Ted Dunbar
Ted Dunbar (1937 in Port Arthur, Texas – May 29, 1998) was a jazz guitarist, composer, and educator. He published four volumes on jazz. He trained as a pharmacist at Texas Southern University, but by the 1970s only did pharmacy work part-time. He was also a trained numerologist and had studied other aspects of mysticism. He became interested in jazz at age seven and in the 1950s he joined several groups while studying pharmacy at Texas Southern University. At one point he received accolades from Ebony (magazine) and Down Beat. In the 1950s he became influenced by Wes Montgomery. In 1966 he moved to New York City and gained more experience. In 1972 he became one of the first jazz professors at Rutgers University and taught Kevin Eubanks and Peter Bernstein, as well as many others. He died in 1998 of a stroke.

"Voyage", written by the great pianist Kenny Barron is a beautiful (and difficult) song. Loving the key of F Minor like I do, I just had to take a stab at it. I take it at a decent pace of 205 bpm. The key for me during my improvisation is to have an idea of where I want to go and what I want to say. This is sometimes referred to as "intent". To quote Paul E. Rinzler in his book The Contradictions of Jazz, "Technique in jazz is defined not through a universal standard, but in terms of intent. That is, good technique is that which expresses and makes manifest an improviser's intent, as a matter of positive freedom. The stark dissonances of Thelonius Monk may sound like mistakes to jazz neophytes just like Miles Davis's unfocused tone, but those dissonances are actually the consistent result of clear intent from a great musical mind that saw creative possibilities in harmony and dissonance that no one else in jazz had before." Although I try to make clear my intent, I might sometimes have difficulty in execution. This is just part of my own musical "voice". A player can have monster chops, but IMO, if the intent does not come through in their playing, then it's all technique and no heart. Stan Getz is one of the most superior of the 20th century's great saxophonists. He strove throughout his artistic work towards a perfection in simplicity, which he did not think existed anywhere before. His sound is the epitome of cool, and everything he has done is characterized by complete control over - and consistent with - the instrument. 3 months before his death in 1991 he delivered one of his greatest performances ever at the Jazz Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen. It was the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6 March 1991, the Copenhagen Getz recorded his swansong with pianist Kenny Barron. I was there! A fantastic music experience, which I remember with joy and great sadness!

Biography
His talent first came to wider recognition when he took the piano chair in the 1960s Dizzy Gillespie quartet. He graduated in 1978 with a BA in Arts from Empire State College (Metropolitan Center, NYC).He also co-led the groups Sphere and the Classical Jazz Quartet.
Between 1987 and 1991, Barron recorded several albums with Stan Getz, most notably Bossas & Ballads – The Lost Sessions, Serenity, Anniversary and People Time, a 2CD set.
He has been nominated nine times for Grammy Awards and for the American Jazz Hall of Fame. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009.
For over 25 years, Barron taught piano and keyboard harmony at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He now teaches at the Juilliard School of Music. His piano students have included Noah Baerman, Earl MacDonald, Harry Pickens, and Aaron Parks.
