Charles H. Townes was born in Greenville, South Carolina, July 28, 1915, and grew up on a farm.
Townes studied at Furman and Duke Universities, then headed west to Cal Tech.
After getting his Ph.D., Townes moved back east to work for Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. As America prepared for World War Two, theoretical physics had to take a back seat to application. Townes worked on radar.
After the war, Townes became a professor at Columbia University, where his experience in radar led to the idea for the MASER, which stands for "Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation," a device that transformed microwaves into an intense, coherent stream.
There were skeptics, such as Niels Bohr, but according to Einstein (and Townes) the maser was indeed possible.
MASER technology led to the LASER, "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation," created by manipulating the quantum state of atoms, forcing them to emit a concentrated beam of light.
In 1964, Charles Townes shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on maser and laser devices.
From 1966 until 1970, Townes was Chairman of NASA's Science Advisory Committee for the Apollo lunar landing program. And in 1967, he accepted a position at the University of California at Berkeley, to study astronomy.
Dr. Townes encourages public interest in scientific discovery and emphasizes the benefits. Engineering and science go hand in hand to improve society. Townes' protégées include Arno Penzias, proponent of the "Big Bang Theory." Townes is known for his views on the compatibility of science and religion. In 2005, the Templeton Prize for "Progress Toward Research or Discoveries about Spiritual Realities" was awarded to Charles Townes. He is the only person other than the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa to win both a Templeton Prize and a Nobel Prize.

He shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1964 with Nikolay Basov and Alexander Prokhorov. Between 1966 and 1970 he was chairman of the NASA Science Advisory Committee for the Apollo lunar landing program. In 1961, he was voted Time Person of the Year. At the age of 98, he is still on staff at the University California at Berkeley.

On the occasion of its 50th birthday, meet Charles Townes, who shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics for its invention. Still an active researcher in astronomy, he will discuss the history of the laser and its current application to the measurement of the shapes and sizes of stars.

Townes studied at Furman and Duke Universities, then headed west to Cal Tech.
After getting his Ph.D., Townes moved back east to work for Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. As America prepared for World War Two, theoretical physics had to take a back seat to application. Townes worked on radar.
After the war, Townes became a professor at Columbia University, where his experience in radar led to the idea for the MASER, which stands for "Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation," a device that transformed microwaves into an intense, coherent stream.
There were skeptics, such as Niels Bohr, but according to Einstein (and Townes) the maser was indeed possible.
MASER technology led to the LASER, "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation," created by manipulating the quantum state of atoms, forcing them to emit a concentrated beam of light.
In 1964, Charles Townes shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on maser and laser devices.
From 1966 until 1970, Townes was Chairman of NASA's Science Advisory Committee for the Apollo lunar landing program. And in 1967, he accepted a position at the University of California at Berkeley, to study astronomy.
Dr. Townes encourages public interest in scientific discovery and emphasizes the benefits. Engineering and science go hand in hand to improve society. Townes' protégées include Arno Penzias, proponent of the "Big Bang Theory." Townes is known for his views on the compatibility of science and religion. In 2005, the Templeton Prize for "Progress Toward Research or Discoveries about Spiritual Realities" was awarded to Charles Townes. He is the only person other than the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa to win both a Templeton Prize and a Nobel Prize.

Charles Hard Townes, a professor emeritus of physics at the University of California, Berkeley, who shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics for invention of the laser and subsequently pioneered the use of lasers in astronomy, died at the age of 99 on January 27, 2015. This video was produced on the occasion of his 99th birthday on July 28, 2014.
“Charles Townes embodies the best of Berkeley; he’s a great teacher, great researcher and great public servant,” said UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks on the occasion of a campuswide celebration of Townes’ 99th birthday last July 28. “As we celebrate this 99-year milestone and a career spanning nearly 80 years, we can only be impressed by the range of his intellectual curiosity, his persistence and his pioneering spirit.”
Until last year, Townes visited the campus daily, working either in his office in the physics department or at the Space Sciences Laboratory.
Only now nearing retirement -- he plans to shutter his physics department office this summer, but will continue to make daily visits to his office at UC Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory -- Townes' career highlights include a 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering the laser, ground-breaking astronomical research, wide-ranging admiration for his efforts to reconcile science and religion, 31 honorary degrees and 38 awards.

Munushian Lecture The late Jack Munushian was a long-time USC professor of electrical engineering and the right-hand man of Zohrab Kaprielian, a storied engineering dean and provost at USC. The late Jack Munushian was a long-time USC professor of electrical engineering and the right-hand man of Zohrab Kaprielian, a storied engineering dean and provost at USC.
Munushian was an innovative distance education pioneer who, utilizing television, began the program that eventually became the Viterbi Schools Distance Education Network. Many of his contributions are still evident in both the Viterbi School and the USC Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering today.
The Viterbi School marked the opening of its second century by establishing endowed keynote lectures in all its academic departments. Each of the school's academic departments are holding an annual keynote lecture, which is named after an individual who significantly influenced the department and the discipline at USC. The lectures are covering a broad range of engineering topics and are drawing eminent scholars to the Viterbi community

This 1963 film shows how basic physical concepts are applied to make an optical maser oscillate. The optical maser is examined as a generator of electromagnetic energy in the optical range of frequencies, having many similar qualities to standard radio and microwave oscillators. The principal types of gas and solid-state optical masers are shown in the laboratory.
Dr. C. G. B. Garrett of Bell Laboratories (and his prominent British accent) presents the material, which also includes lab demonstrations and animation. The Optical maser is a phrase that means the same as Laser - or Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A Laser is basically a Maser that works with photons in the light spectrum. There are optical and infrared masers, as profiled in the 1958 pioneering paper that introduced the concept to the world, written by Bell Labs scientists Charles H. Townes and Arthur L. Schawlow.
Dr. Garrett worked with Dr.s Townes and Schawlow, and is shown here with the latter.

There are two recent events of great significance to all UK scientists and engineers. First was the award of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics to Charles Kao, for his invention of Fibre Optic Communications, an invention that now unites the whole world. Kao's research was carried out at the Standard Telecommunications Laboratory, in Harlow, Essex. The second event is the 50th anniversary of the invention of the laser. The Nobel Prize for its conception was awarded in 1964 to Charles Townes, Nicolai Basov, and Alexander Prokhorov. Though this was not a UK invention, the UK has been a leader in many improvements of the device, and has been ingenious in its exploitation.
The Royal Academy of Engineering recognizes the importance of these discoveries, and sponsored a day of celebration, assisted by the Royal Society, University College London, the Rank Prize Funds. the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and the Institute of Physics. Charles Kao is a Fellow of both the Academy and the Society, and his PhD came from study at UCL under the supervision of Professor Harold Barlow. The Rank Prize Funds recognized early the seminal nature of Kao's research, and he won an RPF Award for Optoelectronics in 1978.
The abilities of Charles Townes were also acknowledged early in the UK, and in 1963 he was awarded the Thomas Young Medal of the Institute of Physics. He was elected an FRS in 1976, and has many close associations with UK physicists. The importance of the laser has been signalled by seven generous prizes for improvements and applications by the Rank Prize Funds.
