE.
Herod was born around 74 BCE in the south (Idumea was the most southern region).[9][10] He was the second son of Antipater the Idumaean, a high-ranked official under Ethnarch Hyrcanus II, and Cypros, a Nabatean. Herod was practicing Judaism, as many Edomites and Nabateans had been commingled with the Jews and adopted their customs.[11] These "Judanized" Edomites were not considered Jewish by the dominant Pharisaic tradition, so even though Herod may have considered himself of the Jewish faith, he was not considered Jewish by the observant and nationalist Jews of Judea.[12] A loyal supporter of Hyrcanus II, Antipater appointed Herod governor of Galilee at 25, and his elder brother, Phasael, governor of Jerusalem. He enjoyed the backing of Rome but his brutality was condemned by the Sanhedrin.[

He enjoyed the backing of Rome but his brutality was condemned by the Sanhedrin.[13]
Two years later Antigonus, Hyrcanus' nephew, took the throne from his uncle with the help of the Parthians. Herod fled to Rome to plead with the Romans to restore him to power. There he was elected "King of the Jews" by the Roman Senate.[14] Josephus puts this in the year of the consulship of Calvinus and Pollio (40 BCE), but Appian places it in 39 BCE.[10] Herod went back to Judea to win his kingdom from Antigonus and at the same time he married the teenage niece of Antigonus, Mariamne (known as Mariamne I), in an attempt to secure a claim to the throne and gain some Jewish favor. However, Herod already had a wife, Doris, and a three-year-old son, Antipater, and chose therefore to banish Doris and her child.
Three years later, Herod and the Romans finally captured Jerusalem and executed Antigonus. Herod took the role as sole ruler of Judea and the title of basileus (Gr. Βασιλευς, king) for himself, ushering in the Herodian Dynasty and ending the Hasmonean Dynasty. Josephus reports this as being in the year of the consulship of Agrippa and Gallus (37 BCE), but also says that it was exactly 27 years after Jerusalem fell to Pompey, which would indicate 36 BCE. (Cassius Dio also reports that in 37 "the Romans accomplished nothing worthy of note" in the area.[15]) According to Josephus, he ruled for 37 years, 34 years of them after capturing Jerusalem.
Model of Herod's Temple
As Herod's family had converted to Judaism, his religious commitment had come into question by some elements of Jewish society.[16] When John Hyrcanus conquered the region of Idumaea (the Edom of the Hebrew Bible) in 140--130 BCE, he required all Idumaeans to obey Jewish law or to leave; most Idumaeans thus converted to Judaism, which meant that they had to be circumcised.[17] While King Herod publicly identified himself as a Jew and was considered as such by some,[18] this religious identification was undermined by the decadent lifestyle of the Herodians, which would have earned them the antipathy of observant Jews.[19]
Herod later executed several members of his own family, including his wife Mariamne I.

The best contradiction against Christians
This is a contradiction which can not be countered with the usual "mistranslation" or "copyist error" or any other typical apologetic response. This contradiction is quite simple: Either Matthew got it wrong, Luke got it wrong, or they BOTH got it wrong!
Some common attempts at rebuttals:
"It's not Herod the Great."
If you look at Matthew 2:22 you'll see a reference to Archelaus and "his father" Herod. Archelaus was the son of Herod THE GREAT and brother to Antipas. Antipas is mentioned in 14:1-2. So YES, it IS Herod the Great.
"Quirinius was governor twice."
This is an assertion which has nothing to support it other than more assertions.
"It didn't mean 'governor' but instead 'one who governs'...so it could have been a lesser office of power."
Luke only makes ONE reference to Quirinius and it's to establish that he was governor of Syria at the time. If he were in any less of an office, the entire point of bringing up his name would be worthless. It would be the same as pointing out that there was an attack on American soil when Obama was a Senator in an article that isn't about Obama and we never reference him again. If we are trying to attach a political figure to establish roughly when it happened (as Luke is obviously doing) we would name President Bush, not someone else.

http://michaelrood.tv/store/video.html
Yahshua the Messiah (aka Jesus) declared that here would be only one sign of his authenticity: Three days and three nights in the grave - and rising on the third day. Tragically, inherited ignorance of the Creators reckoning of time and mindless attachment to pagan traditions have left the Christian Church system unable to count to three!!
Michael Rood strips away 2,000 years of fossilized traditions to reveal profound truths in the Gospels which have eluded Western Christianity for millennia. Michael exposes one of the greatest deceptions foisted upon the Christian world: the blatantly insupportable three and one half year ministry of Jesus and the eight infamous words that were deliberately forged into later texts of Johns Gospel which destroyed the chronological integrity of the Gospels, formed the crumbling foundations of replacement theology, and left the end-time prophecies of Daniel in shambles!
Join Michael for two action-packed evenings as he exposes and corrects the fatal error in Western Christianity while unveiling mathematical proofs and astronomical confirmations from the Hebrew Scriptures that were concealed until the end of the age. This is Bible Prophecy 401.

Herod's during the time of Jesus:
Herod the Great (37-4 B.C.)
Herod Archelaus (4 B.C. - A.D. 6)
Herod Philip (4B.C.- A.D. 34 A.D.)
Herod Antipas (4 B.C.- A.D. 39)
Herod Agrippa I (A.D. 41-44)
Herod Arippa II (A.D. 49-93)
Historians show that Census were done by the Herod. And in fact, given the timings and framework for them, the general time of Jesus birth falls in line.
TruthSpeaker not only uses logic fallacies but inaccurate historical information.

Matthew 2.13-23 - God Cares
We all doubt that God cares, because we do not see much of it in our world. We lose confidence that God is working things out for our Good and that of course in contrary to reality. For God to care it means that his justice, wrath, punishment, and condemnation are done because he delights in revealing himself to People especially those who trust him and His son -- Jesus Christ. In Matthew 2:13-23, God care can be seen in His preservation of his people, in His salvation of his people, in His support of His people.
We see that God cares because he protects. He does so in his revelation in Scripture. God is sovereign and shows his care in preserving the Messiah in Egypt (see also Gen 46 for another example). Many today question God's care, but Christians know that we must not put God on trial. When we question God's motives like this, we are saying that we know better than God does. That is the gist of the argument that Paul declares in Romans 9:19-20 (see also Dan 4:3-5) against the antagonist who doesn't believe God can be just and render certain the salvation of his elect. Nothing man can do can thwart God's plan in this world to accomplish what his beneficial to the display of his glory and the salvation of all whosoever believes in Christ. Herod, on the other hand, wanted to protect his own kingdom and had the audacity to act like a fool. Did he think he could protect his own rule better than God can protect any of his Children and especially the Live of His only Son? Mathew quotes Hosea 11:1 to indicate that God is fulfilling prophecy in calling His Son out of Egypt. The story of Hosea shows how God like Hosea, can show mercy and compassionate care to rebellious, untrue, and enslaved people (like Gomer and us). He is declaring that Israel is a type of Christ -- the person of salvation instead of the place of salvation. Jesus is the new Moses. God cares because he preserves and protects those that that know Him.
We see that God cares because he saves. God save people from sin -- form their own passion for dishonor, from their own willful slavery to sin. Men today are foolish to not recognize their need of Christ. Like Herod, they cannot understand God, nor do they see the higher hand of God working in all things according to his providential care. Foolishness is illustrated by Herod who failed to learn one cannot stay and frustrate God's hand. Even thought his first attempt to kill Jesus by lying to the wise men failed, he kept on trying by killing all the children under 2 years of age. Matthew quotes Jeremiah 31:15 to give people hope not doubt, because this rather negative very in "snack dab" in the middle of the proclamation of God saving power in the new covenant. Even though Rachael was crying because of the sons of Israel were taken captive to Babylon (see Jer. 40:1-5 for the time of Jeremiah's prophecy), God was telling Israel and all believer to lift up their heads because the salvation of the Lord is coming. Rachael is the ideal mom of the Jews, who was buried near Ramah (5 miles north of Jerusalem) should not look at the current situation but realize that God is going to restore Israel in the future by the means of the New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31ff), which we realize today in Hebrews 10:16-17 and 8:8-12. God does have a play of hope and cares because he saves those that know Him.
Finally, we see that God cares in his support of his people. God cares because he is the divine servant. This is the fifth fulfilled prophecy in Matthew 1-2 and 3rd in Matthew 2:13-18. God has promised by his prophets that his Son would be born a virgin, in Bethlehem, called out of Egypt, save his people, and grow up in Nazareth (notice the plural form of the word here indicated that this last prophecy was a common prophecy). Of course to a Jews at that time Nazareth is a derogatory term of insignificance or uselessness (see John 1:46). God continues to reveal to Joseph his plan in supporting them. God tells Joseph not to return to Jerusalem or Bethlehem but to go to Nazareth. After Herod the Great's death, His providence was split up into three sections with Philip ruling in the North, Herod Antipas ruling in Galilee area, and Herod Archelaus ruling in Judah. Herod Archelaus was as cruel as His father and Joseph also knew that is would not be save for them to live under his rule All this was to fulfill the prophets (see Ps:22:2-8, 13, Isa. 49:7). Christ in growing up in Nazareth shows his humility and announced the Kingdom of God to the world as a despised servant. God does care because he supports those who know him.

Escape to Egypt
Herod said he wanted to worship Jesus!, but that wasn't what he really wanted to do. How would Mary and Joseph protect their son from Herod's plan to kill him?
Matthew 2:13-23
The Escape to Egypt
After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother," the angel said. "Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."
That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother, and they stayed there until Herod's death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: "I called my Son out of Egypt."e
Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men's report of the star's first appearance. Herod's brutal action fulfilled what God had spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:
"A cry was heard in Ramah—
weeping and great mourning.
Rachel weeps for her children,
refusing to be comforted,
for they are dead."f
The Return to Nazareth
When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. "Get up!" the angel said. "Take the child and his mother back to the land of Israel, because those who were trying to kill the child are dead."
So Joseph got up and returned to the land of Israel with Jesus and his mother. But when he learned that the new ruler of Judea was Herod's son Archelaus, he was afraid to go there. Then, after being warned in a dream, he left for the region of Galilee. So the family went and lived in a town called Nazareth. This fulfilled what the prophets had said: "He will be called a Nazarene."
God sent a angel to warn Joseph! Through this warning God rescuded Jesus! and his family from danger. Today's world is still filled with harmful situations and people. But God rescues his people. Rely on him! God will watch over you!
Paslm 91:14
The Lord says, "I will rescue those who love me, I will protect those who trust in my name!
And thats our Bible reading for today! OK! BYE!

The 'Praise the Lord' Challenge Met
Hello Mike Mickey(sp?),
Since you are the one uploading these videos on behalf of the people without cameras; then can you please forward this response to "Brother Todd"? I do not require a video response, unless it is from "Brother Todd" himself. Oh, and I noticed that he was holding the KJ study bible(which comes with commentary). I can translate some of the Hebrew or Greek for him if need be to better help him discern what the book says.
P.S.
I entreat you, Todd and anyone else to read each book mentioned in its entirety. And please do not cherry-pick what only sounds pleasing to you.
Thank you

Who is the father of Joseph?
MAT 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
LUK 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli.
Did those with Saul/Paul at his conversion hear a voice?
ACT 9:7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.
ACT 22:9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
Was there different languages or not?
Gen 10:5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.
Gen 10:20 These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.
Gen 10:31 These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.
Gen 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

Addendum:
This is not mentioned in the video but since I was on the subject of the lineage of jesus; I figured that I would add a fourth contradiction.
god said thru Nathan, that the messiah would come through the [seed] of David (2 Samuel 7:12-14) which is later reiterated in (Acts 2:29-30), and (Acts 13:22-23).
Now since both contradictory genealogies listed in Mathew and Luke are supposed to be that of Joseph, and because Jewish tradition/law dictates that "tribal identification" only comes from the fathers side. And as Joseph was not the biological father of jesus[virgin birth remember ;O)], we have another clear contradiction.
-------
And while I am partially on the subject of the Nativity... ;O)
I will list yet another contradiction/errency found in the new testament:
"The Census of Quirinius" which was taken by Quirinius after he became governor of Syria due to the banishment of "Herod Archelaus"; son of king Herod. Which is confirmed/recorded by Josephus(a Jewish historian) in 6-7 A.D. Ultimately proving/confirming that "Herod the great" died 10 years before the fabled jesus was born, disproving the biblical account, and contradicting the fictional gods characters prediction as detailed in Matt 2:12-15
All of which is better described(to a order of magnitude) in the following videos:
/watch?v=jTi75qaR2T8
/watch?v=m0eyzG1xWJQ
and
/watch?v=65_DNs4ot5E
-------
And since I am on the subject of the jesus character; I will list yet another contradiction/errency found in the new testament:
The jesus character departs/ascends to heaven the same day(in the evening) he had risen from the dead as detailed in Luke 24:1-53
Which is clearly contradicted in Acts 1:1-26(Acts 1:3 in particular) where the jesus character stays among the 11 apostles for forty days.
----
And then there is the contradiction of how the remaining 11 apostles received the holy spirit/ghost. ;O)
John 2o:21-23 which contradicts Acts 2:1-4
----
Here are some direct biblical errors:
Matt 4:8 Since there is no spot on the spheroid earth to [view all kingdoms] we see that the bible errs here.
John 12:21 Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee... The clear error here lies in the fact that Bethsaida actually reside in Gaulanitis(Golan region) which is east of the river Jordan; whereas Galliliee resides west of the river Jordan.
----
Here are yet two other clear contradictions found in the bible but from the old testament this time:
What the fictional god character commands of Abraham in Genesis 22:1-2 clearly contradicts what it(god) said in Jeremiah 19:4-5.
-AND-
Matthew 19:26 as opposed to Judges 1:19
Are all things possible by god of the bible or not?
-AND-
2 Samuel 24 as opposed to 1 Chronicles 21
So who was it; god or satan that [moved] David to number(take a census) Israel?
There are technically 4 additional contradictions just within the pages of these two chapters, but I think that my point was made. ;O)

contra JohnLarmstrong episode 6
I contradict John with FACTS!
I must say I am impressed by the fact that I was forced to do more research for this video than any other in response to JLarmstrong, possibly because John's objections are so tightly woven with eachother.
ADDENDUM: when 2 works of history contradict eachother, we don't throw them out, we find out which one is right, and even then we still assume that details on which they agree are in fact historical. even if all these contradictions were irreconciliable, we still have several historical facts to be gained from the closing chapters of the canonical Gospels, and that is Jesus lived, Jesus died, was buried, his tomb was found empty, and finally that he made appearances to his disciples.

Was there a massacre around the time of Jesus birth?
http://forerunner.com
This is another clip from The Real Jesus.
Was there really a "Massacre of the Innocents" in Bethlehem around the time of Jesus' birth?
According to Matthew chapter 2, in the days of Herod the Great, astrological portents brought Magi from the east naively inquiring about a newborn King. Ironically, this triggered a reaction from Herod that closely resembled the events surrounding Augustus Caesar's own birth.
Most liberals will say that the so-called "Massacre of the Innocents" is a myth. However, they are using the "argument from silence" fallacy. There is only one account of this isolated event in a small country that isn't recorded elsewhere. But that doesn't disprove Matthew's account by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, the massacring of infants was a common practice in Roman days.
According to Julius Marathus, a personal confidant of Augustus Caesar, the Roman Senate ordered all the baby boys killed who were born in 63 B.C. because prophetic dreams and astrological signs suggested that a "King of the Romans" was to be born.
Ironically, Augustus was born on Sept. 23 of that year! Since we only have one account of this event, do we discount this massacre as well? No, historians accept Suetonius as generally reliable.
So all things being equal, Herod's "Massacre of the Innocents" recorded in Matthew 2 is not a myth.
The following is from Suetonius, The Divine Augustus, 94:
"Since we are upon this subject, it may not be improper to give an account of the omens, before and at his birth, as well as afterwards, which gave hopes of his future greatness, and the good fortune that constantly attended him. A part of the wall of Velletri having in former times been struck with thunder, the response of the soothsayers was, that a native of that town would some time or other arrive at supreme power; relying on which prediction, the Velletrians both then, and several times afterwards, made war upon the Roman people, to their own ruin. At last it appeared by the event, that the omen had portended the elevation of Augustus.
"Julius Marathus informs us, that a few months before his birth, there happened at Rome a prodigy, by which was signified that Nature was in travail with a king for the Roman people; and that the senate, in alarm, came to the resolution that no child born that year should be brought up; but that those amongst them, whose wives were pregnant, to secure to themselves a chance of that dignity, took care that the decree of the senate should not be registered in the treasury."

The Year of the Lord's Return - An understanding - Jacques More
This video gives an Understanding possible out of Daniel 9:1-26 for the YEAR of the LORD's RETURN
Details of interest:
A week SHABUA = a SEVENs
Daniel 9:25 and (62X7= 434) + (7X7= 49) = 483
Artaxerxes came to throne 474BC
So, the 20th year of his reign is 454BC as per Nehemiah 2:1-6 when the command to rebuild Jerusalem was given as per Daniel 9:25
Jesus 1st Coming
483 years - 454BC = 29AD
If Jesus was born in 4BC then 29AD is the year of the crucifixion and fulfilment to the year and the month (Nisan as per Nehemiah 2:1) of the portion of prophecy given to Daniel in 9:24-26
Daniel 9:24 and 70X7 = 490
Jesus 2nd Coming
70 X 7 of 7s of years just like EACH year of exile represented 7 spent in the land of Israel without a Sabbath for the land given = 490 X 7 = 3430
3430 - 454BC = 2976AD in the 2nd ½ of the 30th Century AD.
If 4004BC is the year of the Creation and man has been given 7,000 years to rule, then this approximate pointer to the year of the Lords rule beginning is also an indicator: i.e. a 7 is a complete amount in the Hebrew mindset: this is why creating in 6 days made a day missing 'GLARING' as a period of CEASING: a Sabbath

1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east[b] and have come to worship him."
3When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ[c] was to be born. 5"In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:
6" 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'[d]"
7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."
9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east[e] went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Escape to Egypt
13When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." 14So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."[f]
16When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18"A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."[g]
The Return to Nazareth
19After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."
21So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."

QUIRINIUS GOVERNS X2 - FALSE HEROD DEATH IN 4 BCE!
To ProfMTH, resolution of Luke 2:2 reference to a previous governorship by Quirinius in 2 BC, and the corrected dating of Herod's death on Shebat 2, 1 AD. Thus the conflict between the gospels and secular history are related to the revision of Herod's death back to 3 BCE from 1 AD. However, the true date is easily recovered via Josephus' cryptic references including a lunar eclipse that can only be matched to 1 BCE, confirming Herod's original date of death to 1 AD.

Historical Errors / Contradictions of Luke Pt 1
Luke 3:1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
Luke 3:2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
Lysanias was not the tetrarch of Abilene in the year 29 CE as stated by Luke. He was killed by Marc Anthony in 36 BCE.
"And as she (CLEOPATRA) went over Syria with him (Marc Anthony), she contrived to get it into her possession; so he slew Lysanias, the son of Ptolemy, accusing him of his bringing the Parthians upon those countries. She also petitioned Antony to give her Judea and Arabia; and, in order thereto, desired him to take these countries away from their present governors." (Josephus-Antiquties, Book 15, Chapter 4, Paragraph 1)
Lysanias was called "king of the Itureans" by Dio Cassius (xlix. 32).
