Day at Night: Richard Rodgers
CUNY TV is proud to re-broadcast newly digitized episodes of DAY AT NIGHT, the popular public television series hosted by the late James Day. Day was a true pioneer of public television: co-founder of KQED in San Francisco, president of WNET upon the merger of National Educational Television (NET) and television station WNDT/Channel 13, and most recently, Chairman of the CUNY TV Advisory Board. The series features fascinating interviews with notable cultural and political figures conducted in the mid 1970's.

Victory At Sea! By Richard Rodgers - High Definition Pictures & 3D!
Victory at Sea was a documentary television series about naval warfare during World War II that was originally broadcast by NBC in the USA during 1952-1953. It was condensed into a film during 1954. The music soundtrack, by Richard Rodgers and Robert Russell Bennett, was re-recorded and sold as record albums. The original TV broadcasts were as 26 half-hour segments on Sunday afternoons at 3pm (EST), starting October 26, 1952 and ending May 3, 1953. The series, which won an Emmy award during 1954 as "best public affairs program", played an important part in establishing historic documentaries as a viable television genre. The project was conceived by Henry Salomon, who, while a US Navy sailor during World War II, was a research assistant to historian Samuel Eliot Morison. Morison was then writing the 15-volume History of United States Naval Operations in World War II. During this period, Salomon learned of the large amounts of film that the warring navies had compiled. Salomon left the Navy during 1948 and eventually discussed his idea of a documentary series with one of his Harvard classmates, Robert Sarnoff, a rising executive at NBC television and the son of David Sarnoff, the chairman of RCA (then the owner of NBC). NBC approved the project during 1951, with Salomon as producer and a budget of $500000 (large for that era). His team, composed largely of newsreel veterans, searched naval archives around the world, and received complete cooperation from the US Navy, which ...

Mountain Greenery comp & pl by Richard Rodgers Original 1926 Version
This is one of Richard Rodgers' earliest hits, from "The Garrick Gaieties" and it has remained popular for the past 84 years. Lorenz Hart wrote the lyrics. Rodgers both wrote and plays the song, and it is notable for having a "patter" chorus which is typically not included in modern versions.

Richard Rodgers: Blue Moon
"Blue Moon" is a classic popular song. It was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934, and has become a standard ballad. In 1967, Eric Clapton used a portion of the song in his guitar solo from Cream's hit "Sunshine of Your Love." Bob Dylan covered the song on his Self Portrait album in 1970. In 1978, an arrangement by Jeff Funk was used in the film Grease. This has been followed by a country version from The Mavericks. More recently, it has been recorded by Rod Stewart. And now by me... :) it's an arrangement mainly by Laurindo Almeida but I have made several changes. Per-Olov Hope you like it Luna. This is for your safe return. Pelle

Paul Whiteman's Orchestra - Richard Rodgers: Slaughter On Tenth Avenue
Recorded in 1936. Found at The AHRC Research Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music (CHARM) was established on 1 April 2004, supported by a 5-year grant of just under £1m from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Slaughter on Tenth Avenue is a ballet with music by Richard Rodgers and choreography by George Balanchine. It occurs near the end of Rodgers and Hart's 1936 Broadway musical comedy On Your Toes. Slaughter is the story of a hoofer who falls in love with a dance hall girl who is then shot and killed by her jealous boyfriend. The hoofer then shoots the boyfriend. The ballet is integrated into the plot of the musical by the device of having two gangsters watching it from box seats in the theatre in which it is staged. They have orders to shoot the leading dancer (played by Ray Bolger in the original production). The dancer, who has been warned just in time, evades them by suddenly dancing at full speed even after the ballet actually ends, and finally two police officers enter and arrest the gangsters. Slaughter on Tenth Avenue was danced by Ray Bolger and Tamara Geva in the original stage production of On Your Toes, and by Eddie Albert and Vera Zorina in the film version. Paul Samuel Whiteman (1890 -- 1967) was an American bandleader and orchestral director. Paul Whiteman's Orchestra was the most popular band of the 1920s. They are also the most controversial to Jazz historians because Whiteman billed himself as "The King Of Jazz". The Paul ...

'Where or When' - Lena Horne
By Request... Another winning track from Lena's contribution to the 'Ultimate Jazz & Blues Collection'...So smooth - so moving...Awesome! Transcribed from Lena Horne with Orchestra Conducted by Lou Bring, from vocals by Lena Horne, recorded December 15, 1941. words & music by... (Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers) Lyrics... It seems we've stood and talked like this before, We looked at each other in the same way then, But I can't remember where or when. The clothes you're wearing are the clothes you wore, The smile you are smiling, you were smiling then, But I can't remember where or when. Some things that happened for the first time, Seem to be happening again, And so it seems that we have met before, And laughed before, And loved before, But who knows where or when? Some things that happened for the first time, Seem to be happening again, Hmmm, so it seems that we have met before, And laughed before, And loved before, But who knows where or when? (Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers)
